NEW YORK (AP) -- St. Patrick's Day festivities were in full swing Sunday with the usual merriment of bagpipes and beer, but political tensions lingered in the northeastern U.S., where city leaders will be conspicuously absent from parades over gay rights issues.
New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio will become the first mayor in decades to sit out the traditional march Monday because parade organizers refuse to let participants carry pro-gay signs. Boston Mayor Martin Walsh wasn't marching in his city's parade Sunday, either, after talks broke down that would have allowed a gay group to march.
Still, thousands of green-clad spectators came out for the parade in Boston to watch bagpipers, and organizers of a float intended to promote diversity threw Mardi Gras-type beads at onlookers. A similar scene played out in downtown Philadelphia.
In Georgia, the dome of Savannah's City Hall will be lit green, and several thousand people braved temperatures in the teens on Sunday to march with pipe and drum bands in Detroit and Bay City, Mich.

A down and dirty effort to bring politics into a day of festive parades and other events.
Homosexuality has nothing to do with honoring a great saint of Christ marching up 5th avenue to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Those gay should have been told to .....
Why do they have to shove their lifestyle and “cause” down everyone’s throats, especially on a day like St. Pat.’s? This holiday has nothing to do with recognizing gays.
Hope the voters take note, although in NYC, DeBlasio not marching in the parade probably scores him a lot of political cred with NYC voters.
My goodness, I am so sick of single-issue thinking (the world revolves around my gender, skin color, sexual preference).
Fer cripes sake, read a book, get some perspective or just Get a Life!
What not make the last Saturday of June the official day for gays? After all it’s already the National Cornhole Day.
Good for the parade organizers! Stand up to this nonsense!
“What not make the last Saturday of June the official day for gays?”
Because they already have the whole month.
June is “gay pride” month.
Here is a suggestion. Let them bring their gay signs. Straight people can bring straight signs. Then the gays will complain as they usualy do when people expose their drama.
So in the name of cooperation there will be no signs.
Last I heard there were lots of Irish in Boston, I would recall the Mayor and get one with some common sense.
In New York Deblasio is a one term Mayor, but probably not enough Irish percentage of the population to kick him out.
Although after the botched performance cleaning snow and closing Charter Schools maybe he is vulnerable to a recall.
I'd say St Patrick's day has pretty much nothing to do with Christianity...It's all about booze and festivities and is promoted where there is a profit to be made...
Would it surprise that there is a real St. Patrick and he served His Master well:

Well sure there was...But I don't know of any Christians who celebrate his ministry by wearing green and getting drunk on green beer...
I was just reading that a ritual is to throw the first punch at a St Pat’s parade...This was done by the mayor of Boston...
Another ritual is to go around urinating on things...I read of people urinating on police cars...The mayor of NY I believe said he urinated underneath a subway car...
How they connect these things with St Patrick is beyond me...
