This concept, this man-made theory of purgatory is just so much Catholic dogma. And before ebby gets upset at that definition he should look at the article a little closer. That’s what the author is calling it. Catholic dogma.

If Purgatory was real we could read about it in the Bible. It is NOT there.
Jesus spoke of heaven and hell...but NEVER of purgatory.

Purgatory is a lie of satan. It is a path to salvation apart from Christ. How many will go to hell depending on this heresy instead of the saving grace of Christ?

What Hell did Jesus Christ descend to on Good Friday?

Can you answer the question posed in post #23?

Paulie’s got it wrong.

Just one mortal sin and you go straight to Hell.

Let me answer your question with a question. When you lose an argument do you always start another argument as you are doing here?

You’ve already been proven wrong about purgatory. Why do you want to start (and lose) a new argument about descending into hell?

“Try reading the article. “

I did, and I ask again, where is the Biblical evidence of purgatory ? Biblical as in the Bible of the Council of Nicea, not the Roman add-ons .

During all the years I was a Catholic, I was bewildered over the prospect of torment in purgatory. Would a just and merciful God condemn me to eons of pain for whatever trivial sins I committed during my life as a faithful Catholic?

It’s a daunting proposition, and one that, on a common sense basis, contradicts any notion of a just and merciful Heavenly Father.

I’m in the process of going LCMS Lutheran, where the theology actually makes sense.

Do you think you can now avoid purgatory by not being "a faithful Catholic"?

How convenient.

More plus points for the Orthodox church...didn’t go with the splinter church in Rome’s purgatory.

Very interesting.
It's late and I'm tired but I will read it tomorrow.

But, purgatory IS a stumbling block for non-Catholics. I never understood why since, at the end of our time in purgatory, we would be with God for eternity.

Is there NO punishment except eternity in hell? Sounds too harsh for our loving God.

“With”? On purgatory? or in general? Not really “with” anybody right now...would go Eastern Orthodox (Armenian, Greek, Serbian) if I wanted the High Church “original church” experience. All the goodness w/o the oppressive hierarchy structure.

Like Patriarch Krill excommunicating anybody who doesn't bow to him and his buddy Putin?

Please quote the chapter and verse about Jesus going to Hell.
Post it so all can see. Use a translation that you like.

There is one heaven and one hell. Jesus never spoke of Purgatory. Never ever. Not even once. show me.

Your rather superior — dare I say smug — attitude isn’t likely to win any converts to the Catholic view.

For my part, I hardly fit the stereotype of the “embittered lapsed Catholic.” I’ve just found that sola fide, sola scriptura makes are lot more sense than the Roman amalgam of scripture, church tradition, and ex cathedra dictates.

I still have a soft spot for Aquinas, however.

From the Catholic New Revised Standard Version bible:

2 Cor 5:10 - For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil.

Lk 12:3 - Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops.

Ecc 12:14 - For God will bring every deed into judgment, including[a] every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Heb 9:27 - And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment

Mt 12:36 - I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter

Rev 20:11-15 - Then I saw a great white throne and the one who sat on it; the earth and the heaven fled from his presence, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Also another book was opened, the book of life. And the dead were judged according to their works, as recorded in the books. 13 And the sea gave up the dead that were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and all were judged according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire; 15 and anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

1 Corinthians 11:31-32 - But if we judged ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined[a] so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

Heb 10:17 - he also adds, “I will remember[a] their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

Matthew 25:31-46 - “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family,[a] you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

John 3:16-17 - “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
17 “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through

Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 8:12 - Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

John 5:24 - Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life.

2 Tim 4:8 - From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Mark 16:16 - The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned.

Rev 3:5 - If you conquer, you will be clothed like them in white robes, and I will not blot your name out of the book of life; I will confess your name before my Father and before his angels.

Rom 8:1-2 - There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit[a] of life in Christ Jesus has set you[b] free from the law of sin and of death.

Ep 1:7 - In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace

Heb 9:14 - how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit[a] offered himself without blemish to God, purify our[b] conscience from dead works to worship the living God!

Heb 9:22 - Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

1 Jn 1:7 - but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Heb 10:19 - Therefore, my friends,[a] since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus,

As you can now know, our sins are shouted for everyone to hear and we all have this happen on Judgment Day, but those truly in Christ are deemed pure because we are in the Book of Life as accepting Jesus, and this allows us to be in Heaven.

There is no Purgatory, period.

Please quote the chapter and verse about Jesus going to Hell.

[31] Foreseeing this, he spoke of the resurrection of Christ. For neither was he left in hell, neither did his flesh see corruption.

Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2
