A favorite quote of mine comes from George Bernard Shaw: God created man in his image and then man returned the favor. We might say the same about how many people try to make the church into the image of the present culture or serve the present political agenda. The left wants the church to be left and the right right.
If the church was merely a human institution this would be understandable but as a both human and divine institution, it stands in the culture to convert souls to the Gospel. Just like the Christian is not of the world but in the world, the church presents a Gospel that challenges those of all political views with the desire that all be saved. The church is for the salvation of the world.
I experienced the broadness of the church as a young priest while serving in Palmer, Alaska. One Sunday we blessed animals on the feast of Saint Francis and as an added note I decided to bless the hospital across the street because I had heard a local doctor was performing abortions there.
A few of my liberal friends were livid and some, as they say in Facebook, unfriended me. The next Sunday began the first war in Iraq a conflict that Pope John Paul II had said was unjust. I preached against the war. Some of my conservative friends were livid, said I was un-American, and a few of them also unfriended me.

Sorry, but the faith definitely is a conservative belief. Take every issue down the line, liberals are on the satanic side.
Umm, the right is largely defined by it’s belief in Christianity or at least Christian values. Though leftists often lie becuase their beliefs are repulsive, when they are honest they are explicitly anti-Christian. The fact that a priest managed to piss off both sides of the isle doesn’t change these facts.
The Church has been quite socially Conservative throughout it’s history.
I have issues with the Social Justice doctrine.
Yes, give to Caesar what is Caesar’s but I never read anywhere that says:
VOTE for Caesar so Caesar can plunder from person A, give to person B in or to scratch the Economic Justice itch of Person C.
Liberal churches invariably preach a form of socialism, which replaces God with the state. Obama’s (former) church of 20 years claimed that Jesus was a poor black man who was oppressed by rich white Jews. Liberation Theology is in fact a communist redefinition of Christianity. One reason why socialism is not supported by the bible is the 10th commandment: thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods. What God has given to someone is theirs to keep, not the state’s to redistribute.
“The Church has been quite socially Conservative throughout its history”
True. But no one owns the church, not the left or the right, if there designations even exist anymore. Fox News is almost exclusively for homosexual “marriage”, but most for some reason think Fox represents the views of conservatives.
Agreed. If it isn't (as some claim), why then are these people posting on Free Republic?
There was an old cartoon in the New Yorker, supposedly of grand doorways at the Vatican. Two monsignors are watching a devil march through them, bearing a few books. One monsignor comments to the other:
“Personally I think this ecumenism has gone too far.”
Evil, in all its manifestations, should never be addressed as a “responsible opposing viewpoint” to good.
Well, it would be more correct to say that Jesus would not be a Republican. The Word does, however, soundly condemn about 80% or the Democratic agenda. Always erring on the side of right where freedoms allow, that leaves lefty religionists out of the picture entirely. That said, every believer better be practicing their faith in concrete actions of their own rather than relying on gub’mint largesse to take up the slack of mercy and compassion.
No difference between liberal churches and Jim Jones
“THE church”? It’s “A church”.
But the Right is for the Church. Can the Left make that claim?
Not to mention that in the United States, the people are Caesar, our government is subordinate.
We human-type persons seem to like symmetry. We want a sensible center, with people becoming less sensible and increasingly extreme the further away from this center that they get, until you reach equally repulsive moonbat extremists on both sides.
In real life this symmetry does not exist. In fact, it would be much more accurate to represent the political spectrum as a continuum stretching from God on the right to Satan on the left.
If this priest is angering both the left and the right, that only means that he is himself too far to the left.
“Evil, in all its manifestations, should never be addressed as a responsible opposing viewpoint to good.”
Succinct. Well said. Me steal.
The gist of this is that repentant sinners may be found in all walks of life and all political persuasions, but they are not the same people when incorporated into the body of Christ. As a result their speech and actions will get them into hot water politically with those who think this life and world is all there is.
To follow One Who teaches "love your enemies" is radical to the core.
“To follow One Who teaches “love your enemies” is radical to the core.”
Maybe at one time. Now it’s no more radical than tolerance for sodomites.
Conservatism grew out of Christianity; leftism must eventually lead to a break with Christianity, or stall at the stage of holding contradictory beliefs.
You were corrected on this..."a Church."
YOU got it right. It is THE Church, founded by Jesus.
