CDF head: Pope Francis has close ties with liberation theology

Pope Francis has close ties with liberation theology, the prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the body that once condemned the movement, has said. In a lengthy interview in the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller said Pope Francis “is not so much a liberation theologian in the academic sense, but as far as pastoral work is concerned, he has close ties with liberation theology’s concerns. What we can learn from him is the insight that there is no pastoral work without profound theology and vice versa”. In the 1980s the CDF under then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger attacked liberation theology as borrowing “from various currents of Marxist thought“. But a visit to Peru in 1988, when the then Archbishop Müller met Fr Gustavo Gutiérrez OP, regarded as the father of the movement, convinced the him of its orthodoxy. “Liberation theology wants to make God’s liberating actions visible in the Church’s religious and social practice ... It would stop being genuine theology if it were to confuse the Christian message with Marxist or other social analysis,” he explained.

He is said to have been opposed to Liberation Theology while he was a bishop in South America.

More deliberate troublemaking? When he was named Pope, I was hoping that he’d broom the troublemakers out of the Vatican, which Pope Benedict seemed unable to do, but I haven’t seen many signs of that.

Liberation theology is why I left the Catholic Church. The folks involved supported marxists all over the place.

FOUNDER OF LIBERATION THEOLOGY HAILED AT VATICAN

“The founder of liberation theology, the Latin American-inspired Catholic theology advocating for the poor, received a hero’s welcome Tuesday at the Vatican as the once-criticized movement continues its rehabilitation under Pope Francis.

The Rev. Gustavo Gutierrez of Peru was the surprise speaker Tuesday at a book launch featuring the head of the Vatican’s orthodoxy office, Cardinal Gerhard Mueller; one of Francis’ top advisers, Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga; and the Vatican spokesman.

The former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger spent much of his tenure at Mueller’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith battling liberation theology and disciplining some of its most famous defenders, arguing that they had misinterpreted Jesus’ preference for the poor into a Marxist call for armed rebellion.”

Pope Francis wrote the preface for Mueller’s book.

As a Catholic, I have a very queasy feeling about this Pope whom the media has worked very hard to make “popular”. Riding around in a Fiat and living in a hotel room does nothing for me. We just had two former Popes canonized, and they both lived in the papal apartment and rode around in a Mercedes.

Jesus said the poor will always be with us. Working to help the poor is one thing but acting like the poor are the most important thing in the world and should be the No. 1 priority is extreme.

Notice from the Vatican Translation Team Concerning so-called "Liberation Theology"

It has come to our attention that we are being made the scapegoats of everything the Pope says, as if we are not doing our jobs. This is inaccurate. We are not charged with perfection in translation.

This may surprise many readers of this notice, but none of us in the VTT speak a second language at all!

I will describe our role here at Ground Zero...Vatican City or VC, as we call it.

First, just months ago, we were all homeless on the Streets of Rome. The translation office is a jobs program for homeless Italians. Through the kindness of the Great leaders at VC, 8 of us were recruited to a very fulfilling job with benefits. Many of us previously used Google Translate, so we had every qualification needed. Please note, our instructions are to get the message out fast. You may have noticed our Great Pope speaks "off the cuff" quite frequently, or as we say here in VC, "between bites of pasta." We assure you it is not easy to keep up and be at dinner on time!

For this reason, we are not charged with accuracy, but with speed. Blinding speed. And between you and me, we are darned fast. We don't like to miss meals. Done is done. Good enough, is good enough. Out the door and the door closed and locked in under 10 seconds! We're that good!

In this case, the GAP (Great and Amazing Pontif) said nothing about "liberation theology." He said "procreation ornithology." This of course, is the hobby of our GAP. I believe it called "bird watching" in America. Of course, he is a pro-life bird watcher.

We blame The Evil Google for this mistranslation! Anathema to you Google!
We blame the Evil Main Street Media for their bias in reporting this! Anathema upon you Evil Media!

We hope this clears up any misunderstanding of the GAP's actual message and get's us off the hook, so we can continue in this important role.

Sincerely,
Luigi, Antonio, Giuseppe, Michael, Maria, Giovanna, Francesco, & Concetta

I studied Catholicism at 12 ‘cause my mom wanted to sing in their choir. Text was “Father Smith Instructs Jackson”.

Never converted, but it’s a pretty good book which I still have, and look to from time to time.

IMHO, the Pope cannot espouse his ‘communal sharing’ philosophy without encouraging covetousness, which is proscribed by the Tenth Commandment. Covetousness leads in an almost natural way to “bearing false witness” (No 9) and even to inducements to “steal” violating number 8.

This Vicar of Christ needs to get his act together.

I disagree. I think self-centeredness is the default setting for human beings; my experimental population is ten children in a modest suburban home. As soon as they reach the age of reason, they start to reason that, if only their siblings didn't exist, each one could be the center of his universe and have all the stuff and attention. "Can we take Tom back to the hospital now? I've decided I don't want a brother."

It is our natural instinct to see others as, first and ultimately, competitors or rivals. "Tom, we need you to get out of the bathroom now so that Frank can go." "That's your fault for having so many children."

Pope Francis is telling us, as did St. Paul, that the mindset of, "Mine is mine, freep you," is not the mind of Christ. We can always justify not loving, not sharing, not sacrificing for others. However, that is not what Jesus did.

My understanding is that the subtext of liberation theology is that that people who espouse it —take the low view of Christ. That is, that Jesus is just a man and not as well fully God.

That would come in contravention of the Nicean Creed.

Is that correct?

(This is the same heresy that is practiced unofficially in the liberal protestant churches that fell over dead in Europe and are currently dying in the USA. Its done soto voce.)

Recent actions by Pope Francis: the violent, unwarranted and still unexplained suppression of the FOTI, the rehabilitation of liberation theology and its godfather Gustavo Gutuerrez a few months ago, of the Florentine priest Lorenzo Milani two weeks ago, and of situation ethics/woman’s ordination advocate Fr. Sean Fagan earlier this week indicate he has a fast-track agenda.

And that agenda doesn’t bode well.

It's marxism with a Christian veneer. Substitute "proletariat" with "the poor", justify the "preferential option for the poor" with proof-texting and characterize the "class struggle" as a spiritual endeavor rooted in social justice. The consequence of such thinking is the psychological demotion of Christ the King, Lord and Savior to a social-worker type figure.

According to Cdl. Wuerl, we are experiencing the “continuity of change”.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/dual-canonization-represents-continuity-of-change-for-catholic-church-cardinal-donald-wuerl-says/

The Pope hates “small-minded rules” and supports liberation theology. He has been making a “mess” and the threat of more messes is looming. The ongoing confusion is fittingly summed up by an oxymoron.

It is our natural instinct to see others as, first and ultimately, competitors or rivals.

That depends on the circumstances, and is checked morally insofar as this experimental population is raised within a Judeo-Christian framework.

Some sense of self envy is natural through childhood. But ask those raised of such families if they would sacrifice a single sibling, and invariably hear the startled, "Never!"

Jesus did not strike me as a socialist. But this Pope does, for the reasons stated in #10 above.
