Petula Clark could remake her famous song "Downtown" as "Confession" for Bergoglio.
Ping
It depends on the definition of “central,” doesn’t it? After this, will he get around to more pressing questions, like how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? This being an exercise in useless navel-gazing is probably the best it can be.
I had a silent chortle thinking about someone going to a traditional Catholic priest for confession- “I’m not really here to talk about my sins Father- Instead why don’t we talk about how lucky God is to have me worshiping him.”
“One does not go to confession as chastised people who must humble themselves”
Sins are not a matter of feeling “downcast”. Sins are objective realities. Mortal sins (do they even talk about this anymore) that we are conscious of need to be confessed by type and number. That’s the minimum requirement, along with contrition and purpose of amendment. There’s nothing about “feeling downcast” involved. That may be there of course, because serious sin can make us sad, but confession is not a mental health visit for depression.
This pope...almost every day a new confusing outburst.
Folks scoffed when the elderly commie Scalfari connected the dots and said that Bergoglio was seeking to abolish the concept of sin, but Scalfari’s analysis was correct.
Scalfari is an Atheist as well, is he not?
Yes, he is. And thus Scalfari understands Bergoglio’s mentality quite well.
Understood, though there was a time when saying that he’s a “commie” and an “atheist” would be redundant, as it was widely acknowledged that atheism is an integral component of Marxism-Leninism.
The only thing that requires confession is a mortal sin.
People who go regularly should confess other sins, because it gives you a chance to evaluate your behavior and stop something before it really gets a grip on you.
But it’s also not meant as psychological counseling for the worried well or the egomaniac self-obsessed fruit loops.
I’m in accord with the spirit of your comments, but also offer for your consideration these words from The Act of Contrition:
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you...
That's not true. I'm surprised you think that.
Check it out. Catholics only have to go to Confession once a year unless they have committed a mortal sin. It’s advised to go more often, of course, but it’s not for psychological counseling.
Suppose you don’t commit a mortal sin in a year’s time. What do you confess then?
I am beginning to REALLY think he might NEVER have been a CATHOLIC!!!
Depends on what your consider “psychological” but for certain things- like scrupulosity- confession is important (which is kind of ironic). The Church has always recommended once a month, most popes in the past have gone once a week.
However to your point, a big problem with many/most post Vatican II trained priests is that they feel they are both priest and psychologist. Many times the “psychology” training they have had is just enough to be dangerous. While there is definitely some overlap, there are also times when a priest should know when they’ve left the spiritual field and are more in psychological/medical territory. I would opine that the responsibility for that should be on the supposedly trained priest rather than the average laymen.
The venial sins. The Church requires you to go to Confession once a year, before Easter.
You can obviously go more often, and should, but if you commit a mortal sin you should go immediately. If you’re a once a year person who has not committed a mortal sin, you just confess the rest of the stuff….which can still be bad but is not lethal.
You should confess all your venial and mortal sins at each confession.
