More than 4 million Latinos in the United States have left the Catholic Church since 2010, according to a new Pew Research Center survey that spotlighted the churchs ongoing exodus of Latinos, a group seen as pivotal to the future of Catholicism.
In 2010, two-thirds of Hispanics (67 percent) in the U.S. were Catholic. Today, that number has dwindled to 55 percent of the nation's 35 million Latino adults. While close to 20 million Latinos still identify as Catholic, the church has lost 12 percent, or 4 million Latinos in the U.S. over the past four years alone, according to the Pew study released Wednesday.
At the same time, the share of Hispanic evangelicals rose from 12 percent to 16 percent, while Latinos with no religious affiliation increased from 10 percent to 18 percent.
The new survey confirms a concerning worldwide trend for the Catholic Church, which has been losing followers for years, and is the latest indication the church is particularly losing followers among its strongest base, Latinos in the U.S. and in Latin America....

I know multiple Mexican families that have gone from the Catholic Church to Protestant churches, and they are all conservatives. They vote conservative.
Its possible that Protestant Hispanics will move further right, but I don't think its likely that they'll ever become a reliable conservative voting block, especially considering that the trend among Hispanics in general is a steady shift left.
So that wasn’t the actual 2012 vote, I didn’t think so.
Hispanics who become Protestant vote closer to traditional Protestant voting, and are about a 50/50 vote, and on average, have beat the overall Catholic vote for the elections that we have their numbers, that isn’t a ringing endorsement of help on the way, but it does show that America can Americanize Hispanics and possibly win them over as a republican voting block, or at least partly neutralize the Catholic gains for the left.
“The Catholic church has not been “ losing many followers world wide”. Only in the Western nations where we are losing touch with God. Overall, the Catholic church has made gains. “
This doesn’t sound like much of a distinction.
At the end of the day, the fact remains that the Roman church has a hole in the bottom of its bucket.
Tens of millions have left. Millions in Brazil. As this article confirms, great numbers of hispanics. Some to other churches (good) and others to nothing (bad).
Of those who remain and are counted as members, a great many rarely or never attend.
I wish better for every church, including Rome’s denomination. Not just in numbers, obviously, but in changed lives and salvation.
> its a long standing trend that as people become more educated they turn away from the Catholic church.<
Well I did the opposite so I guess I’m not very trendy lol
“More than 4 million Latinos in the United States have left the Catholic Church since 2010, according to a new Pew Research Center survey that spotlighted the churchs ongoing exodus of Latinos, a group seen as pivotal to the future of Catholicism”
More reliable protestant “christians” for the democratic party.
“its a long standing trend that as people become more educated they turn away from the Catholic church”
Most illegals can’t read or speak English. They know free stuff and open borders and the party that is for open borders has a protestant/muslim president. Take your pick what he is. Catholic he’s not.
Other than a couple of Mexicans I knew in the military, every Mexican I’ve ever met in my life was a democrat.
“At the end of the day, the fact remains that the Roman church has a hole in the bottom of its bucket”
3/4th of the Christians in the world are either Catholic or Orthodox.
Try again.
I don’t doubt you. The vast majority we know are Catholic democrats. I don’t know how we happened to meet up with the conservative ones, but we were pleasantly surprised. The best thing about them is that they are vocal about their faith, and they work hard and try to lead by example.
Romney got 60% of the white Catholic vote. Illiterate black protestants and illiterate hispanic catholics voted for him. The reason? Free stuff trumps religion every time.
Hispanics that identify as Catholic allowed Obama to claim a bare majority of the Catholic vote in America. White Catholics voted for the republican. The only democrat Catholics I know are a few Mexicans that think Obama is pro-life (no kidding) and white Cafeteria Catholics that believe in abortion and homosexual “marriage”. They have renigged on the right to even call themselves, but are too damn stupid to understand that fact.
As nice as it is that the remaining white Catholics have started becoming more republican, the Catholic denomination is not a race, regardless of what you may think of the non-white members of your church.
The Catholic vote is still what it used to be.
That isn't petitfour's experience, and her experience is closer the reality reflected in the Protestant Hispanic vote.
Also, very few Mexicans vote in American elections, since only citizens can vote.
What are you talking about, Catholic Hispanics that join a Protestant denomination instead, become much better voters, more conservative, more anti-democrat.
If you care about conservative politics, how can you make such a strange mistake about the voters we need?
No, but Catholics voted for him twice, and Protestants voted against him, twice.
NK,

The Catholic Church really needs to find leaders in the Spanish community who can invite others. At our Spanish Mass the Church was packed with close to 800, Another 100 in the vestibule and they were out the door. Standing room only.
So it depends on the community. Other churches in my vicariate have three Spanish Masses at one and another has one Mass like we do.
**With the news out of Mexico it sounds like theyve abandoned God.**
Definitely in some cases.
But the persecution will come to the U. S. too. Maybe not in our life times, but it will come.
75% of Mexican Catholics voted for Obama...
