Israeli Institute Prepares Priests for Jerusalem's Third Temple

An aerial view of the Old City of Jerusalem. An organization of Israeli temples is preparing priests for the the reconstruction of the city's historic third temple.

On April 10, at 5 p.m., hundreds of Jews will gather at the Maimonides rabbinical institution plaza in the Kiryat Moshe neighborhood in Jerusalem and start learning the Jewish laws of Passover. Rabbis and experts, including Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, the head of the Temple Institute in the Old City of Jerusalem, the leading body preparing for the establishment of the third temple, will teach the audience the laws of the Passover sacrifice. Alongside Ariel, the ritual slaughterer (shohet) Rabbi Yehudah Giatt will teach the audience about the unique elements of the slaughter of the Passover sacrifice. After the lessons, the real thing will start: the simulation of the Passover sacrifice.

The timing of the gathering isn’t coincidental: This was the date on which the people of Israel were commanded to take a lamb and sacrifice it, before the exodus from Egypt. The ceremony on Thursday will be, in Israel Defense Forces (IDF) lingo, “practice with live fire.” Slaughtering lambs, sprinkling their blood on the altar by priests dressed in kosher priestly garments and roasting the lambs, with their heads, legs and innards. Just as God intended.

This isn’t the first time that the "Association of Temple Organizations" will hold this activity, but this year the practice drill and re-enactment of the Passover sacrifice will be carried out by the students of the school for priests, Nezer Ha-kodesh, which started operating this year. The priest school intends to train the hundreds of priests that would be needed to work at the third temple; many Jews endeavor for its establishment in Israel today.

Ten students, who got to the priests school by word of mouth, paid 1,000 shekels (some $290), a relatively small sum, for twice-weekly lessons, three hours each, that teach “how to be priests.” The director of the school, Rabbi Yehoshua Friedman, hopes that the school will be more properly publicized next year and that more students will arrive. “The rabbis say that the minimum necessary is 13 priests in the temple to carry out the mandatory sacrifices. If you’re talking about a fully operating temple, where people bring their own sacrifices, it’s a place where hundreds of priests work daily,” he says. “In the days of old, a father and grandfather would teach the grandson and son how to be a priest, the commandments and laws. Today, they have to take a course. The prayer to establish the temple has no meaning if we don’t actually prepare for it. Think what would happen if tomorrow you got a functioning temple and don’t have priests.”

There are a great many laws for the temple, some of which have been forgotten and faded over the years: how to use incense, how to light the holy menorah, how to sanctify hands and feet, and of course, how to sacrifice. “The priests themselves come with requests to learn one topic or another. We are also learning as we go how the course should look. The students are very practical and focused,” explains Friedman.

At the Temple Institute, researchers are working hard to relearn the laws as well as study the architecture, location and necessary tools. “One of the unique elements of the course,” says Friedman, “is the actual practice. In my course, they learned how to sacrifice birds, so we brought stuffed doves, so that the priests would learn how to hold them, how to execute the specific moves. We work on standing in front of the altar to demonstrate the action, so that it’ll become natural to them.”

For the temple people, the priests’ course is an advanced stage that follows the completion of quite a few steps. First of all is the level of consciousness. For many years, say those working to establish the third temple, religious Zionism and the State of Israel worked to focus Jewish longing on the Western Wall.

Are these kids Levites?

Mama called and Papa sent ?

I can't see anything good coming from this except it fills a newspaper column.

Is there not a chain of hereditary succession which has been broken?

First thing they will have to do is move the al Aqsa mosque. I do not believe that will go well...

Apparently, that is less important than getting the Temple up and running. Hey, what do you expect for 1,000 shekels?!

A kohen is a kohen, a levi is a levi. No doubt the patronage of all students is confirmed.

My end game on that involves an overly-confident Muslim attack on the ChiComs, followed by the nuking of Mecca and the destruction of that mosque with conventionally armed cruise missiles. Clearing the site for the Temple.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Thursday was 10 Nisan, the date when the lambs were chosen, but 4 days before the date they were sacrificed on the evening of 14 Nisan.

The sacrifice of animals is causing all sorts of screaming arguments between the Orthodox and the more PETA-worshiping Jews. I knew one Orthodox who just loved a good argument, and even he said that was one argument he wanted to avoid, because it often got out of control.

Perhaps if there is anything to this “blood moon business” it would signify the beginning training of the priests and then the laying of the corner stone of the third temple.

Tradition says it would be rebuilt on the Mosque site in Jerusalem....but there is no strict biblical command or stipulation that it be built there or that tradition be strictly followed. The Bible doesn’t even say specifically where it would be built exactly, just that it would be built.
In 2003, one Orthodox priest in training laid a “corner stone’ at the edge of the Mosque site, basically saying that there is no reason why it couldn’t be built nearby the mosque site or in its vicinity....caused a kerfuffle but the point was made.

In short...the mosque on the temple mount, need not vanish for there to be a third temple built...only God’s allowance for the timing.

If there were EVER to be a cause for war THAT would be it.

It's Islam's third holiest site. The Muslims aren't poor and helpless anymore.

The Bedu were some of God's POOREST people on the planet for millenia but now, with all the petroleum and natural gas (200 more years) on the planet (figuratively) AND with the West as their biggest buyer, the middle east Muslims are rich as Croesus.
THUS, the West pays attention to them.

Ironic isn't He?

You probably missed this thread which was posted earlier this year.

This warning goes out not only to fellow Catholics, but most especially to any Evangelical who is willing to listen. 2014 (and 2015 for that matter) is going to be a very strange year for Western Christianity, especially in the United States. Evangelical Christians are really deep into Biblical prophecy, namely because they are eagerly awaiting the Biblical end times and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. FULL TEXT

I suppose an Israeli could have English as bad as portrayed here, but even the terms used indicate no knowledge of traditional Jewish practice.

I happen to know R. Yehoshua Friedman. Something about this story just doesn’t sound like him. Here’s a you tube of R. Friedman talking about non-Jews:

I have grave doubts about this blood moon business per se since I can’t really find any scripture supporting it. The folks into it twist Acts 2:19 thru 22 into pretzels as well as show horning certain historic events into ‘proofs’ that were shadowed by these lunar eclipse tetrads.

That the bible has foretold that there would be signs in the heavens that would foreshadow that ‘great and terrible day’ of the Lord cannot be doubted. A time is coming that the sun would be darkened and the blood would appear red. A time is coming that the sun will lose a 6th part of its light(or our days and nights would decrease in total hours from 24 hours to 18 to 20 hours ; if it is literally true that our days would literally lose a 6th part of the day light which means a 6th part of the night is lost as well. It also said of this time that our moon would “refuse to show its light”; perhaps by being destroyed or knocked into an orbit not viewable.(caused by all the calamities of the great tribulation).

Yet Hagee and supporters have tried to use these Biblical passages in support of their Lunar eclipse tetrad as being significant and there is no support for such.

Now I do see great significance in the Rabinnical orthodox groups pushing ahead with their preparations for a newly rebuilt temple and their training for the resumption of sacrifices. I don’t really think of the lunar eclipse tetrads as being an important sign of things to come.

I do see this development concerning the training of the priests as a more potent sign of the coming of Jesus Christ. Christ was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, the only one that makes us acceptable to the Father. For certain of the Hebrews to push for the resumption of these ‘blood sacrifices’ shows that even now, do they continue to reject their one true messiah and this will lead ultimately to Satan throwing his final gauntlet down in the abomination of desolation that his “beast”’ling will cause to happen in this rebuilt temple.

There is a long traditional Jewish history of making preparations for a rebuilt Temple.

The famous saintly Jewish Sage know as the Chofetz Chaim would run stairs even into old age. He explained that, as a Kohen, he wanted to be ready for Temple service.
