Georgia Catholic dioceses ban guns, knives from church facilities
Catholic Review ^ | 7/21/14 | Andrew Nelson

Guns and other weapons are officially unwelcome at Catholic churches, schools and other buildings owned, leased or operated by the Archdiocese of Atlanta and the Diocese of Savannah in Georgia.

Atlanta Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory and Savannah Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer issued a decree prohibiting guns and knives with blades longer than 5 inches from parishes, churches, schools, administrative offices and other buildings owned or used by the Catholic community effective July 1.

In a statement, the bishops said Catholic places of worship are sanctuaries where “ways of peace and reconciliation” should be the rule.

“This decree is rooted in the belief that our churches and other places of worship are intended to be sanctuaries - holy sites where people come to pray and to worship God. In this nation of ours, they have seldom been the locations where violence has disrupted the otherwise peaceful atmosphere. Should it be necessary, we will seek the assistance of trained law enforcement personnel for protection, but among ourselves we will first seek ways of peace and reconciliation.”

Queers, in the priesthood or out, prefer attacks to be done “with a friendly weapon” rather than a nasty, violent Gun! /snark

Calling all martyrs. See you Sunday at Mass. Maybe there will even be a Mass shooting to make your martyrdom all the more significant.

This is not a good idea .. does anybody remember the woman who was “concealed carrying” on a Sunday morning .. when a man tried to shoot up the church .. and she stopped it ..!!

It is P.C. short-sightedness and an invitation for a deranged psycho to “exorcise his demons” via violent, mass-murder.

But like it or not, it’s their “house” and their prerogative. I hope the good Lord doesn’t allow their exercise of free-will to result in a preventable tragedy.

Especially in Georgia. They do love their guns there, but then I do not think there is an extremely large number of practicing Catholics in that state.

Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? Matthew 26:53

This is due to the new Georgia gun law that allows you to carry in church unless the church opts out. So the Catholic church is opting out.

Before the Catholic bashers get up a head of steam let me point out that before the new GA gun law went into effect it was not legal to carry in church or restaurants and bars. So the Catholic church is just carrying on as usual. As a Catholic and in fairness I believe a number of protestant churches are also opting out.

Excellent quote. I am trying to think where that appears in the Catholic rotation of the liturgy.

In the Tucson area, there is a church that has a sign that declares it is a gun=free zone. It makes me nervous to go there ( I rotate around the diocese) but I liked attending weekday Mass when Father Richard (now retired) was the celebrant.

I am reading Game of Thrones, and one character, the guardian of the Prince of Dorne carries around an axe. Do you think anyone would mind if I brought my camping tools with me?

You rarely, if ever, see mass shootings in police stations.

Looks like no nominally Christian group has a lock on stupidity.

The "co-exist"y juxtaposition of symbols is telling.

It's local, in a somewhat "iffy" neighborhood.

There I was, 8 feet away, with something just behind my right hip that would make them fill their episcopal drawers.

“What is their policy on homosexual priests”

Formally banned since 1962, but always assumed by the orthodox to be banned before that too.

“and homosexual marriage?”

Always banned. No such thing as homosexual marriage.
