Reading 1 Acts 7:51-8:1a

Stephen said to the people, the elders, and the scribes:
“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears,
you always oppose the Holy Spirit;
you are just like your ancestors.
Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute?
They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one,
whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.
You received the law as transmitted by angels,
but you did not observe it.”

When they heard this, they were infuriated,
and they ground their teeth at him.
But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit,
looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God
and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
and Stephen said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened
and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
But they cried out in a loud voice,
covered their ears, and rushed upon him together.
They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him.
The witnesses laid down their cloaks
at the feet of a young man named Saul.
As they were stoning Stephen, he called out,
“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice,
“Lord, do not hold this sin against them”;
and when he said this, he fell asleep.

Now Saul was consenting to his execution.

For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven
and gives life to the world.”

So they said to Jesus,
“Sir, give us this bread always.”
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

Stephen’s Address to the Sanhedrin


(Stephen addressed the Sanhedrin,) [51] “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised
in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.
[52] Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those
who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now
betrayed and murdered, [53] you who received the law as delivered by angels and
did not keep it.”

[54] Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their
teeth against him. [55] But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into Heaven and saw
the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; [56] and he said,
“Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right
hand of God.” [57] But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and
rushed together upon him. [58] Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him;
and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named
Saul. [59] And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my
spirit.” [60] And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this
sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Persecution of the Church

Commentary:

55-56. “It is clear”, St. Ephraem comments, “that those who suffer for Christ en-
joy the glory of the whole Trinity. Stephen saw the Father and Jesus at His side,
because Jesus appears only to his own, as was the case with the Apostles after
the Resurrection. While the champion of the faith stood there helpless in the
midst of those who had killed the Lord, just at the point when the first martyr was
to be crowned, he saw the Lord, holding a crown in His right hand, as if to encou-
rage him to conquer death and to show that he inwardly helps those who are a-
bout to die on his account. He therefore reveals what he sees, that is, the hea-
vens opened, which were closed to Adam and only opened to Christ at the Jor-
dan, but open now after the Cross to all who share Christ’s sufferings, and in the
first instance open to this man. See how Stephen reveals why his face was lit
up: it was because he was on the point of contemplating this wondrous mission.
That is why he took on the appearance of an angel—so that his testimony might
be more reliable” (”Armenian Commentary, ad loc.”).

57-59. The cursory trial of Stephen ends without any formal sentence of death:
this Jewish tribunal was unable to pass such sentences because the Romans
restricted its competence. In any event no sentence proves necessary: the
crowd becomes a lynching party: it takes over and proceeds to stone Stephen,
with the tacit approval of the Sanhedrin.

Tradition regards Stephen as the first Christian martyr, an example of fortitude
and suffering for love of Christ. “Could you keep all God’s commandments,” St.
Cyprian asks, “were it not for the strength of patience? That was what enabled
Stephen to hold out: in spite of being stoned he did not call down vengeance on
his executioners, but rather forgiveness.... How fitting it was for him to be Christ’s
first martyr, so that by being, through his glorious death, the model of all the mar-
tyrs that would come after him, he should not only be a preacher of the Lord’s
Passion, but should also imitate it in his meekness and immense patience”
(”De Bono Patientiae”, 16).

Martyrdom is a supreme act of bravery and of true prudence, but to the world it
makes no sense. It is also an expression of humility, because a martyr does
not act out of bravado or overweening self-confidence; he is a weak man like any-
one else, but God’s grace gives him the strength he needs. Although martyrdom
is something which happens rarely, it does show Christians what human nature
can rise to if God gives it strength, and it establishes a standard, both real and
symbolic, for the behavior of every disciple of Christ.

“Since all the virtues and the perfection of all righteousness are born of love of
God and one’s neighbor,” St. Leo says, “in no one is this love more worthily
found than in the blessed martyrs, who are nearest to our Lord in terms of imita-
tion of both His charity and His Passion.

“The martyrs have been of great help to others, because the Lord has availed
of the very strength as He granted them to ensure that the pain of death and
the cruelty of the Cross do not frighten any of His own, but are seen as things
in which man can imitate Him....

“No example is more useful for the instruction of the people of God than that of
the martyrs. Eloquence is effective for entreating, argument for convincing; but
examples are worth more than words, and it is better to teach by deeds than by
speech” (”Hom. on the Feast of St. Laurence”).

The Second Vatican Council has reminded us of the excellence of the martyrdom
as a form of witness to the faith. Although there are heroic ways of imitating and
following our Lord which do not involve the drama of bloodshed and death, all
Christians should realize that confession of the faith in this way is not a thing of
the past and is sometimes necessary.

“Since Jesus, the Son of God, showed His love by laying down His life for us, no
one has greater love than he who lays down his life for Him and for his brothers
(cf. 1 John 3:16; John 15:13). Some Christians have been called from the begin-
ning, and will always be called, to give this greatest testimony of love to all, es-
pecially to persecutors. Martyrdom makes the disciple like his Master. [...]
Therefore, the Church considers it the highest gift and supreme test of love. And
although it is given to few, all must be prepared to confess Christ before men
and to follow him along the way of the Cross amidst the persecutions which the
Church never lacks.

“Likewise the Church’s holiness is fostered [...] by the manifold counsels which
the Lord proposes to His disciples in the Gospel” (Vatican II, “Lumen Gentium”,
42).

The Liturgy of the Church sums up the asceticism and theology of martyrdom
in the preface for Christian martyrs: “Your holy martyr followed the example of
Christ, and gave his life for the glory of Your name. His death reveals Your power
shining through our human weakness. You choose the weak and make them
strong in bearing witness to You.”

Like Jesus, Stephen dies commending his soul to God and praying for his perse-
cutors. At this point St. Luke brings in Saul who cooperates in the proceedings
by watching the executioners’ clothes; Saul will soon experience the benefits of
Stephen’s intercession. “If Stephen had not prayed to God, the Church would not
have had Paul” (St. Augustine, “Sermons”, 315, 7).

Stephen has died, but his example and teaching continue to speak across the
world.

The Discourse on the Bread of Life (Continuation)


[30] So they said to Him (Jesus), “Then what sign do You do, that we may see,
and believe You? What work do You perform? [31] Our fathers ate the manna in
the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread from Heaven to eat.’” [32] Je-
sus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you
the bread from Heaven; My Father gives you the true bread from Heaven. [33]
For the bread of God is that which comes down from Heaven, and gives life to
the world.” [34] They said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”

[35] Jesus said them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hun-
ger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”

Commentary:

28-34. This dialogue between Jesus and His hearers is reminiscent of the epi-
sode of the Samaritan woman (cf. John 4:11-15). On that occasion Jesus was
speaking about water springing up to eternal life; here, He speaks of bread co-
ming down from Heaven to give to the world. There, the woman was asking Je-
sus if He was greater than Jacob; here the people want to know if He can com-
pare with Moses (cf. Exodus 16:13). “The Lord spoke of Himself in a way that
made Him seem superior to Moses, for Moses never dared to say that he would
give food which would never perish but would endure to eternal life. Jesus promi-
ses much more than Moses. Moses promised a kingdom, and a land flowing
with milk and honey, good health and other temporal blessings [...], plenty for
the belly, but food which perishes; whereas Christ promised food which never
perishes but which endures forever” (St. Augustine, “In Ioann. Evang.”, 25:12).

These people know that the manna — food which the Jews collected every day
during the journey through the wilderness (cf. Exodus 16:13ff) — symbolized mes-
sianic blessings; which was why they asked our Lord for a dramatic sign like the
manna. But there was no way they could suspect that the manna was a figure
of a great supernatural messianic gift which Christ was bringing to mankind —
the Blessed Eucharist. In this dialogue and in the first part of the discourse (ver-
ses 35-47), the main thing Jesus is trying to do is bring them to make an act of
faith in Him, so that He can then openly reveal to them the mystery of the Bles-
sed Eucharist — that He is the bread “which comes down from Heaven, and gives
life to the world” (verse 33). Also, St. Paul explains that the manna and the other
marvels which happened in the wilderness were a clear prefiguring of Jesus
Christ (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:3-4).

The disbelieving attitude of these Jews prevented them from accepting what Je-
sus revealed. To accept the mystery of the Eucharist, faith is required, as Paul
VI stressed: “In the first place we want to remind you that the Eucharist is a very
great mystery; strictly speaking, to use the words of sacred liturgy, it is ‘the mys-
tery of faith’. This is something well known to you but it is essential to the pur-
pose of rejecting any poisonous rationalism. Many martyrs have witnessed to
it with their blood. Distinguished Fathers and Doctors of the Church in unbroken
succession have taught and professed it. [...] We must, therefore, approach this
mystery, above all, with humble reverence, not following human arguments,
which ought to be hushed, but in steadfast adherence to divine revelation”
(”Mysterium Fidei”).

35. Going to Jesus means believing in Him, for it is through faith that we ap-
proach our Lord. Jesus uses the metaphor of food and drink to show that He is
the one who really meets all man’s noblest aspirations: “How beautiful is our Ca-
tholic faith! It provides a solution for all our anxieties, calms our minds and fills
our hearts with hope” (St. J. Escriva, “The Way”, 582).

Jesus, High Priest
 

We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry.

Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf: Fill your priests with the sure knowledge of your love.

Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit.

Lead them to new depths of union with your Son.

Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us.

Lord Jesus Christ, grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holiness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will.

O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son.

Intercede for our priests, that offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Pray a Rosary each day for our nation.

Pray the Rosary

1.  Sign of the Cross:  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

2.  The Apostles Creed:  II BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

3.  The Lord's Prayer:  OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

4. (3) Hail Mary:  HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen. (Three times)

5. Glory Be:  GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Fatima Prayer: Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy.

Announce each mystery, then say 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, 1 Glory Be and 1 Fatima prayer.  Repeat the process with each mystery.

End with the Hail Holy Queen:

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve! To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears! Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus!

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Final step -- The Sign of the Cross

May Devotion: Blessed Virgin Mary
The Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Grace

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Toward the end of the eighteenth century a zealous Jesuit priest, Father Lalomia, started among the students of the Roman college of his Society the practice of dedicating May to Our Lady. The devotion, which others had promoted in a small way, soon spread to other Jesuit Colleges and to the entire Latin church and since that time it has been a regular feature of Catholic life.

INVOCATIONS

Thou who wast a virgin before thy delivery, pray for us. Hail Mary, etc.

Saint John Vianney, better known as the Cure of Ars, when asked how long he had loved Mary, said: "I loved her almost before I could know her." In this prayer he expresses that love.
O thou most holy virgin Mary, who dost evermore stand before the most holy Trinity, and to whom it is granted at all times to pray for us to thy most beloved Son; pray for me in all my necessities; help me, combat for me, and obtain for me the pardon of all my sins. "The bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world"

Christ is “the bread of life” for those who believe in him: to believe in Christ is to eat the bread of life, to possess Christ within one, to possess eternal life...

“I am the bread of life,” he says; “your fathers ate manna in the wilderness and they are dead” (Jn 6,48f). By this is to be understood spiritual death. Why are they dead? Because they believed in what they saw and did not understand what they could not see... Moses ate manna, Aaron ate it and many others, too, who pleased God and are not dead. Why are they not dead? Because they understood in a spiritual fashion, they were spiritually hungry, they tasted the manna spiritually so that they might be spiritually satisfied. “This is the bread that came down from heaven: whoever eats it will never die” (v.50).

This manna – that is to say, Christ, who himself spoke like this..., was prefigured by the manna but was able to do more than manna could. For manna could not of itself prevent dying spiritually... But the righteous saw Christ in the manna, they believed in his coming, and Christ, of whom manna was the symbol, grants to all who believe in him that they should not spiritually die. Hence he says: “This is the bread come down from heaven; whoever eats it will never see death.” Here on earth, here now, before your eyes, your eyes of flesh: here is to be found the “bread from heaven” (v.51). The “bread of life” we spoke of a moment ago is now called “living bread”. Living bread because it contains within itself the life that abides and can deliver from spiritual death and bestow life. First he said: “Whoever eats it will never die”; now he speaks clearly concerning the life he gives: “Whoever eats this bread will live for ever” (v.58).

Blessed Francois De Montmorency Laval

Feast Day: May 06
Born: 1623 :: Died: 1708

Blessed Francois was the first bishop of Quebec City, Canada.

He was the third son of Michelle de Péricard and Huges de Laval, a soldier. Francois was born at Montigny-sur-Avre, a small town in Normandy, France. His was an old, well respected and religious family, so Francois received a good, Catholic education.

He studied with the Jesuits at La Fleche from the age of eight and when he was quiet young felt God calling him to become a priest. Then he went to a Jesuit college in Paris to complete his preparation for the priesthood and Francois became a priest in May, 1647. He was consecrated a bishop on December 8, 1658, and arrived in New France in 1659.

Bishop Laval had a missionary spirit and accepted the new way o life of his people. Francois also bravely took on the difficult job of organizing the Church in Canada which was still mission territory. Bishop Laval asked the Jesuit missionaries to care for the spiritual needs of the native people.

He opened new parishes for the French-speaking Catholics. He started the seminary of Quebec in 1663. This was of great importance because a good seminary would train future priests to care for God's people, the Church. He also started the Catholic school system all over Canada

Bishop Laval loved the people of his vast territory. He was a caring and prayerful bishop and built the cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He boldly spoke to the civil authorities about the harmful affects of smuggling alcohol to the Indian tribes. Because of this he made many enemies.

In 1688, he retired and went to live as a hermit at a seminary in Quebec. He was replaced by Bishop de Saint-Vallier. Bishop Laval spent the last twenty years of his life doing works of charity to help the poor and encouraging people become more holy. He died in 1708 in Quebec, Canada and many miracles took place when people prayed at his tomb.

Old Calendar: St. John before the Latin Gate; St Evodius, disciple

According to the 1962 Missal of St. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is the feast of St. John before the Latin Gate. A tradition mentioned by St. Jerome, which goes back to the second century, says St. John the Apostle was taken to Rome under the Emperor Domitian and plunged into a cauldron of boiling oil; by a striking miracle he came out safe and sound from this torture. A church dedicated in honor of St. John was built near the Latin Gate, the spot referred to by the tradition.

Historically today is the feast St. Evodius one of the seventy-two disciples Christ, and Catholic tradition has always held that he was the first bishop of Antioch after St. Peter. As bishop of Antioch, he was the first to coin the word “Christian” to refer to the disciples of Jesus. He probably died between the years 64-67, when he was then succeeded by St. Ignatius of Antioch.

One day Salome presented her two sons, James and John, to Jesus, and with a mother’s ambition asked Him to grant them the highest places in his Kingdom. In reply, the Savior spoke of the chalice which He Himself would have to drink, and foretold that these two disciples would also drink of it. The elder, James the Great, was the first to give his Master this proof of his love. John, the younger brother, offered his life in testimony of Jesus’ divinity.

But the martyrdom of the latter Apostle called for a scene worthy of the event. Asia Minor, which his zeal had evangelized, was not a sufficiently glorious land for such a combat. Rome, whither Peter had transferred his Chair and where he died on his cross, and where Paul had bowed down his venerable head beneath the sword, alone deserved the honor of seeing the beloved disciple march on to martyrdom, with that dignity and sweetness which are the characteristics of this veteran of the Apostolic College.

In the year 95 John appeared before the tribunal of pagan Rome. He was convicted of having propagated, in a vast province of the Empire, the worship of a Jew who had been crucified under Pontius Pilate. He was considered a superstitious and rebellious old man, and it was time to rid Asia of his presence. He was, therefore, sentenced to an ignominious and cruel death.

A huge cauldron of boiling oil was prepared in front of the Latin Gate. The sentence ordered that the preacher of Christ be plunged into this bath. The hour had come for the second son of Salome to partake of his Master’s chalice. John’s heart leapt with joy. After cruelly scourging him, the executioners seized the old man, and threw him into the cauldron. But, lo! the boiling liquid lost all its heat; the Apostle felt no scalding. On the contrary, when they took him out again he felt all the vigor of his youthful years restored to him.

The praetor’s cruelty was foiled, and John, a martyr in desire, was to be left to the Church for some few years longer. An imperial decree banished him to the rugged Isle of Patmos, where God revealed to him the future of the Church even to the end of time.

St. Evodius

Very little is known of the life of St. Evodius. However, he was a pagan who converted to Christianity due to the apostolic work of Saint Peter. In the Book of Acts, one of the first communities to receive evangelism were the Jews and pagans of Antioch. The city was opulent and cosmopolitan, and there were both Hellenized Jews and pagans influenced by monotheism. The term "Christian" was coined for these Gentile (mainly Syrian and Greek) converts, and St. Peter became the bishop of Antioch and led the church there. Evodius succeeded Peter the Apostle as bishop of Antioch when Peter left Antioch for Rome.

St. Evodius was bishop of Antioch until 69 AD, and was succeeded by St. Ignatius of Antioch. It is more likely that St. Evodius died of natural causes, in office, than that he was martyred. As one of the first pagans to come to the new church, he is venerated in both the Roman Catholic Church of the east and Orthodox Churches of the East as a saint. His feast day in the Roman Catholic Church is May 6 and in the Orthodox Church it is September 7.

Meditation: John 6:30-35

3rd Week of Easter

It was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. (John 6:32)

You can imagine Jesus sighing during this dialogue. “What sign can you do?” ask the people. Have they already forgotten how he fed five thousand of them on the hillside? Instead, they hearken back to a romanticized version of their ancestors’ time in the desert, when manna appeared in response to Moses’ prayers. They conveniently forget the pain and frustration of their long wanderings and God’s frustration with their lack of trust and belief.

But Jesus seems to say, “Wake up! Come back to the present! God’s food is being offered to you right now.”

How tempting it can be to romanticize what God has done for us in the past and miss what he is doing today! We remember how God led us to the Church, how he healed someone we prayed for, how he opened the path for a new job for us, how he helped us find our husband or wife—or discern a vocation to the religious life. These are wonderful stories with happy endings. 

But what is God doing with you right now? Perhaps he is stretching your comfort zone by bringing you into contact with people who seem very different from yourself. Maybe he is pointing out a tendency to gossip or a need to be in charge. Is he inviting you to dig into a part of Scripture you’ve never understood? Callings like these are much more challenging. It’s hard to be patient with such an incomplete and unfinished work, isn’t it? We’d rather cross items off our list than return to them every day, with mixed results.

Today’s reading tells us that even though Jesus’ work on the cross is finished, it doesn’t remain in the past. Rather, he invites us to come to him today and every day. He asks us to stay with him, to feed on him, and to keep growing in our union with him. There is so much more that he wants to give us!

“Come to me,” he invites. “I am your Bread of Life.”

“Jesus, you are all I need. Open my eyes to your powerful presence in the nitty-gritty of my life today.”

AUG. To eat then that meat which endures to everlasting life, is to believe in Him. Why do you make ready your tooth and your belly? Only believe, and you have eaten already. CHRYS. Nothing can be more unreasonable than their asking for another miracle, as if none had been given already. And they do not even leave the choice of the miracle to our Lord; but would oblige Him to give them just that sign, which was given to their fathers: Our fathers did eat manna in the desert.

ALCUIN. And to exalt the miracle of the manna they quote the Psalm, As it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

CHRYS. Whereas many miracles were performed in Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the desert, they remembered this one the best of any. Such is the force of appetite. They do not mention this miracle as the work either of God, or of Moses, in order to avoid raising Him on the one hand to an equality with God, or lowering Him on the other by a comparison with Moses; but they take a middle ground, only saying, Our fathers did eat manna in the desert.

AUG. Or thus; Our Lord sets Himself above Moses, who did not dare to say that He gave the meat which perishes not. The multitude therefore remembering what Moses had done, and wishing for some greater miracle, say, as it were, you promise the meat which perishes not, and does not works equal to those Moses did. He gave us not barley loaves, but manna from heaven.

CHRYS. Our Lord might have replied, that He had done miracles greater than Moses: but it was not the time for such a declaration. One thing He desired, viz. to bring them to taste the spiritual meat: then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. Did not the manna come from heaven? True, but in what sense did it? The same in which the birds are called, the birds of heaven; and just as it is said in the Psalm, The Lord thundered out of heaven. He calls it the true bread, not because the miracle of the manna was false, but because it was the figure, not the reality. He does not say too, Moses gave it you not, but I: but He puts God for Moses, Himself for the manna.

AUG. As if He said, That manna was the type of this food, of which I just now spoke; and which all my. miracles refer to. You like my miracles, you despise what is signified by them. This bread which God gives, and which this manna represented, is the Lord Jesus Christ, as we read next, For the bread of God is He which comes down from hearer, and gives life to the world.

BEDE. Not to the physical world, but to men, its inhabitants.

THEOPHYL. He calls Himself the true bread, because the only-begotten Son of God, made man, was principally signified by the manna. For manna means literally, what is this? The Israelites were astonished at first on finding it, and asked one another what it was. And the Son of God, made man, is in an especial sense this mysterious manna, which we ask about, saying, What is this? How can the Son of God be the Son of man? How can one person consist of two natures?

ALCUIN. Who by the humanity, which was assumed, came down from heaven, and by the divinity, which assumed it, gives life to the world.

THEOPHYL. But this bread, being essentially life, (for He is the Son of the living Father,) in quickening all things, does but what is natural to Him to do. For as natural bread supports our weak flesh, so Christ, by the operations of the Spirit, gives life to the soul; and even incorruption to the body, (for at the resurrection the body will be made incorruptible.) Wherefore He says, that He gives life to the world.

CHRYS. Not only to the Jews, but to the whole world. The multitude, however, still attached a low meaning to His words: Then said they to Him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. They say, Give us this bread, not, Ask Your Father to give it us: whereas He had said that His Father gave this bread.

AUG. As the woman of Samaria, when our Lord told her, Whosoever drinks of this water shall never thirst, thought He meant natural water, and said, Sir, give me this water, that she might never be in want of it again: in the same way these say, Give us this bread, which refreshes, supports, and fails not.

35. And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger; and he that believes in me shall never thirst.

CHRYS. Our Lord now proceeds to set forth mysteries; and first speaks of His Divinity: And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He does not say this of His body, for He speaks of that at the end; The bread that I will give you is My flesh. Here He is speaking of His Divinity. The flesh is bread, by virtue of the Word; this bread is heavenly bread, on account of the Spirit which dwells in it.

THEOPHYL. He does not say, I am the bread of nourishment, but of life, for, whereas all things brought death, Christ has quickened us by Himself. But the life here, is not our common life, but that which is not cut short by death: He that comes to Me shall never hunger; and, He that believes in Me shall never thirst.

AUG. He that comes to Me, i.e. that believes in Me, shall never hunger, has the same meaning as shall never thirst; both signifying that eternal society, where there is no want.

THEOPHYL. Or, shall never hunger or thirst, i.e. shall never be wearied of hearing the word of God, and shall never thirst as to the understanding: as though He had not the water of baptism, and the sanctification of the Spirit.

Homily of the Day

The first reading is about the martyrdom of St. Stephen, the first martyr of the early Church.  Stephen boldly admonishes the Pharisees and then has a vision of God.  The Pharisees are so angry that they stone him to death. What is remarkable in this reading is that Stephen forgives his killers and then “falls asleep.” What a holy death!  What courage, tenacity and such big-hearted compassion for one’s enemies!  This is Christian witnessing at its highest! Do you have the conviction, courage and love of St. Stephen? Even one percent of it should be enough for us. How much faith do we have in Jesus? Are we willing to suffer for him? Or even to die for him? By reading this passage of the New Testament, we should be moved to love Jesus a bit more, much more than usual. We should ask God for faith, the faith that can move mountains, and love for our enemies. These virtues we are called to possess if we want to be authentic Christians. If we pray hard enough for them, God might grant them to us.

We will need to eat the bread of life in the Eucharist to gain more spiritual strength to carry our daily crosses. We will need to read and to reflect on the Scriptures every day. We should exhaust all opportunities to do good to others, especially the poor and the needy. But without a deep and serious relationship with God and his Son Jesus, our faith will falter. Therefore, we must ask for the gift of prayer. Who says a Christian’s life is easy? Obviously it is not, but it is surely worth living because it means that we are always in touch with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

TRUTH-LOVE

 
"Those who listened to his words were stung to the heart." —Acts 7:54
 

St. Stephen was an in-your-face, confrontational preacher. He called his Jewish listeners "stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears" (Acts 7:51). Stephen challenged the people by accusing them and even their fathers of always resisting the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51). He called them "betrayers and murderers" (Acts 7:52). It's no wonder that Stephen became the first martyr.

Stephen was not only confrontational but also forgiving. Like Jesus, he loved and forgave those who murdered him. He prayed: "Lord, do not hold this sin against them" (Acts 7:60).

To love like Jesus, we need to love people enough to challenge them to repentance. Yet we should never challenge them without love. Christians specialize in "tough love" — not in being tough, and not in the fake love of permissiveness, but in love based on the toughness of truth.

Do and speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15). Love even though it hurts. Be like Jesus, Who loves us so much that He confronts us in the Incarnation and the Crucifixion.

 
Prayer: Risen Jesus, You are the Truth (Jn 14:6) and You are Love (1 Jn 4:16). Give me truth-love.
Promise: "I Myself am the Bread of Life. No one who comes to Me shall ever be hungry, no one who believes in Me shall ever thirst." —Jn 6:35
Praise: Father Ron has a marvelous sense of humor, and he uses that gift openly to attract people to the love and warmth of Jesus.
