Iraq Catholic Leader Says Islamic State Worse than Genghis Khan

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The head of Iraq's largest church said on Sunday that Islamic State militants who drove Christians out of Mosul were worse than Mongol leader Genghis Khan and his grandson Hulagu who ransacked medieval Baghdad.

Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako led a wave of condemnation for the Sunni Islamists who demanded Christians either convert, submit to their radical rule and pay a religious levy or face death by the sword.

At the Vatican, Pope Francis decried what he said was the persecution of Christians in the birthplace of their faith, while U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the Islamic State's actions could constitute a crime against humanity.

Hundreds of Christian families left Mosul ahead of Saturday's ultimatum, many of them stripped of their possessions as they fled for safety. They formed the remnants of a community which once numbered in the tens of thousands and traced its presence in Mosul to the earliest years of Christianity.

People of other faiths in the once diverse city, including Shi'ites, Yazidis and Shabaks, have also fled from the ultra-conservative militants, who have blown up mosques and shrines and seized property of fleeing minorities.

"The heinous crime of the Islamic State was carried out not just against Christians, but against humanity," Sako told a special church service in east Baghdad where around 200 Muslims joined Christians in solidarity.

"How in the 21st century could people be forced from their houses just because they are Christian, or Shi'ite or Sunni or Yazidi?" he asked. "Christian families have been expelled from their houses and their valuables were stolen and ...their houses and property expropriated in the name of the Islamic State."

"This has never happened in Christian or Islamic history. Even Genghis Khan or Hulagu didn't do this," he said. Hulagu Khan led a.........

That won’t help garner sympathy here. Liberals adore Genghis Khan and believe his Empire was a shining light in the darkness of the middle-ages.

...Amd most of our unwashed masses can’t tell if Genghis Khan was a dinner menu selection at some drive through Chinese restaurant.

As I understand it, once the Khans had slaughtered everyone in sight, they were very tolerant of conquered countries’ religions. The Islamists should, but won’t, learn from them.

The Khans let the people live if they would only submit to their rule. They didn’t try to change the culture by forcing their religion on everyone.

Wow! What an opportunity for our SoS John Kerry to opine on this latest event. He, who was so quick to condemn our troops in Vietnam, and said our military had acted like Ghengis Khan!

He can now spew forth in his unique way the name of Ghengis Khan.

I await his consternation and condemnation of these events on Mosul.

And where are the mass protests from all those "moderate" Muslims that we keep hearing about?

It’s ironic that they would say “Worse than Genghis Khan”.
Contrary to all the liberal clap-trap that the socialists wanted to preach to us about Genghis Khan in school, Genghis Khan only wanted commerce with the West. He conquered state after state as his Mongols extended his Empire West. He did not destroy cities, but rather, he replaced the leaders with his own in order to promote commerce. His goal was trade. He never destroyed a Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist or Pagan city. When he got to Islamic cities though, the Muslims gave him so many problems that he decided that it was easier to exterminate them and raze their cities than to deal with the problems that they caused.
Seems like he knew how to deal with Muslims, so he couldn’t have been quite as bad as they made him out to be.
