I used to be a pretty hardcore supporter of the DP. And I am still not against it in all circumstances. But my enthusiasm has cooled quite a bit, mainly for the reasons you cite. The conservative argument against capital punishment is... do we really want to trust an institution with the documented efficiency of the post office and the compassion of the IRS with the power of life and death?

“.I don’t know if there is such a thing in Buddhism.”

There sure are. And if you don’t get Buddhist last rites, you come back as a bug. Not a cool bug like a scarab, or a dung beetle, or a killer bee.... but something gross, like a slug, or a roach.

+1

I am not absolutely against the DP. But I have become very restrained in my support for it.

“There is a huge BIOHAZARD associated with that idea.”

You just roll out plastic drop cloths on the floor, like in Lethal Weapon 2. Make em stand on the plastic as the verdict is read. Make it more entertaining!

The death penalty is an excellent remedy. We rarely use it. You want exceptions, let’s go the other way. Ted Bundy escaped prison and killed more women, eventually ending up in the only state that would execute him, Florida.

Want more dead people? Keep rooting for the murderers.

Nobody is ‘rooting’ for murderers, here.

We’re trying to find a path that combines society’s needs with a religious, moral and philosophical ideal consensus.

We can lock these people up efficiently, if we want to. We don’t NEED to kill them for practical reasons. We kill them mainly for revenge.

(And it costs a lot less to keep them alive, in the long run.)

This is the upcoming execution that has brought this change.

Nidal Hasan

Also known as "The Fort Hood Shooter" Hasan was an Army officer, a psychiatrist stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. On Nov. 5, 2009, Hasan entered the Soldier Readiness Center, pulled a handgun, and, for 10 minutes, began shooting at the personnel there. He killed 13 people and injured another 30 before being shot himself by Fort Hood's Army Civilian Police. The gunfight rendered Hasan paralyzed from the waist down.

The Army charged Hasan with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder, with the Army announcing early on that Hasan was eligible for the death penalty and that the Army would seek that sentence.

Do the last rites require physical proximity (say administering communion/holy water/laying on hands)?-

Can it be done prior to execution in some other room?

What is the danger in the execution room as opposed to some other room?

And it could happen to any of us. Something you seem to realize, but there are number of “just fry ‘em” keyboard warriors here on FR. There are innocent people in jail. Certainly a small minority, but it happens.

And, esp. w/ the political lawlessness and ‘justice’ we have today (railroading ala Covington/Duke Lax vs. Jussie...won’t even go to Cankles/Comey/Zero territory)...

Lawyers keep these murderers alive for decades but yet demand the death of a child in nine months or less; BTW, that eagle feather you just picked up will put you in prison for 20 years.

I read a book many years ago, written by a physician who had to oversee executions at Sing Sing in the early-to-mid-20th Century. I’ve never been able to find that book again, but the doctor made a very good case for his opinion that the death penalty was NOT a deterrent.

It may or may not be a deterrent but it sure is an effective punishment.

A well reasoned response. Well worth consideration.
