Catholic Doctrines ‘No Longer Make Sense’, Says Fr Tony Flannery [Ireland]

People are ‘rejecting [traditional] doctrines as childish fantasies and walking away’

Redemptorist priest Fr Tony Flannery has questioned traditional Catholic Church teachings on God, Mary and the Trinity, which he said, “no longer make sense to the modern mind, and are being quietly rejected even by people who still attend church”.

Some of these doctrines, he said, “are not scripture based” and come from “a time when there was a very different understanding of the world and of humanity”.

Fr Flannery, a founder-member of the Association of Catholic Priests, said science has greatly influenced “the way we look at ourselves and the universe, and church doctrine has not adapted to this”.

In 2012, the Vatican banned Fr Flannery from public ministry for expressing his more liberal views on priesthood, women priests, homosexuality and contraception.

Excuse me....

The Mysteries of the Faith, are called “Mysteries” because they don’t “make sense” without Faith.

Prophecy fulfilled before our eyes.

Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 1 Timothy 4:1 ESV

Yep. Tell us something we all don't know.

it is irrational to think that all Truth necessarily must be perfectly understandable and “rational” to (limited) the human mind.

after rationality, comes faith....

I am not a RC, but if you believe there is an omnipotent God, and able place an unwavering trust in him, then all these folks who have other Gods such as self, and idols such a celebrities and engage in some of these lifestyles we see today, will be unable to understand, or even condone that which we call God’s way.

Where in scripture does it state there can be no religion which uses tradition?

Ah, I see. Perhaps you cherish your traditions above truth.

Do you also judge your traditions by the measure of God’s inspired Words, or do you elevate your cherished traditions to be equal or higher than what God specifically said?

“And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?”

- Christ

Ah, I see. Perhaps you cherish your traditions above truth.

Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. (2 Thess 2:15) [KJV]
The traditions of the Church are not false. Indeed, we are commanded by the Bible itself to keep them.

But let us add some honesty here. While Protestants rail against Catholics holding on to Church Tradition, they themselves are just as bound be traditions as Catholics. They just do not admit it. Sola scriptura, sola fide, denial of the Sacraments and the denial of a visible, hierarchical church are Protestant traditions, not Biblical teachings.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. . . ." - Jesus

Either one believes this outright declaration, as recorded, or one doesn't. Whether a particular religious doctrine affirms or denies it will be proven to be irrelevant.

Why is it that Protestants cannot engage in intelligent debate without making snarky comments or digs? Is it impossible to do that? It devastates the argument from the get-go.

Traditions are fine, if they are subject to the authority of Scripture - not forbidden, nor prohibited, nor contradicted.

As to the passage of Scripture you quoted, we have no list of those traditions Paul referred to. As such, none of the traditions you hold to are known Apostolic traditions. Most arose later in history.

It isn’t a blank check.
