The word of mouth, person to person, spread the Gospel this is called Holy Tradition.
But they didn't add to it or take away from it like the Church of Rome has over the centuries.
You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
