Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: (Deuteronomy 32:1-2)
In the latter part of his life, Moses, the servant of God, taught Israel a song which prophesied the entire future of the people of Israel. The LORD had called Moses and Joshua into the tabernacle to announce Moses death, and to impart to Moses the song, which he was to teach Israel, as a witness for me (the LORD) against them.
And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them. Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us? And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods. Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.(Deuteronomy 32:18-19)
This song would be impressed upon the imaginations of Gods people, to serve as a point of reference through Israels darkest future days. Particularly when tumultuous future national experiences and events (such as the holocaust) would literally call the reality of the goodness of the God of Israel into question.
The Most High God lays out the entire future of His elect people. In their darkest days they could yet be mindful that all of their troubles were foretold and that though weeping may endure through a long, long evening , in the end, joy really does break forth in the morning.
He calls upon Heaven and Earth as covenant witnesses to the marriage between the LORD and His Wife,Israel.
The received teaching of God entrusted to Israel, is intended to bless the whole world. The Word of God revealed through Moses shall fall as the rain, upon the just and unjust alike, through the grace and generosity of God. The teaching of God shall refresh fallen men everywhere, in every nation , even to the very ends of the earth, as the dew on the morning grass.
A later prophet would tell us that all men are as grass, for the most part withering and blasted in the arid wilderness that is this sinful world. But wherever the doctrine of Moses and the prophets and apostles has fallen, the brown turns to green, and the parched souls burst forth into life.
My doctrine shall fall as the rain says the Lord of the universe, the God of Israel. Whenever Israel would in the future forsake her Lord, one of the consequences would be drought and famine, signifying the spiritual reality.
Whether he realizes it or not, man lives by the Word of God, every Word that comes from the mouth of God. Thus there is no drought as severe as a drought for the Word of God, nor is there any more severe famine as that of the Word of God.
But the purpose of the benevolent God is stated at the outset, that through Israel, the lifegiving teaching, the Torah of God should descend from heaven upon the sere earth, and that over the earth the teaching of life should distill, and refresh the cracked and thirsty hearts of sinful men
In no place is the refreshing rain of mercy and salvation more pronounced than in the innocent suffering and death of Christ Jesus for the sin of the world, and in his rising again from the dead as the first fruits of all who believe in His Name. It is this doctrine that ultimately refreshes, because this is true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also True Man, born of the Virgin Mary, Who participates in our weakness to raise us up into the highest places.
