[Cardinal] Tagle Tells Priests: Don’t Say ‘Good Morning’ During Mass

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle asked priests to do away with their habit of greeting their parishioners “good morning” during Mass, saying the expression “the Lord be with you” is already sufficient.

“With all due respect, my brother-priests, I do not see the need for saying ‘good morning’ and similar greetings when God’s real presence in the Holy Eucharist alone suffices,” he said in an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.

“Is not the expression ‘The Lord be with you’ more than enough?” added Tagle.

Like the hand holding during the Our Father. Oh that annoys me!

Just do what Salvation does and lie about your health. We all know that lying to believers is just fine. /sarc.

I strike the proper liturgical stance and close my eyes. Case closed. Sometimes a little untruth is kinder than the truth.

I think he’s doing a take on Jeff Dunham’s grumpy old man dummy Walter talking about being a Walmart greeter. “Welcome to Walmart. Get your stuff and get out”.

LOL at last, someone figured it out.

Seriously saying good morning” last I heard was not blasphemy, sinful, nor disrespectful, to anyone including The Lord in any church.

It's my understanding that "good morning" (no matter how innocuous) constitutes a "deviation from the script" that directs how mass should be conducted, and deviations are strictly forbidden. The way this story is being reported, it sounds like being friendly is also being forbidden, hence the "Walter" impersonation.

I reckon saying Shalom{sp} would spark a riot??? I'm not RC. In the church I went to the Minister of Music began the service with the choir singing then next three songs congregation sang. Then the preacher stepped up and said Let us pray then followed by prayer amen "please be seated" a welcome to ones there, followed by scripture passage, then any announcements etc. Then another song then the sermon, Alter Call, and dismissal song and a prayer used done by an elder.

No, After the Priest arrives at the altar after the first song, He says in the “Name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit,Amen peace be with you, we answer and with your spirit”. So Shalom is peace. Might raise and eyebrow or two. :)

At most Catholic Masses, the singer greets everyone and asks us all to rise and join in singing. Our priests generally go right into the Mass and save special greetings, like when the Phils won the World Series, for the beginning of the sermon.

I can remember a few times our preacher forgoing the sermon all together. The service was a singing. Just as much praise, spirits lifted, & The Lord glorified. Also in the summer time liked to occasionally use a local creek or lake for the Baptisms :>}

At daily Mass, the sermon is often omitted! One of the best parts about being Catholic.

That's a pretty sad attitude. I guess--with that attitude towards the teaching of God--that I shouldn't be surprised that Catholics don't have a problem with lying to fellow believers.

“The world slides into immorality and this is what a Cardinal is worried about?”

Poor liturgical practice is a serious concern for any cardinal.

Oh good grief! It was joke. At least we Catholics know that our priest can be a real dimwit and still proclaim the Good News and administer the sacraments. He doesn't have to be a great or original speaker.
