We all know the Muslim world is a political and cultural disaster zone.
All you need to know is the spectacularly low level of book sales in the Arab world, and a similarly miserable record in winning Nobel prizes, whether in literature or hard science. A dozen years ago, a group of Arab scholars did a report for the United Nations that ascribed the failure of Arab society to a lack of freedom, knowledge and womenpower. And things have gotten considerably worse since 2002; the authors could write that there were no ethnic conflicts then. That’s long gone.
Never mind a failed state; we’re talking about a failed civilization, even in the most culturally advanced Muslim domain, the Islamic Republic of Iran. The root of their failure is the War Against Fun. They’re not only failures, but grim, humorless failures. This is the miserable common denominator of the Muslim world. As Jonathan Schanzer recently tweeted, “Saudi blocks Youtube. Iran blocks Instagram. We knew they could eventually find common ground.”
They know it themselves, and talk about it a lot. Several writers in the Saudi press, for example, unloaded on the ban on celebrating Valentine’s Day, as here :
[The answer] to most of our daily needs comes from the West, from the Christian world, of [the culture] we created in previous eras only a pittance remains… the prohibition on Valentine’s Day bears no relation to faith or belief, but [only] to desert thinking that lacks subtlety, targets women specifically and prevents a social encounter between men and women and normal life as in other societies. The guardians of values and customs went overboard in pressuring our society…it has become desiccated and coarse and adopted the thinking and behavior of the desert..
Or in this tirade, quoted in the same article linked above:
What grabs attention is that those who ban imitating the West on Valentine’s Day see nothing amiss in imitating the West in other ways, and are completely immersed in [Western] consumer culture and in devouring new Western products…
They know we’re better. Some of them, seemingly more with the passage of time, are desperate and brave enough to risk life and limb to fight back on behalf of fun.
The War Against Fun is deadly because it stultifies and suffocates creative enterprise. If the regime wins, and fun is killed, it would mark the death of playfulness, which is the heart of creativity. The Iranians are (falsely, I think) credited with the invention of chess, but there are no brilliant Persian chess grandmasters nowadays. Iranian humor is nasty, misogynistic and often sadistic, like the unhappy country’s ruling tyrants.
Some Iranian apologists and propagandists pretend that phenomena like the “Happy” videos show that Iranians are really having fun after all, but this is a ruse. These are protest videos–music, especially Western music, is forbidden in Iran, just as it was in Talibanic Afghanistan–and the happy people are politically threatening to the regime, like the Saudis who celebrate Valentine’s Day threaten the stability of the kingdom. And it’s significant that other “Happy” videos keep showing up on YouTube. It bespeaks the depth of the contempt in which most Iranians hold their rulers, and the regime’s rapid response, whether arresting the Happy people or demanding flogging and imprisonment for the actress who gave a formalistic kiss on the cheek of an eighty-year old at the Cannes Film Festival, shows that Khamenei and his henchmen know it and fear it.
It is no accident that women are singled out for special degradation by the armies waging war on fun, for the Muslim world rests on a solid foundation of misogyny. My professional career has been mostly devoted to the study of evil, including terrorism, fascism, Nazism and communism. That’s a lot of evil people, but I never found anything like the systematic rape of female death-row prisoners in Iranian prisons. Not even the Nazis in the death camps were so avid in humiliating their victims. Nor did I find the sort of systematic repression of women that abounds in so much of the Muslim world.
Like the reflexive attacks on the Happy people and the Valentine lovers, such actions betray fear that the people–especially the women–if left to their own devices would bring down the oppressive regimes. Which is why, as I have said for so long, women are the most revolutionary group in the Muslim Middle East.
The tyrants can’t risk granting freedom to fun lovers, especially if they are women, so the fun lovers are targeted, rounded up, incarcerated, tortured and often murdered. So long as that goes on, there is no hope for the Muslim world, nor for its best citizens.
Turkey would be a close second for very similar reasons.
I’m actually more concerned about Islam’s war on civilization.
More books are translated into Spanish in one year than have ever been translated into Arabic.
RE: Iran is the most culturally advanced country in the Islamic orbit
I think Turkey is.
Depends on how you define “Islamic orbit”. Turkey is still, thankfully, an officially secular country even though it is ruled by Islamic orbit wanna bes.
There’s no crying in baseball, and there’s no FUN in Islam!
An object lesson; if they'd had a bigger defense budget then...
I’d replace the word “fun” with “humor.” We in the west have lots of fun and I think we’re entertaining ourselves to death. Humor, meanwhile, denotes self-deprecation, irony, an ability to laugh at human foibles and to forgive others.
The Root Cause cause: a “religion” that was founded by a pedophile who “married” a 6 year old girl and began serially raping her when she turned 9.
It is absolutely impossible for anything other than pure evil to flow from the “teachings” of such a Founder.
And 1.2 billion people follow those “teachings”.
That is the root cause.
And if you’re not willing to talk about The Root Cause you might as well dance to the music of “Happy” because you are adding nothing to the discussion.
I agree. I like the word “humor” better. I like the word “love” even better.
This explains a lot about Obama. He’s the most humorless “leader” since Lenin.
“And if youre not willing to talk about The Root Cause you might as well dance to the music of Happy because you are adding nothing to the discussion.”
Just don’t try that in Iran - 100 lashes!
Both good words. Both lacking in Islam.
And Stalin was a barrel of laughs?
The OP pointed out that Obama’s humor-level is on par with that of Stalin.
Btw, TS, that is an excellent observation. In Stalin’s case, though I’m no expert, my guess is that wild, out of control, obsessive/overwhelming paranoia accounted for his humorlessness.
In Obama’s case, he has to be on the alert every waking minute for any hint of disrespect. His Malignant Narcissism is so out of control that it takes all his time & energy to assure himself he is receiving sufficient respect. [A word, interestingly enough, he cannot spell.]
The result in both cases is the same: a constantly serious, no fun, no humor, no spontaneity bore. Then of course you had Stalin responding to his paranoia by purging great masses of innocent people. Obama spending his time spitefully harming anyone & everyone he feels has shown insufficient admiration of him.
What a pair.
spending = spends
And thank you Jimmy Carter for letting the Shah fall. What could be worse than a tyrant-king? How about a country ruled by humorless, homicidal, religious fanatics? I don't think even the commies clamped down on fun like Islamist countries.
I read an interesting story, that claimed that Christianity, not fighting skills, saved England from the Vikings. The religion of the Vikings was extremely harsh, and probably one of the only religions ever created where the gods themselves die. This is not a very uplifting or positive message. The Vikings “conquered”, and then settled down in northern England, married, converted, and generally assimilated.
You can always tell how weak and flimsy a society's guiding principles are by the following:
1) how much they must mandate compliance
2) how much they must spy on the people to monitor dissent
3) how much they have to camouflage what they stand for
4) how little their principles apply to the behavior of the ruling class, the hypocrisy of the principles in action
5) how their programs constantly fail and fail in monumental crashes
6) how viciously they treat any dissent
EVERY tyranny fails because it is a cult wrapped in a STATE flag
Boiled down, the Muslim world is in a rotten situation.
Barbarism cannot survive next to civilization, because even unlearned, illiterate people can see that civilization is better. This means that the barbarian leaders must keep their people as slaves, or they will “vote with their feet”. But even that is not enough. So the barbarians are compelled to destroy civilization in its entirety.
Eventually, even the most ignorant of them do the math.
“If we are ‘the chosen people’, how come everything we do is a failure? All the battles we fight are losses? The only people we can beat are the helpless and weak? We live in a police state run by filthy dictators? We have bare feet when our enemy has shoes?”
Proclaiming “that death is better than life”, is a crappy last ditch excuse.
Eventually, they start realizing that their beloved Allah hates their guts, so, and this is the important point, what they are doing is wrong. And *not* because it is not fundamentalist enough.
You forgot to add that he was also a mass murderer and pirate.
You are right.
It probably has to do with the fact that they’re a member of NATO.
>And 1.2 billion people follow those teachings.<
Those evil “teachings” serve as their behavioral ground rules, so why is it that there are still so many fools in the West who refer to Islam as being a religion of peace?
How can we allow our society to be intentionally exposed to this philosophy with its inherent malevolence?
>Islam is the religion that attracts the stupidest and most violent males in the world.<
Are you a sexist? The female animal is known to also be attracted to this aberration. Have you seen how they mutilate their young in order to prepare them for the life of a jihadist?
There have been plenty of female suicide bombers. What their reward is in Muslim heaven is still an official mystery. My advice is to stay a distance away from females in burqas at Wallmart and other stores. You’ll never forgive yourself if they go boom!
While you have some valid points, Islam was created and propagated by men. They made all the rules which includes treating women as virtual slaves.
Our collective stupidity is our downfall. Despite the fact that many of us recognize Islam for what it is, the “collective wisdom” of the controlling majority of people in the west is suicidally deluded.
“....people in the west is suicidally deluded.”
No, that’s not the problem.
Our PC tells us that we have to be acceeeeeeptable and faaaaair to every society and that all cultures have redeeming values even they don’t and that they are of equal significance and merit even if they aren’t.
If the above were true then why is it that we have this constant global migration to the West and only to the West? I do not see Americans or Belgians leave to settle in Nigeria or Bangladesh or Somalia.
Apparently the West is superior, isn’t it? But it is too timid to admit it for fear of sounding racist. The West has this self-developed inferiority complex that it loves to cultivate and nurture.
Their motto: Who are we to judge? Their fear and lack of judgment is their downfall.
I think Turkey is correct thanks to Mustafa Kemal.
One of the oldest bookstores in the world is in Istanbul and dates back to Byzantium
There is likely at least some truth to that, but remember that the Vikings grew tired of raiding just what are now the Baltic States and were sending raiding ships as far south as Sicily and North Africa. The French gave them Normandy in return for stopping the raids on Paris, converting to Christianity and learning French. So there was a lot of contemporary exposure to Christianity in about the same era as their raids on England.
Muslims love fun.
They just don’t like other people having fun.
