Tom Petty says that no one has interpreted Jesus Christ’s teaching more incorrectly than Christians, as he was asked to explain the history behind his new song “Playing Dumb.”

In an interview with Billboard, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer explained his inspiration behind the song, which will be featured as a bonus cut on the accompanying vinyl release of “Hypnotic Eye.”

“Catholics, don’t write me,” Mr. Petty said. “I’m fine with whatever religion you want to have, but it can’t tell anybody it’s OK to kill people, and it can’t abuse children systematically for God knows how many years.”

“Playing Dumb” mourns the victims of sex abuse within the Catholic church, and takes aim at the major financial settlements that were awarded to some victims, Billboard reported.

“If I was in a club, and I found out that there had been generations of people abusing children, and then that club was covering that up, I would quit the club,” Mr. Petty told Billboard. “I wouldn’t give them any more money....

Great..... That’s what we do best on Free Republic..... separate the wheat from the extraneous or incorrect chaff.

as I recall however there is a hill somewhere on the east coast in a state park. We drove off interstate 95 to see it but never did actually find it.

My mother graduated from Miami-Edison in 1952 and I lived there as a tyke and as a 8 thru 10 year old. We shopped at the commissary and BX at Homestead AFB before it was destroyed.

Ha Ha Ha! I have heard that there are a few hills in the Panhandle, but I live in the very FLAT Everglades. Great for bicycling with only one gear. LOL.

I like Tom’s music, I really do.

But this statement is pathetically stupid. It’s not the faith Tom, it’s people in it. Jesus said to watch out for wolves in sheep’s clothing. Did you think he was talking about big, bruising bad guys that would be easily identified? No. The sheep’s clothing is what covers them; though they are not sheep, but from their behavior we see they are wolves. We don’t condemn the Church Jesus founded, we prosecute the wolves within it. Get a grip, man.

Oh, and SHUT UP AND SING, mmmkay?

I thought i was going to read about a race car driver.

If he WAS one I'm sure that would make him even MORE qualified to share his intelligence and deep biblical thoughts with the rest of the world.

How did I live this long without his keen guidance and illustrious example-setting in my life!

Tom who?

"Playing Dumb” mourns the victims of sex abuse within the Catholic church."

The "sleaze merchant" fails to mention the fact that it's the FAGGOTS in the church that's doing nearly all of the molesting...

So, here we have an expert on the teachings of Jesus and how *most* Christians have incorrectly interpreted them.

Who the heck is Tom Petty anyway?

So much for his (ir)relevant opinion.

IIRC, the rate of people in the clergy committing child sexual abuse is significantly lower than the rate of public school teachers, whose jobs are often protected by teacher’s unions. Where the anti-NEA song, Tom?

“Religion seems to me to be at the base of all wars,” Mr. Petty continued. “I’ve nothing against defending yourself, but I don’t think, spiritually speaking, that there’s any conception of God that should be telling you to be violent. It seems to me that no one’s got Christ more wrong than the Christians.”

So Tom thinks it’s CHRISTIANS who are murdering people in the name of religion....... Wow. It’s hard to be that ignorant.

You mean the renowned theologian The Reverend Doctor Thomas Petty? Or that bucktoothed hick who plays at being a musician?

The whole thing was illogical. Only religious people commit crimes and start wars. Ok.

I wonder if he will recognize the Messiah when He returns and orders the death of everyone who is against Him?

So I assume he never heard of Jimmy Saville, rock promoter who was a serial pedophile, which was covered up by the music industry?

**“If I was in a club, and I found out that there had been generations of people abusing children, and then that club was covering that up, I would quit the club,” Mr. Petty told Billboard. “I wouldn’t give them any more money....**

Then you wouldn’t belong to any church; send your children to any school or allow your children to watch any TV or movies.
