This shows us Jesus was obviously in FAVOR of the use of fossil fuels:

“MATTHEW 25
1 At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any OIL with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took OIL in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your OIL; our lamps are going out.’

9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell OIL and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “But while they were on their way to buy the OIL, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’

12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’

13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.”

Tell ya what. You stop your priests from sexually assaulting our children, then we can talk about other peoples’ inadequacies. Got a hell of a lot of work to do to get to there, folks.

They lack jurisdiction, not authority.

Not sure what the distinction is --- maybe you can explain (I'm no canon lawyer, thanks be to God) --- but my guess is that they lack both jurisdiction *and* authority.

They can teach the overall moral law. Care of the Garden *was* one of the primordial commandments. God is the owner-operator, and we are but the stewards here, His viceroys on this planet. God made the earth for everyone, not only for the rich or for the generation that's presently walking around on it: so we owe it to others, to future generation, and to God, not to waste or trash the place.

But as for the particulars of public policy: that is the arena of action of the laity, not the clergy. They are usurping our role AND they don't know what they're talking about.

That's why I can say, with all my traditionalist Catholic old lady piety, "You need to just butt out -- your Excellencies."

Looks like homosexual advocate Robert McElroy is pushing this--from the article: "Ahead of the pastoral statement’s release, Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego told Crux that he hopes it serves as an effective tool in providing both a deeper understanding of ecological concerns and cause for action."

Because this is an official letter from California bishops, is it a moral imperative for Catholics in the State?

Only to the extent it represents actual Scripture, Catholic tradition, and magisterial teaching, which is very little. The actual document is online here. Most of it consists in a historical review of California's ecology and vague generalizations about being prudent in managing the environment by improving preparation for droughts, etc. Now being prudent is certainly a traditional teaching, but how you actually exercise being prudent is a matter of prudential judgment, and the document's handful of concrete proposals--such as its proposal to lower carbon emissions ("Enact policies that further improve air quality and drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions and other polluting gases. This includes the substituting of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources as well as developing greater energy storage and efficiency. Ensure that any transition from a fossil-based economy to one of renewable energy does not add to the burden of the poor.")--are matters of prudential judgment not binding on Catholics. Likewise, its scientific opinions, such as the statement, "A broad consensus among scientists worldwide identifies the primary cause of climate disruption as the burning of fossil fuels for energy generation, industry, and transportation," are just that, opinions, not doctrines.

Hey Fawtha,
My brothers and sister, me, Mariano, Thomaso, Eduardo, and Theresa, knowing how much you don’t want to be reminded of the United States history of repression, patriarchy, etc, have decided that we will no longer give the church pictures of dead presidents on Sunday.

Instead, we have started issuing carbon credits with portraits of Obama, Biden, Kerry, Clinton(s), Guevara, etc to help uplift the spirits of the poor and oppressed in the homeless shelters as they try to score their next fix.

We know that as you no longer drive around in your parish and diocese owned gas guzzlers selling indulgences, (which we will encourage everyone to buy with the carbon credits bulging out of their pockets), that you will have more time to sing the praises of the Gospel of the SJW that you have become.

As you replace your carbon based electric heating, cooling, and cooking implements you and your staffs will have time to install solar and wind powered energy generation devices, but remember they cannot be manufactured with oil based manufactured power sources, or nuclear.

Better organize you multitudes of non educated, illiterate in many languages new to the states workforce, many of them have been here many, many times, to carry the rocks to make the dams to power your belt driven hydroelectric plants, but be careful that you don’t upset the ecological balance.

Boy, I think this ecological conversion stuff is gonna be some hard work.

This can’t be why the Muslims want to go back to the seventh century, is it?
