"Champion"

We must always be careful when we need a "Champion". People will ALWAYS fail us, no matter how sincere their intentions may seem. Our Only Champion is the Lord, and WHAT a Wonderful Champion He is!

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

It was with gleeful anticipation that I started watching the new series on the History Channel about The Templars. My love for stories from this era in human history has been with me since childhood.

I think it stretches back to my watching the movie "Ivanhoe" on a B&W 21" TV Screen, perhaps in the late 50s. (The movie and I were born the same year!)

In the movie, Liz Taylor played an exquisitely beautiful Jewish Girl who was falsely accused of sorcery. A Knight, just home from the Crusades, defends her, even though he risks all in doing so because of the antisemitism and other issues. In effect, he becomes her "Champion".

In our modern-day language, a "Champion" is someone who wins in the final round. We have "World Champions", "State Champions", and, in Boxing, "The Champion of the World" with a ridiculously BIG Belt that goes with it. As a Bostonian, I am happy when The Red Sox win the World Series, or when the Patriots win the Super Bowl, but when they do, it gets a little weird around here. The parades and accolades are so "Over The Top", that it really makes you wonder! They are called "Champions" but that is NOT the original meaning of the word.

A "Champion" in the original sense, is someone who stands up and defends someone who can't defend himself, at great risk to his own safety. A woman praying in front of a "clinic" to end abortion is a Champion. A firefighter who runs UP the stairs in the WTC on 9/11 is a Champion. A Middle-School kid who confronts a bully to rescue a smaller victim is a Champion too.

The idea of a "Champion" come from Scriptures, and it was one of the vows that the "Knights in Shining Armor" took. "Defending those who can't defend themselves" is one of the Laws of Chivalry. I really hoped this new series will emphasize that. Actually, the first episode DID NOT disappoint me! Right away, the main character, Landry, (Which oddly enough is one of my ancestral names) champions the cause of a whole community of Jews! I think it's gonna be a good series!
