Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible
Peter
(The Gospel according to Mark )
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?
4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
6 Dont be alarmed, he said. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.
8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
(Mark 16)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

We are beginning our look at Peter's reaction to the Resurrection of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark, for the simple reason that Matthew doers not mention Peter in his account of the Empty Tomb.
Mark does mention Peter, but the Angel mentions him separately from the other Disciples. There can be a number of reasons for this, perhaps singling Peter out as the Leader, but I think it goes deeper than that.
We have just read the awful story of Peter's Denial, recorded in all Four Gospels. It is one of the few incidents besides the Passion and Resurrection that is actually covered in all Four.
I can't imagine the shame, devastation, guilt, and horror that Peter was experiencing. Perhaps he thought that he could no longer be a Disciple, much less a Leader, after that disastrous evening. It has only been three days since he repudiated his Lord, with curses and oaths, all to escape the wrath of...who? ...a servant girl and a few low-level lackeys in the High Priest's household. If he couldn't stand up to them, how could he ever face the world with his Master's Message? All four Gospels say that he "wept bitterly". He was probably still weeping three days later, as the enormity of his role in Jesus torture and horrible death began sinking in.
The Angel differentiates..."Tell His Disciples, AND Peter".
"Yes," God is saying, "Be sure and tell Peter. Make sure you let him know that I still love him, that he is still My Disciple, and I have big plans for him."
I do not wish to "read in" anything that isn't there, so I emphasize that this is just what this passage says to me personally. (Exegesis is getting things OUT of Scripture, and Eisegesis is putting your own stuff IN. I pray I will never be guilty of THAT!)

Good analysis, LTOS. I hadn't noticed that the angel specifically mentions Peter.
Numbers 6: 23 Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: The Lord bless you, and keep you [protect you, sustain you, and guard you]; The Lord make His face shine upon you [with favor], And be gracious to you [surrounding you with lovingkindness];The Lord lift up His countenance (face) upon you [with divine approval],And give you peace [a tranquil heart and life]. 27 So Aaron and his sons shall put My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.
And this we do and proclaim and agree in Jesus name. Amen.
