Honoring Mary, Mother of Mercy

Why do we call Mary the Mother of Mercy?

With both the Marian month of May and Mother’s Day on the horizon, it’s an appropriate time to reflect on this title.

St. Faustina Kowalska tells us she heard Mary refer to herself by this name: "I am not only the Queen of Heaven, but also the Mother of Mercy and your mother" (Diary of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska: Divine Mercy in My Soul, 330).

And Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI spoke of Mary using this title during his Angelus message shortly after celebrating Mass at Amman International Stadium during his Holy Land trip in May 2009.

"During the Mass, I spoke about the prophetic charism of women as bearers of love, teachers of mercy and artisans of peace," Benedict said. "The supreme model of womanly virtue is the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy and Queen of Peace."

A Model for Mothers

The Mother of Mercy is the ultimate motherly model to follow, according to Catholic mothers.

My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm:
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Ecce enim ex hoc beátam
me dicent omnes generatiónes,
quia fecit mihi magna,
qui potens est,
et sanctum nomen eius,
et misericórdia eius in progénies
et progénies timéntibus eum.
Fecit poténtiam in bráchio suo,
dispérsit supérbos mente cordis sui;
depósuit poténtes de sede
et exaltávit húmiles.
Esuriéntes implévit bonis
et dívites dimísit inánes.
Suscépit Ísrael púerum suum,
recordátus misericórdiæ,
sicut locútus est ad patres nostros,
Ábraham et sémini eius in sæcula.

Glória Patri et Fílio
et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio,
et nunc et semper,
et in sæcula sæculórum.

Amen.

She became the Mother of God, in which work so many and such great good things are bestowed on her as pass man’s understanding. For on this there follows all honor, all blessedness, and her unique place in the whole of mankind, among which she has no equal, namely, that she had a child by the Father in heaven, and such a Child . . . Hence men have crowded all her glory into a single word, calling her the Mother of God . . . None can say of her nor announce to her greater things, even though he had as many tongues as the earth possesses flowers and blades of grass: the sky, stars; and the sea, grains of sand. It needs to be pondered in the heart what it means to be the Mother of God.

(Commentary on the Magnificat, 1521; in Luther’s Works, Pelikan et al, vol. 21, 326)

Miriam, a Torah observant Israeli mother of the Messiah of Israel, has been counterfeited and transformed into a greco roman latin queen of heaven.. What else has been countereited?

Is it then your premise that the gates of hell prevailed against the holy catholic apostolic Church of Jesus the Messiah which he promised would triumph, or do you have an alternative Church that meets these criteria ?

In OT figure the True Church is at times represented by a woman. (Isa. 54:5,6 Jer. 6:2). When the Church apostatizes it was compared to a corrupt woman. (Jer 3:20 Eze 23:2-4). The same figures appear in the NT 2Cor. 11:2 Eph 5:25-32 Rev. 17:1-3) The sun may be thought of as representing the Glory of God especially as revealed in the gospel. The moon can be thought of as types and shadows of OT times that pre-dated and pointed to the more and fuller Gospel that proclaims Christ, His life and Resurrection.

The gates of hell certainly prevailed against Peter on the day he denied his Lord three times. The alternative Church to which is referred to which will indeed triumph is not of this world or kingdom although we may be a part of it. It is founded upon Jesus Christ Himself (not the Peter to which the catholic church claims) No earthly institution can be this Church. The Church is Jesus and to be a part of it one must submit to Him and become a part of Him and He you. He, personally, guides the Church.

The gates of hell certainly prevailed against Peter on the day he denied his Lord three times.

Yet he recovered and stood with the resurrected Messiah who confirmed his mission by turning the three denials into three affirmations:
So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

The apostles are part of the foundation, along with the prophets (there are 24 thrones in heaven: 12 + 12 (described in Revelation), with Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone: Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

There most certainly was a historic holy catholic apostolic Church:

I could go on, and on.

>"1 Kings 2:20, "Make your request, Mother, for I will not refuse you." "

Nice try, no cigar! Seems like Solomon is just obeying the 5th, not cause for intercession.

>"The crowned woman is Revelations, clothed with the sun, is thought to be Mary by the Church as well."

Some think the harlot riding the beast is the Roman church. Why would any Pope kiss the queeranus? Allah is NOT JEHOVAH! God is Love. Allah hates us! Rationalize all you wish.

I am sure. The Church is real, it's just not an earthly institution like the Catholic Church is. You don't have 12 disciples going around penniless preaching and healing. Nobody bringing sight to the blind, healing to the lame or life to the dead. You point to that original Church as your own but those were Jews. You don't even keep the same day of worship that Jesus did but claim that you're still the same Church?? Read the Bible, meditate on Jesus' life and follow His example. Go in peace.

"Nice try, no cigar! Seems like Solomon is just obeying the 5th, not cause for intercession."

I fail to see how Solomon obeying the fifth in any way disproves what I already explained regarding the role of the mother of the king of Israel and the related prefiguration.

"Some think the harlot riding the beast is the Roman church."

So? Some think the moon is made out of green cheese.

"Why would any Pope kiss the queeranus? Allah is NOT JEHOVAH! God is Love. Allah hates us! Rationalize all you wish."

I can't really say why the pope would kiss the kuran. I wouldn't advise doing it. I fail to see, however, what that has to do with the present conversation.

Islam is an Abrahamic religion. Allah is not Jehovah, but Jehovah is Allah (Allah simply means "God"). "Allah," such as it is understood by Muslims, is a very wrong, false understanding of Jehovah. So I don't think "Allah" hates us, because "Allah" such as he is supposed to be by Muslims doesn't exist.

But again, I don't see what this has to do with how Christians should understand the role of Mary.

Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.

big difference between honoring and the worship Mary receives from some circles.

no where do we have an account of Jesus praying to His mom or calling upon her for help.

Did it ever occur to you that the Blessed Mother asked that the Wedding at Cana be the last mention of her in the Bible?

I have read such a statement and believe it since she wants us always to look to her son, Jesus Christ.

I have, but more importantly, I've read the original ones, the Apostles. Nothing from the originals or their inspired writings. As for the other ECFs, Paul was right in 2 Thess 2:7 if the ECFs to any extent were advancing the idea of Mary as the Queen of heaven.

Nice sentiment until it denies the nature of God. I don't want to mind read, that's illegal, so I ask whether by this statement you are denying the omnipresence of God?

God evidently has different "levels" of presence. St. Michael the Archangel tells us he is "Always in the Direct Presence of God". Most of the rest of us certainly aren't; not even sure many other Saints are.
