Facing Double Jeopardy (Protestant/Evangelical/Lutheran Caucus & Devotional)

"If the right hand doesn't get you, then the left one will." This maxim expresses the double jeopardy faced by a prizefighter in the boxing ring. Like the ambidextrous pugilist, our adversary, Satan, has a two-pronged strategy. To defeat him, we must wage war on two fronts. The tactic is simple. He conquers by spreading disinformation about himself. He divides the church by creating two myths, two erroneous views of his own identity: The first is that he is a myth. The second is that he is as powerful as God.

The first deception from Satan about Satan is that he is a ridiculous myth. As a mythical figure, he can be put in the category of goblins, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night. Nothing pleases Satan more than to persuade people that he doesn't exist at all.

If we are convinced that Satan doesn't exist, we will hardly waste time preparing to make war against him or find ways to resist him. To put on armor to ward off imaginary fiery darts is as much a fool's errand as Don Quixote's tilting at windmills. On the other hand, a stealth bomber can have its way, unimpeded in its mission, if the enemy is persuaded that there is no such thing as a stealth bomber.

Satan loves the modern image of himself. Who gives credence to an ugly little imp in red flannel underwear with cloven feet and horns, bearing a trident and flashing a diabolical grin?

Coram Deo

What has been your perception of Satan in the past? How has this perception affected your response to him? To God?

Passages for Further Study

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

Revelation 20:2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years,

Who knows what Satan thinks? We know he is a “liar and the father of lies” and that “he was a murderer from the very beginning”. He is author of THE Lie....”You shall be as God, knowing good and evil”. We know he isn’t omnipresent because he runs to and fro (Job). He operates in a system, the world/the flesh/the devil. He whispers lies into willing ears and sometimes they run with it for millennia (Mahomet) and he somehow energizes the dead religion invented (mystery of lawlessness).

One thing I cherish: God will speak into HIS ear at some point, “Your time is short”. The resulting anger will be frightening but cannot compare to the terror God has in store for him on The Day of the LORD.

No, Satan can not be in two places at the same time. He is not omniscient. He may not know each and every one of us Christians by name, but you can best believe some of his minions certainly do. Keep up the fight.

I forgot to add a hearty amen to that. I will never understand what motivated him, to think he could defeat God.
I think a trillion eons in the lake of fire, will not make Satan any more repentant, than one second will. My opinion is, that he, along with all others in Hell, will grow even more evil as eternity rolls on. That is why Hell continues, because sin continues, and must be forever restrained.

We are all "created" beings. Everything begins (and ends) with God. If you believe, He is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent.

If you look at the masterplan, it is all revealed in Scripture. Consider the following: Acts 13: 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

23 “From this man’s descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised.

We are all part of God's plan (duh!). But, some of us think it's all about us. It isn't. God created us so He could have a family. Read the GuideBook!
