Newman on the Syllabus

Cardinal Newman didn't seem to think that the Syllabus of Errors was infallible at all.

77 years, Mostly Catholic grade schools, last 3 years Catholic high school, 1 son graduate of Notre Dame, active in my parish, 4th degree KofC, and your message meant nothing to me...don't condemn, EXPLAIN.

Well, your poor parents apparently didn't their money's worth on your Catholic education and I have nothing to say but bad things to say about Notre Dame University and that goes all the way back to the sob, Theodore Hesburgh.

As far as your DEMAND for an explanation of the Catholic confessional state, I recommend you start here:

An Apology for the Confessional State

If you have any other questions about our religion, feel free to PM me.

My Catholic education was just fine, thank you....My Notre Dame graduate is a computer wizard who designs software programs for LARGE companies. Hesburgh was just fine, the liberal slant of Notre Dame does not impress me at all and neither my son, nor I will donate money to them. The article that you led me to read was mostly gibberish and had no real purpose at all.....I got nothing out of it, but I will re-read it when UI have a little more time.

Go Irish....football season is coming soon!!!

If you think Hesburgh was just fine, I stand by my critique of your “catholic” education.

>>The single greatest cause of the decline of Notre Dame as a truly Catholic university was the Land O’Lakes Statement of 1967, widely believed to have been formulated primarily by Father Hesburgh himself. The statement was, in effect, a declaration of independence of American Catholic colleges from the Catholic hierarchy.<<

The Catholic confessional state is one that is explicitly Catholic. That is, the government declares the Catholic faith the official established religion, upholds the truth of the Catholic faith and teachings of the Church, and may even limit or forbid other confessions.

By my reading, it is compatible with the American Constitution because—as many people often forget—various states had official established churches well into the 1800s while many of the Founding Fathers were still alive. The Constitution only forbade a *federal* established religion.
