Not sure what you mean, but documents haven’t been used for generations. Past family practice is relied upon. If some recall your paternal g-grandfather acting as a Kohen, or it is noted on a paternal ancestor’s grave, you are treated as a Kohen. The Messiah will sort out errors.
For redemption of the firstborn, some religious Jews use the practice of redemption from three different families thought to be Kohanim, on the odds that at least one will be an actual Kohen.
