Washington D.C., Sep 28, 2017 / 05:47 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- A Baptist theologian, Dr. Albert Mohler, has claimed that Fr. James Martins teaching on sexuality is an entire re-orientation of the Catholic faith.
Mohlers comments refer to Martins suggestion that Catholics should refer to same sex attraction or an LGBT identity as differently ordered rather than the Catechisms use of intrinsically disordered. Mohler says the suggestion fundamentally changes Catholic teaching on sexuality, and on creation itself.
In comments to CNA, Martin rebuffed Mohler's comments, calling them obtuse, and stating that those who identify as LGBT, or those who are not educated in philosophy or theology, could easily perceive the Churchs language to be cruel.
So my point is simply that we have to be sensitive to the language we use. We can't pretend that language like that isn't harmful, Martin told CNA.
Martin has drawn criticism after the publication of his most recent book, Building A Bridge, which addresses the Churchs engagement with those who identify as LGBT. Most notably, he has been critiqued for the books avoidance of Catholic teaching on celibacy and chastity, and for the books lack of engagement with Catholics who identify as LGBT, but observe the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. In August, Martin announced on Facebook that he intends to respond to these critiques in a revised edition of the book.
Martins comments came in response to a podcast by Mohler, who is president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
On the Sept. 19 edition of his podcast, The Briefing, Mohler points to a passage in Martins book, which suggests replacing the theological term disordered with the phrase differently ordered.
If you say that LGBT sexual orientation is merely differently ordered, you have actually not only changed the catechism in this specific case.....

He’s no Malachi Martin.
James Martin buys into the "identity" lie when he says that the language of the Catholic Catechism cruelly teaches that LGBT people are "totally sinful."
It's the sleight-of-hand which confuses sodomitic acts (which are sinful) with "LGBT people" (who may or may not be sinful, depending on whether they are committing and affirming sinful behavior.)
This retrofitting of perverse sex as an identity (LGBT) instead of a behavior, leads to all kinds of confusion and hurt.
Mohler gets it.
He also gets that redefining the language deconstructs, not just truths about sexual virtue, but all morality and all theology right down to what is the Divine will and what it is to be human.
What a good Catholic this Baptist would be. Come on over, Dr. Mohler!
It takes the “heterodox” to teach orthodoxy to the Jesuit who is supposedly orthodox.
There is a dead Francis in heaven who took the gospel to China and Japan, who is crying over the live Francis who watches over the destruction of his church. There will always be Jesus’s church, but it is becoming less and less Francis’ church.
A better characterization would be "demented rantings of a depraved lunatic".
Ann Barnhardt's got a novena going for the salvation of Fr. Martin's soul.
