The midrashiest midrash that ever was midrashed [a spoiler-free “Noah” review]

Does the movie resemble the actual Noah story enough to establish credible points of contact? No, it does not.

The director himself has acknowledged that his rendering of Noah is like a midrash—an ancient method of interpreting scripture involving ahistorical embellishments. As far as midrash is concerned, Noah is the midrashiest midrash that ever was midrashed.

Aronofsky’s Noah is nothing like the biblical Noah, the only righteous man on the planet. More seriously, Aronofsky’s god is nothing like the biblical God, a long-suffering sovereign who graciously condescends to reveal Himself and His plans to Noah and to save Noah and his family.

By the end of the movie, the righteous Creator turns into a celestial Erasmus—a humanist with a high regard for human nature and agency. The Sovereign Judge and covenant Redeemer of Genesis has no place in Aronofsky’s midrash. Grade: F-

The atheist director of this movie is quoted as saying this movie is the least biblical 'biblical film' ever made!

He should know!

I just realized a new movie genre has been created and I didn’t even notice. It’s the “Fiction based on real people” Genre. There have been three that I know of:

1. The Last Temptation of Christ
2. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
3. Noah

Are there any others I haven’t thought of?

The highbrows call it “verisimilitude” - not the genre but an instance of it. It’s nothing new.

You could probably add “Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer” to that list. Just a thought...

Really hope they spent millions on this disaster of a film and gained zip in receipts.

I had a midrash once. A little Gold Bond powder cleared it right up.

Heh, my memory is foggy on that film. “Slayer” sounds far better than “hunter,” what pansy focus group thought that name up?

Yeah. I actually originally typed slayer, but thought I should check so I googled “lincoln vampire” to get the title. :-)

I think about $45 Million so far on a movie that cost $125+ Million. I hope it dies very quickly after this weekend.

I read some speculation that it will. Highly regarded "Captain America" is in theaters next weekend.

Well $125 million spent on a supposed epic film is cheap. Realizing $45 million so far is nothing. As soon as people find out what a bomb it it, that will fall way short of breaking even. Hopefully.

F minus?! LMAO! The Tabasco Sauce I had just put on my pizza almost came out of my nose. It actually went down the wrong pipe.

That sounds like a grade I would have received for College Algebra! I kid you not!
