Campbell Co. girl asked to stop attending school because of her "boyish" looks. In a letter sent to Sunnie's grandmother and legal guardian Mrs. Thompson, the following was written:
"We believe that unless Sunnie and her family clearly understand that God has made her female and her dress and behavior need to follow suit with her God-ordained identity, that TCS is not the best place for her future education."

"To claim that we are condoning sexual immorality in our home is nonsense," Thompson said. "We are Christians. We understand the Bible. Sunnie knows it very well. She has accepted Christ."
Thompson says Kahle is simply a tomboy, and that she's too young to understand sexual orientation or gender issues.
Thompson has raised Kahle since she was an infant. When she turned five, Thompson said she asked for a short hair cut.
“She had hair down to her waist and she wanted to give it to a child with cancer,” said Thompson. “After we cut her hair she started wanting to wear jeans and a t-shirt. She didn’t want to wear her frilly dresses anymore.”
Her appearance started leading to awkward questions at school.
Kahle said her classmates would occasionally ask if she was a boy or a girl, but she said the question did not hurt her feelings.
The issue caught the attention of administrators at Timberlake Christian School, where Kahle was a student.
Elementary principal Becky Bowman sent home a letter last month, reminding Thompson of the school’s religious affiliation and it’s right to refuse students who contradict a “biblical lifestyle.”
I was SUCH a tomboy until middle school it was insane. Then I started to become attracted to boys in a way other than wanting to play football with them. They were actually rather cute! This poor young girl is being treated poorly by the “Christian” leadership of that school. Shame on them.
Christian school. Their rules. If they don’t like it, they need to go somewhere else.
They, TCS, are right!
I think the grandmother is right and the school is being ridiculous, but they have the right to do that and the grandmother should just put the child in a different school. I doubt that the little girl would be very happy continuing in such a flaky school environment anyway.
Yes, private school, should get to make its own rules.
But I’m curious as to what rule was broken. Girls shall have a haircut that is at least three inches long? Shall not wear slacks? Get dirty in mud puddles?
I think there is more to this than the school is allowed do publicly discuss.
Read the letter in my previous post. It tells a little more than excerpts we’ve been fed.
See the letter at post 7
So now everyone is super-sensitive about "gender assignment" (stupid bastards can't even speak correctly).
Just let kids be kids and teach them to accept themselves as they are.
Of course, saying Jesus in a public school is now a crime and the Christian is subject to discipline.
I guess being a tomboy is against the rules of Timberlake Christian School. The school’s board must be run by idiots.
I wonder if we could use that against the supreme court..?
The school has the right to enforce a dress code and to insist that girls dress like girls and boys dress like boys. If that offends you then don’t send your children there.
Would you say the same thing if there was a boy who insisted on wearing frilly dresses?
This is only news because there is an attack on Christians going on in this country and throughout the world.
Shame on you for siding with the homo agenda.
Problem with “their rules” is they blatantly accused the girl of having problems with sexual orientation and she’s like not even 10 yet!! That’s way, over the top.
Wow Republic of Maine. Didn’t realize being a TOMBOY was a sin. Do tell...where in the Bible does it tell us that?
Thanks for that link. The headline of this article is deliberately deceptive but sufficient for simple minds with anti-Christian sentiments. The letter that appears at the link indicates a far more complex and serious issue than that of acting like a tomboy. It should be obvious this concerns more than her dress and hair length. It appears the school is trying to be as discrete as possible but malevolent people are not going to let it lie.
It is a private school and any Bible believing Christian would understand that at some point, tolerance of inappropriate behavior must end. The girl has been enrolled in a public school, which I’m sure will indulge any behavioral abnormalities her parents and grandparents find acceptable.
Not siding at all with the “homo agenda”. She’s simply a tomboy. I was and grew out of it when I hit puberty. I’m a preacher’s kid myself and totally side with the Christian agenda, but this school has gone too far with what they are accusing the girl AND her grandparents of.
The responses supporting the school in this manner make me want to hurl. She’s an eight year old girl for pete’s sake.
Read the letter at Post 7. Much more to this and it has been going on.
Christian school. Their rules. If they don’t like it, they need to go somewhere else
Ambiguous rule being applied in a silly context.
So the girl has short hair. How is that non biblical? I had a niece that attended a Christian school. She was very much the tomboy until her teens. No problems or issues with it.
So if some boy decided to go to this Christian School dressed in frilly dresses and acting like a girl, that you'd support him and call shame upon any school that told him that he couldn't go there anymore unless he dressed and acted like a boy?
Im a preachers kid myself and totally side with the Christian agenda,
Your words don't exactly line up with your claim. This Church has an agenda to promote normal sexual identity and this child and her grandparents refused to cooperate and insisted that she be allowed to flaunt their rules. If the grandparents had insisted that their boy be allowed to go to school dressed as a girl everyday, would you accuse the school of "going too far"? Will you please answer that question?
Gender identity is a big issue right now and this story is being used to try to convince the public that every child has a god given right to choose what sex they want to be. In California public schools children are now allowed to pick and choose which bathroom they want to use based on their subjective idea that they identify with a sex to which they were not born.
As Christians we have an obligation to push back against this. Instead people who call themselves Christian are on the other side pushing this agenda forward in the name of tolerance.
Well the left and the homos have no tolerance for Christians. And the more Christians they can get on board with their agenda, the more likely it is that they will win their culture war and Christians who take moral stands will be alienated and eventually they will either have to submit or be sued or jailed.
I commend the school for standing on principle. Even if you don't agree with their principle, you need to support their right to take a moral stand.
My youngest daughter, who looked anything but like a boy, always said when she was young that she wanted to be a boy.
I made no issue about it and she hit puberty and changed her mind. She was a tomboy for a while, dressed like a boy, but the feminine side kicked in and now she’s all girl.
And VERY interested in boys.
I still pity the boy who tried to get fresh with her. She already put one boy on the ground when she was in junior high with one well aimed blow for trying something. He left her alone after that. :)
Would you feel the same way if the child were a boy and the grandparents insisted that he be allowed to go to school every day dressed in frilly dresses?
Ellie May Clampett turned out just fine, mighty fine, and she just hated to put a dress on. She could whip Jethro’s ass.
Exactly. In a public statement, the school said as much. But that is being conveniently ignored so that some can join in the chorus of outrage.
What exactly do girls dress like?
A dress code this vague is purely subjective. If the school states that all girls shall wear dresses or skirts of a certain style, and this girl repeatedly violates that by wearing pants, then I would side with you. But to say that “girls should dress like girls and boys should dress like boys” is not a rule with any boundaries and consequently lacks any weight.
The grandma’s remark in the video about loving her if she turned out to be “homosexual or transgender” is troublesome. Grandma didn’t have to say that. What does the average grandma know about “transgender”. Just sounded like an odd statement to make.
Aha, there it is. This school is in my town, and I saw the local news report, so I didn't go to the link, assuming it would be the same one I saw. It isn't. In the initial interview, the grandmother didn't go there.
That statement probably sums up the problem.
NOW I go to Weight Watchers because I DIDN'T stay as active as MOST tomboys.
I agree with you. I clicked on the link to see how old the girl is, as I was sure she was a teen based on the school’s reaction. But she is only 8!
The school is overreacting, but, as you said, they have the right to make up their own rules.
THAT is the understatement of the day.
Amen to that.
If she were in a Catholic school, she would probably be wearing a uniform--SKIRT for girls. NO, not for boys, even if they wanted it!!
I think there is more to this than the school is allowed do publicly discuss.
Perhaps. And it sounds like the grandparents are wanting to get a lot of publicity out of this. They have withdrawn the child from this school, yet they are getting the news involved. One wonders why.
Wow! That statement by the grandmother about “homosexual or transgender is very telling. I am wondering if this is some sort of deliberate set-up in which the grandmother has been sent by some leftist group to pull this stunt.
Perhaps some FReeper will look into the connections.
OK, so I was completely on the side of the grandparents until this line:
“She said the only disciplinary issue that Kahle might have caused was that she wanted to wear boy’s pants as part of her school uniform.”
So it’s not just that she’s a tomboy. It’s that her g.parents are encouraging her to press the issue to the point that it violates school rules. The child *is* to young to understand all this crap. If she doesn’t want to wear a skirt, the g.parents should’ve told her that this is the uniform - period - and never allowed the issue to get to the school.
I’m sure there is more to this story.
Okay, now that I have learned a little more about this case, I am revising my opinion. Not sure now if the school is overreacting.
Just where in the heck is Campbell County? It would help if you let us know with the headline.
Also, IMO it’s suspect that the grandparents’ first impulse was to run to the media and characterize the whole thing as a “personal attack” against her granddaughter.
It's in central Virginia (I'm sitting in it).
No.... schools don’t want to discuss anything that reflects badly on themselves..... and then they HIDE behind privacy laws.
This private school is not hiding behind anything. They are legally obligated to speak only of certain things regarding minors.
As I’ve mentioned many times here on FR, I’m a Christian and former lesbian. And when I was young, I was also a tomboy who pretended to be male. It distresses me to no end to see very young children, as young as nursery school, encouraged by their families to work towards becoming the opposite sex. This grandmother can’t be unaware that this is the world we live in today. (And as an aside, something clicked when reading about the Justina Pelletier case today — they are one of the “leading” hospitals on basically sex changes for children, which I doubt is all coincidence). The link to the actual letter in post 7 is now disabled, but what says the most to me right now, like at least one other poster said, is the family’s decision to go the media.
Time magazine quotes the grandmother saying, after the remark on them being Christian, “If my (grandchild) grows up to be homosexual or transgendered, I will love her that much more.” They deleted something in between in her remarks, so the context isn’t clear, but altogether it seems at this point that this family wants transgenderism accepted by the church. At another site a school administrator insisted that it wasn’t just Sunnie being a tomboy, but her presence was a classroom disruption. I believe it’s very likely that the family was doing a little promoting of transgenderism, despite what they say. The antichrist spirit does not have integrity.
Praise God for your deliverance. Blessings to you.
How can that be?
The First Amendment states that the government cannot prohibit the practice of religion. (or prohibiting the free exercise thereof)
Can someone there not read English?
You need to find yourself a preacher.
I’d say that this problem is being exacerbated by the grandmother. The girl would probably do well dressing and acting like a girl if gramma would step aside.
