Stanford Students to Crusade Against Catholic Saint's Name
Breitbart ^ | 3/15/16 | Adelle Nazarian

Posted on 03/15/2016 6:33:18 PM PDT by marshmallow

Students at Stanford University, inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, are attempting to scrub names and symbols that honor people who are historically connected to slavery and colonialism from the college campus. The move echoes a series of colleges across the nation whose students have attempted to do the same.

The latest target in this battle is Saint Junipero Serra, an 18th-century Spanish, Roman Catholic priest and missionary who was canonized last September. His name is on two dorms, an academic building a street and the mall that is the school's official address.

It is "important for the university to recognize that we need to reinvest and reappropriate these spaces in the names of indigenous people," Stanford student Leo John Bird said, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Serra started nine missions that would go on to lay the foundation for what would become California. In a video posted to the Mercury News, Bird said that in these quarters "there was jailing of indigenous women in quarters away from indigenous men so that Spanish soldiers could come in and rape them and continue to perpetuate abuses against culture."

I’m a Protestant and grew up in So Cal and I remember taking trips to see his missions. Seems like they just want to destroy history and leave only Frederick Douglas and Oprah

A not so unexpected outcome of years of public school education. Political correctness run amok.

LOL. Use of the word “crusade” in the title is a nice touch.

There is no documented evidence that Fr. Serra established or even countenanced separate jail facilities for men and women "for the purpose" of allowing soldiers to rape the women. Fr. Serra, in fact, spent his life protecting the natives from the depredations of soldiers and settlers, going so far as to relocate a couple of missions further away from the bad influence of the military garrisons.

The lying slurs against this man of God never stop because the people that make them know their audience is even more ignorant of history than they themselves are.

"there was jailing of indigenous women in quarters away from indigenous men so that Spanish soldiers could come in and rape them and continue to perpetuate abuses against culture."

Detestable lies. Moral defamation. Blood libel.

The truth is the exact opposite. Junipero Serra incurred the wrath of the soldiers at the nearby Spanish Presidios because he forbade and prevented rapes and the soldiers' acquiring of Indian women as concubines via capture, purchase, seduction or force.

He traveled from Alta California to Mexico City to lodge formal complaints with both civil, military and ecclesiastical authorities, against the sexual exploitation of native California women.

Lord, I hate, I hate (!) the cultural vandalism of the Left.

It isn’t just cultural vandalism, it’s also hatred of the Catholic Church and Christianity in general.

Absolutely true. It really angers me, to behold this pointedly anti-Christian combination of ignorance and malice. And I think it could turn into something yet bigger and uglier, something like the Maoist Cultural Revolution.

Or ISIS. Dynamiting and pulverizing every bit of Christianity out of every public space and every private memory.

Talk about inventing your problems. BLM kids are finding the tiniest thing to be offended about while attending one of the most prestigious colleges on earth? How much are they paying? Any AA benefits there BLM? Care to pay the full ride yourselves without evil whitey’s scholarship help? If it’s so awful and racist at Stanford why not go to fresno State. They have a statue of that shakedown thug Caesar Chavez they can marvel at.

I used to think Stanford wasn’t as nutty as UC Berkeley, but it sounds as if they are about the same.
