Victoria Osteen Ripped for Telling Church 'Just Do Good For Your Own Self'; Worship Is Not for God.'
Christian Post ^ | 08/30/2014 | Leonardo Blair

Victoria Osteen, wife of megachurch preacher and New York Times bestselling author Joel Osteen, is now facing withering criticism online for a viral video clip in which she is shown telling congregants at Lakewood Church that obedience, worship and church attendance is not for God but themselves.

"I just want to encourage every one of us to realize when we obey God, we're not doing it for God—I mean, that's one way to look at it—we're doing it for ourselves, because God takes pleasure when we're happy," she said in the 36-second clip posted on YouTube, with her husband smiling at her side in approval. "That's the thing that gives Him the greatest joy…"

"So, I want you to know this morning: Just do good for your own self. Do good because God wants you to be happy," she continued. "When you come to church, when you worship Him, you're not doing it for God really. You're doing it for yourself, because that's what makes God happy. Amen?" the clip ended as congregants cheered.

Erick Erickson, politicly conservative blogger and editor-in-chief of the blog site RedState.com, summed up his reaction to Mrs. Osteen's pronouncement in a quote from the 1995 movie "Billy Madison."

"What you've just said is one of the most insanely, idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent, response, were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. May God have mercy on your soul," it ended.

I don't get what's wrong with what she said?

It all made complete sense to me.

I would argue that following the teachings of the bible will lead to a more fulfilling, longer, happier, wealthier, and healthier life.

So, just as she said when we follow God's teachings we are directly benefiting ourselves, just as when we disobey God we are hurting ourselves either in the short or long term

I would also agree that Church attendance directly benefits those who participate, by refilling our tank and allowing us to get positive feedback through socializing with others also attempting to live a God centered life.

This is why those "Joel Osteen [DEVOTIONAL]" posts should be banned at FR. Enough already. It was bad enough when this fraud endorsed Lesbian Anise Parker for Houston mayor, so he could get his new mega church zoning approved (and she is now wreaking havoc on Christian values with her "Bathroom Bill"). But now his psychopathic wife is revealing how truly devoid of Christ is their materialistic doctrine.

Please FR, no more Osteen "DEVOTIONALS". It's as antithetical to our values as a 'Daily Obama' post.

In high school, a teacher for one of my classes told us that there is no such thing as "altruism", that every altruistic act is selfish, as the doer gets something for it.

Other than Jesus, probably Mary and perhaps some selfless acts of bravery and courage, I've never been able to find an exception to his statement.

There is a reward for the altruism, he said, and that means it's not altruistic, but comes from a self centered motivation instead, however noble or saintly the act or motivation may be.

What about those martyred for their faith? Should they do “what makes them happy” instead of standing for their faith?

This teaching justifies the argument used by adulterers, “but God wants us to be happy!”

There's a lot of truth to that, and I've read Ayn Rand making the same point.

Everything has a payoff for us. Everything, good or bad, gives us something we want. Otherwise, it wouldn't be in our lives.

Even if the reward is only the feeling we get, it still pays us too.

“Vicky says lots of things when she’s not cussing out 1st class flight attendants”

That’s quite a stretch. Criticize what she just said, but she was not even accused of cussing said stewardess. The stewardess was a serial lawsuit filer who was looking to hit the lottery and lost.

For most, it ends at the grave...

That is why what Messiah taught and lived is so counter to the sinful world.

Because this life isn’t about us, here or now..

It is about Him, His Kingdom and spending eternity in His Kingdom with Him.

But hey, the olsteens have received their rewards..no arguing their beliefs have made them well off..

RE: Vicky says lots of things when she’s not cussing out 1st class flight attendants.

A reminder to folks who don’t know about this incident.

http://prince.org/msg/105/278594?pr

EXCERPT:

Continental Airlines flight attendant Maria Johnson testified that Victoria Osteen grew increasingly agitated and pushed her co-worker Sharon Brown, though the flight attendants had remained professional and reassured her a crew had been called to clean the spill, which was about the size of a 50-cent piece.

“She was demanding that attention be given to her immediately,” Johnson said. She added that Victoria Osteen kept saying: “This is ridiculous. I’m a first-class passenger.”

Brown is suing Victoria Osteen, alleging that she threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the breast before the start of a 2005 flight to Vail, Colo.

Johnson confirmed Brown’s claims that Victoria Osteen became so upset she tried to get into the cockpit and had to be physically restrained.

“She took Sharon by the shoulders and pushed her out of the way. Sharon stumbled,” Johnson testified.

If you’re going to be critical, do it with facts, not with something you pull out of your nether regions. There is no such thing as zoning in Houston

Adultery doesn't make you happy, like all sin, in the end it leads to misery, regret, hopelessness, and in the end death.

If I give you a poison that tastes great... does that negate the fact that it will still kill you? Does dying from drinking poison sound like it will make you happy? even though you might have enjoyed momentarily the flavor upon tasting it?

Such it is with many sins. Momentary, fleeting, happiness at the cost of a lifetime of misery.

Everyone argued with him, me included. Mother Teresa was the common argument, IIRC, but she would have been in pain if she had tried to live other than she did once on her path. Her life's work made her feel good and was its own reward and beyond.

I don't know how Victoria Osteen meant what she said, but it seems to fit in with what my teacher said.

Most I know who go to Church go because they get something out of it, and go to another if they don't or stop going altogether if they can't find one where they do.

Where's the trespass to forgive in that?

So you are arguing that living your life in a Godly way wont benefit you?

not lying
not stealing
not murdering
not going into debt
not worshiping money
not committing adultery
not worrying
being happy and content
not being jealous and envious of others
being good stewards of the earth
loving your neighbor
giving instead of receiving

ALL of these things and everything else in the bible WILL lead you to have a happier, healthier, wealthier, more content and fulfilled life.

Loving God and doing our best to live our life as he has directed us DOES direct benefit us.

In the book of Job

Satan raises the question of whether there is such a thing as disinterested righteousness: if God rewards righteousness with prosperity, will men not act righteously from selfish motives? He asks God to test this by removing the prosperity of Job, the most righteous of all God's servants.

I suggest you read it, it's a fairly short book and directly addresses this issue.

When people get sold on the idea that they can and should interpret Scripture any way they like because there is no authority higher than Self, they're well on the way to the Nirvana of "it's all about me".

People of the "Me Generation" who had "Me, Me, Me" drummed into their heads in every sort of advertising and entertainment flocked to the "Me" heresy leaving any and all authority other than Me behind.

Victoria just admits she's arrived at Self and Self Alone Nirvana instead of playing the game.
