It (the Sixth Commandment) cannot even serve to justify easily the indissolubility of marriage, but on the contrary assumes a right to divorce that also existed in Israel.”

The whole point of the 10 Commandments is to serve as a yardstick, an immutable standard , to measure our own grandiose notions of righteousness against God’s standard.

“There is none righteous; no, not one.” Romans 3:10.

The Law is to show us that we ALL need a Savior.

“I’m OK, and you are not so bad” tends to put us on cruise control with regard to our attitude toward our relationship with a holy God.

God has given marriage and the sexual relationship within as a magnificent blessing - if both receive it as from God. Rejection of this is spitting in God’s face, telling Him, “You do not really love me.”

Fornication and adultery tell God that we do not trust Him to provide for all of our needs (not necessarily all of our “wants”.)

Considering the responses, comment number 2 removed by the moderator must have been a doozy.

"... the Ten Commandments, like all rules and laws, respond to specific social challenges and are products of their time. In order to clarify the original intention of the Sixth Commandment, it is necessary to consider the context in which it was born.” This is the sort of thing that really makes me want to SCREAM! GRRR! This nothing less than sophistry from a pseudo-intellectual imbecile! This is essentially the same argument the 'gun grabbers' use when they claim the U.S. Constitution is a living document. "The Second Amendment does not apply to modern weapons, because the Founders could not conceive of semi automatic weapons." Doesn't he believe the sacred scriptures to be Divinely inspired, and inerrant? Maybe God was wrong about this, and maybe the Magisterium and the CCC need my brilliant interpretation of the Commandments to correct their errors? ... Audacity re-defined!

If the person responsible for this -—Schonborn? -— were in my RCIA class, I would not recommend his reception into the Catholic Church.

I would say he should not be baptized until he exhibits a sincere desire to accept and live Catholic faith and morals.

What is the point of including the word adultery and not the others like fornication? Did God make a mistake or did Moses or did they jus run out of stone?

#1 God does not make mistakes.
#2 Although Moses would have needed a "10 man working party" to carry the tablets down from Sinai, there was plenty of stone.
#3 God does not play "Simon Says" or "Mother May I". He is neither a lawyer nor a politician playing word games. His 'yea' is 'yea' and His "nay' is 'nay'.

The "others like fornication" list would be lengthy and open to the same sort of parsing that the Serpent gave Eve in the Garden (He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?”)

"You shall not commit Adultery" is shorthand for, "Sex is reserved for your spouse, within marriage. Period."

Contrary to 'popular opinion', God is not "against Sex"; He is not a celestial 'wet blanket'. In the physical relationship between a man and a woman, He has given us a wonderful gift! There are many, many practical reasons He has restricted this to within marriage.

The bottom line is:
He loves us.
He has said, "No sex outside marriage".
We can trust Him.

I agree wth number 1, that’s my point if sex was a sin he would have said so in the commandements, nut just adultery. The other commandments are sweat and specific, why wouldn’t that one be. Adultry is when i married person as sex outside the marriage. That is easy to understand.

Lastly, I’ll take the commandments as God’s word and not your explanation expanding on them, if you don’t mind. And I include the greatest commandment.
