Pope tells presidents only God can bring peace to Holy Land
Original source: Catholic News.com ^ | June 8, 2014 | Francis X. Rocca

Praying for peace in the Holy Land alongside leaders of long-antagonistic nations, Pope Francis called on God to act where human efforts had failed, to end what he described as violence inspired by the devil.

“More than once we have been on the verge of peace, but the evil one, employing a variety of means, has succeeded in blocking it,” the pope said June 8 at an evening ceremony in the Vatican Gardens. “That is why we are here, because we know and we believe that we need the help of God.”

The pope addressed his remarks to Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during an “invocation for peace” in the Holy Land, to which he had invited them during his visit to the region two weeks earlier.

“I was young, now I am old. I experienced war, I tasted peace,” Peres said in an English portion of his statement. “Never will I forget the bereaved families, parents and children, who paid the cost of war. And all my life I shall never stop to act for peace for the generations to come. Let’s all of us join hands and make it happen.”

The event, at which Christians, Muslims and Jews prayed in each other’s presence, was almost certainly the first of its kind at the Vatican, according to Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See Press Office.

Isn’t the Pope supposed to be God incarnate? If so, why hasn’t he brought peace to the Middle East?

There WILL be peace and victory in the Holy Land and on Earth. God's not in the business of losing.

That’s an interesting idea, since God plainly will not allow any “two-state solution” to be permanent.

I hope you're trying to be sarcastic with this question. If not, you really need to do some research. Thx.

It was set up that way before Joshua crossed the Jordan. IMO, it is obvious even in the correlations between the blessings upon the descendants of Abraham and Ishmael.

He is the Holy Father, right? The Holy See who sees all and knows all? The only one who can interpret his own words written in the Bible?

“The pope can do all things God can do.”
Pope Clement VI., Acta Clementis, c. 1350; cited in the Roman Catholic publication: Granfield, Patrick, The Limits of the Papacy, NY: Crossroad, 1987; p.36.

Of course, that might be taken out of context.

Interesting. I thought the Pope was supposed to be familiar with Scripture.

You are insulting and absurd. I have my disagreements with Catholic leadership. However, NO true Catholic thinks the Pope is “God Incarnate”. Your post is bigoted and does nothing to promote the conservative cause.

“Isn’t the Pope supposed to be God incarnate?”

No, the pope is supposed to be given divine inspiration directly from God. Therefore the opinion of the pope is supposed to be infallible.

No, as I said, the pope is supposed to be repeating God’s instructions by divine inspiration. Being God’s mouthpiece does not make you God or even god, just the messenger. Of course, that hasn’t always worked in practice as there have been many papal edicts that have been overturned.

We get it you are anti catholic and the Pope is Satan, a popular view these days and one that hardly sets you apart as enlightened.

The pope has spoken the truth, if God wills peace in the middle east as part of humanity’s story than it will be so. It really is that easy.

Looks like the Pope never heard of free will. There will be peace only when all those involved freely choose to stop killing, and to work for peace.
Blaming the devil doesn’t solve the problem. It’s humans acting out of their free will who choose evil over good.

Requesting a clarification, if you know the answer. Is the pope the only Roman Catholic with this ability? In other words, my main question is...

What makes the pope different than any true believer in the Lord Jesus Christ?

No, the pope is supposed to be given divine inspiration directly from God. Therefore the opinion of the pope is supposed to be infallible.

Um, actually not.

If you look at it as "God will strike a Pope dead before He allows him to officially promulgate error", you would be closer the mark.

In any case that only pertains to the teaching office of the Church. Popes can be--and have been--wrong in their personal opinions.

Just watched the CNN segment on the prayer session. I think this was a unique and special event. The fact that major representatives of the Jewish, Catholic/Orthodox and Muslim religions gathered together in prayer was pretty amazing. In this instance I will defer to God’s response to Jonah’s anger over calling Nineveh to repent. I would hope we don’t worry more about the gourd than the opportunity for God to show us His Mercy (yet again). Just sayin....

Nope. See that? I just said something that is infallibly true. Yet I am neither God nor a god.

And let’s face it: Unless you can name the specific points of papal infallibility, you’re too ignorant to make any intelligent comments about the issue.

“No, the pope is supposed to be given divine inspiration directly from God. Therefore the opinion of the pope is supposed to be infallible.”

False.

1) Papal infallibility is about a negative protection of the Holy Spirit. It is not in any way a “divine inspiration directly from God.”

2) No opinion of the pope can be infallible - that’s why it’s called an opinion.
