Pope Francis has reiterated his belief that marriage can only be defined as a union of one man and one woman, explaining that “we cannot change it.”
In a series of interviews with French sociologist Dominique Wolton that was published Wednesday in a book whose title translates to “Politics and Society,” the pontiff reaffirmed Church teaching on marriage.
“We cannot change it. This is the nature of things,” explained Francis regarding the traditional biblical definition for marriage, adding that gay marriage should be “civil unions.”
Francis also maintained the Church’s teaching on abortion, referring to the procedure as “murder of an innocent person.” He added that women who’ve had abortions can be forgiven, stating that “if there is sin, forgiveness must be facilitated.”
“Teaching children that they can choose their gender, he said, also plays a part in fostering such mistakes about the truth or facts of nature,” reported Catholic News Service, which got an advanced copy of the book.

I would not count on that.
All he is really saying is that only a man and woman can participate in the sacrament of matrimony.
He hasn’t said anything about the sinfulness of same-sex relationships.

He reiterated in a just released interview that marriage can only be between one man and one woman. If homosexuals are in some kind of state sanctioned union, call it a civil union if you want to, but don't call it a marriage.
Why would the pope accept, civl unions by catholics. isn’t that endorsing homosexual behavior?

He didn't say he'd accept civil unions by Catholics. He was speaking generally; that if there are persons out there in a relationship sanctioned by the State (not by the Church), that they shouldn't be called marriage. It's not an endorsement of civil unions; it's recognizing that they're out there and stressing that these are not and cannot be, marriages. They can call it civil union" if you want, but don't call it marriage.
This has always been my position as well. I really don't care what non-Christian homosexuals do. That's between them and God. If they want to get hitched by the State, more power to them. But don't expect me to accept it as "marriage" or the Church to endorse it under that name.
