Contraception: the gateway to moral decay
LifeSiteNews ^ | June 6, 2014 | Fr. Shenan Boquet

Posted on 06/07/2014 11:44:33 AM PDT by ReformationFan

Based on the findings of a recent Gallup poll released on May 30, Americans are becoming more accepting of a number of controversial issues. At the top of Gallup’s list of 19 issues was contraception, of which 90 percent of Americans approve, followed by divorce at 69 percent and premarital sex at 66 percent. Others making the top ten were embryonic stem cell research (65%), childbirth outside of marriage (58%), same-sex unions (58%), euthanasia (52%) and abortion (42%).

These numbers shouldn’t surprise us; after all Americans have been steadily rejecting a Judeo-Christian morality in favor of secular relativism for decades. In the so-called sexual revolution of the late 1960s, sex was separated from the person — body and soul — and the human body became regarded as an instrument one could manipulate and even exploit for pleasure.

Of course, it goes back more than a few decades. As is often the case, what seems like a sudden explosion was really the logical outcome of hundreds of years of growing confusion about who we are as persons.

René Descartes (1596-1650) was a French scientist and philosopher who many credit with helping to launch what later became known, somewhat ironically, as “the Enlightenment.” Among his contributions to the way people thought was to place body and soul in opposition to each other, later leading to the idea that the human body could simply be seen as an object one could manipulate according to one’s desires. Simply put, you are your mind, and you have a body; as opposed to the traditional Christian view that you are both body and soul. In this, Descartes followed Francis Bacon (1561-1626), who believed that the goal of human knowledge should be to successfully achieve not stewardship of, but domination over, nature.

It’s telling that today this does not sound controversial to many people. It’s even difficult to see how radical this change was, but let’s put it this way: instead of beginning with the idea that we grasp reality through our senses and think about it, we would now begin with our own mind as the basis of knowledge and from there subjectively interpret reality.

Books are still being written about what became known in philosophy as mind/body dualism, a view that is rejected by the Church. This dualistic view is assumed by most today, even though most don’t realize it or see how it informs even their most basic assumptions about reality, and other people.

Okay, enough philosophy. Let’s look at how this affects our lives today with respect to our own bodies and relationships, the results of which are shouting at us from the Gallup poll.

The contraceptive mentality, so identified by the Church, is a perfect example of what happens when we embrace dualism. Notice how the promoters of contraception promise a consequence-free control over our lives if we could just control our fertility with their drugs and devices. All the pleasure, none of that inconvenient fertility. My body is not me, exactly, it is an object for me to control for whatever reason I want; so sex is just about my pleasure, maybe someone else’s too. It is not necessarily about giving myself to the one I love with the possibility of creating new life as a result of that gift.

Following this view, sex becomes a mindless, meaningless function for which I can use my body. The idea of myself as a unity of body and soul is gone. And with this ignorance follows the matching ignorance of the nature of human sexuality as a unity of our basic human gifts of fertility and bonding between spouses.

This is why the world was so angered by Humanae Vitae, which arrived right in the middle of the sexual revolution. In soon-to-be Blessed Pope Paul VI’s encyclical on human life, the Church clearly reaffirms the inseparability of the unitive and procreative meaning of the conjugal act. To employ contraception and embrace its mentality is to act contrary to the God-given purpose of spousal love between man and woman, which distorts other human relationships as well, exactly as the Holy Father predicted.

Many believe that Paul VI’s work in Humanae Vitae was deeply influenced by that of the man who would become Pope Saint John Paul II. In Love and Responsibility, then-Archbishop Karol Wojtyla laid out the case for why the proper, integrated view of the human person as body and soul is necessary to understand ourselves and one another, especially in our sexuality: “In the order of love a man can remain true to the person only in so far as he is true to nature. If he does violence to nature, he also violates the person by making it an object of enjoyment rather than of love.”

To go against our true nature is to fracture our natural sense of responsibility towards another. Does anyone not see this happening today?

Obviously, seriously bad ideas have seriously bad consequences. Father Paul Marx, the founder or Human Life International, affirmed the Church’s point in his autobiography based on his broad experience in traveling the world:

Having traveled and worked in 91 countries, I find no country where contraception has not led to abortion, to increasing fornication among the young, to divorce, and to all those other evils we see today that make up the international sex mess.

And it is quite a mess, isn’t it? The Gallup poll should serve as a wake up call. If we are serious about strengthening the family, promoting the well-being of children, reversing the growing number of broken marriages in our nation, ending abortion, upholding the dignity of the aged and ill, and promoting purity and chastity, then let’s be honest about where the moral breakdown begins.

It took me decades to see this. I used to say, "Abortion is the fire, contraception is the water."

Mow I say "Abortion is the fire, contraception is the gasoline."

From this page

Christians have also historically not practiced B.C. This is not just a Roman Catholic church issue—it has been the historic and continuous understanding of Christians from the earliest times. The Protestant Synod of Dort equated contraception with abortion. Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, and many other founders of Protestantism linked B.C. with murder. The Puritain founders of the United States of America considered B.C. as bad as adultery and disqualified anyone from church leadership who practiced it. In the 1800’s the U.S. government passed laws against birth control. It wasn’t until the 1930 Lambeth Conference that the Anglican church became the first Christian community to allow birth control.

Also, Protestants on birth control-

http://catholicaudio.blogspot.com/2007/08/protestants-on-birth-control.html

CHARLES D. PROVAN

The Bible and Birth Control

Martin Luther once proclaimed that “the purpose of marriage is not pleasure and ease but the procreation and education of children and the support of a family.... People who do not like children are swine, dunces, and blockheads, not worthy to be called men and women, because they despise the blessing of God, the Creator and Author of marriage” (Christian History, Issue 39, p. 24). Luther also said that birth control was the equivalent of sodomy (probably because of the likeness between homosexual wickedness and impotent sex). John Calvin declared that birth control was the murder of future persons and the Synod of Dort issued a Bible commentary which stated that contraception was the same as abortion. If you are shocked, by the strong statements from these Godly men, that really is not too surprising, because Protestant opposition to birth control has largely been forgotten in our decadent 21th century.

"My Body, My Choice", the gateway to abortion regardless of contraception.

"My Body My Choice Ends at the Beginning of the Baby's Body", the end of abortion.

I can understand people's concern over contraception but I can also understand the other side. But we know there's no excuse or reason behind the infanticide of abortion. With contraception, there was always the chance it doesn't work and many times it does not. Abortion seals the deal. The floodgates of "free sex" opened with abortion in the early 70's with Roe v. Wade.

If there was no connection between the two, you would figure that some group out there would have accepted abortion before they accepted bc within marriage. But that’s not the way it happened, as far as I can tell.

For sure there are groups that have accepted bc within marriage that might never accept abortion. But EVERY group that did accept abortion first accepted bc within marriage. You will never see gay female clergy at the pro abortion rally waiving signs that are anti-birth control.

I read somewhere (I realize that's a dicey way to start a sentence..)

But I did read somewhere that, with the (huge but singular) exception of Russia, every nation/culture on earth that has accepted abortion, started by accepting contraception decades before that.

That's the history: first contraception, then abortion.

Yeah, Russia/the USSR is a pretty oddball one for sure. But it wasn’t a case of the Orthodox Church saying to its members ‘OK, we aren’t cool with bc within marriage, but there are abortion procedures available and they are OK so go wild.’ I thought I read somewhere that it was more a case of abortion being much more readily available than effective bc, and part of the reason the horrendous abortion rate of the early 90s plummeted was they eventually got bc.

I guess when I used the word ‘group’ I was thinking more along the lines of religious groups. As in if there was a religious group in Russia that was aghast at the thought of bc within marriage but was all for abortion. I have heard the Orthodox permit bc within marriage if their spiritual adviser OKs it, but I don’t know how often permission is given or asked for. I know they don’t dig abortion.

Apparently, contraception is the only “sin” which is somehow not even mentioned in the Bible. By contrast, sodomy is plainly, explicitly prohibited.

" . . . the only “sin” which is somehow not even mentioned in the Bible."

Sure, forget that someone was struck dead for deliberately avoiding the possibility of conception.

Protestants figure what isn't mentioned because Luther threw out a large chunk of the Old Testament proves Catholicism is wrong about other things as well and what they can't throw out, they wrest to their own destruction.

Protestant doctrine by definition includes the implied assertion that Luther was perfect but the the Holy Spirit isn't, and (since "Scripture Alone" is foundational) Jesus Christ, God made flesh, was forgetful enough to just not mention a critical fact about errors in His Holy Word. Or was it just that the imperfect (and therefore impossible to include in the Trinity) Holy Spirit couldn't deliver what Jesus Christ promised and therefore didn't lead the Apostles to all Truth resulting in their not passing along information about errors in Holy Scripture?

Luther's "Fishers of Men"

The fact of the matter is Protestantism has gradually accepted everything Satan popularizes in society so what Protestants "can't find" in Scripture is a self-serving tinkling cymbal. Protestants find or don't find whatever is convenient as their reversing what they taught for four hundred years with regard to contraception, divorce, and remarriage, along with a raft of other things proves.

Now, it's true the majority of Protestants don't realize the degree to which they've embraced absolute error just as Eve didn't, but they lovingly embrace basically the same error nonetheless. One thing for sure, those Protestant folks who have the entire Bible available along with constant exposure to the Truth but instead chose "The Father, The Son, and the Holy Self" won't be able to plead Invincible Ignorance.

Someone was struck dead for deliberately avoiding the possibility of conception when by so doing he disobeyed the command to give a child to his brother's widow.

People need to read the Bible more, and the extra-Biblical speculations of man less.

Thanks for so promptly proving Self and Self Alone is the real meaning of "Scripture Alone"
Threw out Deuteronomy along with the other books Luther didn't like ?

Or did you take it on yourself to decide that book isn't inspired and therefore you ignore it?

There is an explicit penalty spelled out in Scripture for not sleeping with and giving a child to your brother's widow, and it's not the death penalty.

If God struck someone dead for something He had already spelled out a different penalty for He broke His word which makes God Almighty a liar.

So, Deuteronomy is not the inspired Word of God or God is a liar, those are the only two arguments that can be made to support the popular Protestant lie you regurgitate.

Obviously, Protestants prefer learning their traditional ways of trying to avoid the Truth in His Word to actually studying the Scriptures they haven't yet thrown in the garbage can.

So the punishment for "deliberately avoiding the possibility of conception" is death?!

If God prescribed one punishment for not raising up seed for one's deceased brother, and He carried out a different punishment for avoiding conception, then using birth control is a capital crime! Isn't that the inescapable conclusion from your argument?

That's just silliness.

The Law of Moses was to direct MAN'S judgments, not God's. He didn't tie His own hands by the Law, but man's. He dictated the Law to man, not to Himself. He said to Israel, "You obey this law and mete out these punishments," not "I will obey it."

Now WE are going to dictate to God what He can and cannot do? We need to remember our place!

ROTFLOL !!!

Oh my, how very, very, Chrislamic of you. Preaching that God arbitrarily breaks His word is not Christianity. Iz Lame, on the other hand, preaches that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob doesn't keep His word, is arbitrary, and essentially unpredictable.

That someone who is argues contraception isn't forbidden in Scripture to pretend others who do accept the authority of Scripture and the honesty of God is forgetting their "place" is particularly funny.

Someone decides for their Self that a woman's body should be modified rather than working as God intended and they're the ones going along with the will of God and not forgetting their place? LOL, deluded folks are terribly sad but the trash they fabricate is quite frequently really funny.

As for different punishments, either you're wrong or Moses is. Since it's painfully obvious someone who denies that God keeps His word is blinded by a strong delusion, I'll stick with Moses as every Christian since the time of Christ until the 1930s did and Catholics still do. For those who prefer their comfy darkness to the light of Scripture there's always the self-serving, infinitely mailable, Protestant Scripture shedding heresy of, "Scripture Alone", available to aid their wresting Scripture to their own destruction.

The small percentage of Protestants who honestly try to obey Scripture rather than remake it in their own image must have knots the size of grapefruits on their rear ends from hitting the floor when the majority of Protestants pull the rug out from under them. The majority of what passes for non-Catholic Christianity in this country has reinterpreted Scripture and altered their doctrines to redefine as harmless every single sin that this society has popularized with those that degrade women to the level of sex objects leading the way.

The "inescapable conclusion" is that someone really is narcissist enough to assert that everyone since Moses and all Christians since Christ who believed contraception was forbidden and a sin has been dead wrong rather than accept the Truth spelled out in Scripture. No wonder there’s such widespread narcissism, a huge number of people have made narcissism an integral part of what they pretend is Christianity.

Thank you for still more clear proof that accepting Protestant doctrine more often than not leads people to accept the very same lie Eve accepted.

Without a doubt someone who claims to be right while everyone since Moses has been wrong is obviously traveling the broad road to self-destruction after accepting the strong delusion Satan morphed Martin Sin Boldly Luther's Scripture Alone heresy into. A strong delusion built on individual interpretation of Scripture Marty couldn't get away with throwing out which leads inevitably to the narcissistic worship of the, Most High and Holy Self.

The individual becoming as God, just what Satan has been so successfully marketing since Eve was his first paying customer.

Now marketed under thousands of variations of the name "Christianity" but still leading to the same old Moloch Satan has always loved and gullible people have so frequently embraced. The resulting narcissistic worship of The Most High and Holy Self always leads to accepting Moloch's promise of greater wealth and more sexual pleasure in return for going along with the mass murder of innocent infants.
