Iraqi Christians driven from their homes by Islamist terrorists should not flee their country, a French cardinal reportedly said this week.
Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of Lyon celebrated Mass in St Joseph’s Church, Ankawa, and was quoted as telling the Iraqis that Pope Francis wanted Christians to remain there.
Sahar Mansour, a refugee who attended the July 28 Mass for peace in Iraq, said the cardinal told the congregation of more than 1,000 people, many of whom had fled Mosul as the city fell to Islamic State fighters in June, that the Pope’s wish was for them “to be strong and stay in their homeland” and to follow the example of Christ.

Agreed. Christ endured suffering and execution for an important reason. For everyday people, unless there is a holy calling to martyrdom, preservation of life is important. To be a true martyr requires a significant discernment.
Philippe Cardinal Barbarin is, I assume, booked on the next flight to Iraq.

what a tremendous witness that would be if some of the most senior and pious elders stood shoulder to shoulder with the Iraqi Christians ! Will Pope Francis or this cardinal do it ?
Easy to say when you park your ass on a throne in the safe and comfy climes of the Vatican. These Christians are being systematically exterminated and their sons and daughters are being raped and beheaded.
The pope should either make a visit to Mosul and make his statement there in the open.. or (ONCE AGAIN) STFU!

I’d volunteer to be on that plane if they asked me. I would not however want my Pope on that plane. I don’t see that he has told the Iraqi Christians to stay there. If there is a direct quote from a credible source I would like to see it. Plus, the Pope is a lot more than just a human being. As shown with St. JP, he’s a target.

I’m guessing if I show up to get on his plane they wouldn’t let me go. LOL. I’m not even going to Mexico unless I’m on a tour with a group of people. I don’t fear death but would prefer it be with a group of like minded people.

I heard a story about someone moved by a terrorist attack to do a variation on the Texas 3 step. 1. Sell all belongings worth money. 2. Buy a one way ticket to the danger zone. 3. Live amongst the survivors and victims as a volunteer. Crazy, probably didn't have any kids. Also heard four others from different countries showed up within days of each other. Probably all were crazy.
The Pope has completely lost it.
How can he suggest that ANYONE with a Christian identity stay in a war ravaged land that is controlled by Islamic terrorists?

He is literally protected by his own army, police and other security details that number into the thousands....
And the Pope is telling these people to “hold out” while they are outnumbered 1000 to 1 by people who want them dead?
