One can hardly improve on Newman--his prayer has a number of elements from the Requiem Mass and the burial service.

We're on the list.

Dr Steve - Excerpts from the Litany of the Saints that I find appropriate:

We sinners, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would spare us, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would pardon us, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would bring us to true penance, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would deign to govern and preserve your holy Church, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would deign to call back to the unity of the Church all who have strayed from the truth and lead all unbelievers to the light of the Gospel, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would deign to confirm and preserve us in your holy service, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would lift up our minds to heavenly desires, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would render eternal blessings to all our benefactors, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would deliver our souls and the souls of our brethren, relations and benefactors, from eternal damnation, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would deign to grant eternal rest to all the faithful departed, We beseech you, hear us.
That you would deign graciously to hear us, We beseech you, hear us.
Son of God, We beseech you, hear us.

O Lord, deal not with us according to our sins. Neither requite us according to our iniquities.

Let us pray. O God, whose property is always to have mercy and to spare, receive our petition, that we, and all your servants who are bound by the chains of sin, may, by the compassion of your goodness, be mercifully absolved.

Graciously hear, we beg you, O Lord, the prayers of your suppliants, and pardon the sins of those who confess to you, that in your bounty you may grant us both pardon and peace.

In your clemency, O Lord, show us your ineffable mercy, that you may both free us from all our sins, and deliver us from the punishments which we deserve for them.

O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of your servants and handmaids the remission of all their sins, that, through devout prayers, they may obtain the pardon which they always desired.

Almighty and everlasting God, you have dominion over the living and the dead, and you are merciful to all who you foreknow will be yours by faith and good works; we humbly beg you that those for whom we intend to pour forth our prayers, whether this present world still detain them in the flesh, or the world to come has already received them out of their bodies, may, through the intercession of all Saints, by the clemency of your goodness, obtain the remission of all their sins. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

And a few other prayers:

Go forth, Christian soul, from this world
in the name of God the almighty Father, who created you,
in the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who suffered for you,
in the name of the Holy Spirit, who was poured out upon you,
May you live in peace this day,
May your home be with God in Zion,
With Mary, the virgin Mother of God,
With Joseph and all the angels and saints.

In paradisum deducant te angeli,
in tuo adventu suscipiuant te martyres.
Chorus angelorum te suscipiat,
et com Lazaro quondam paupere
aeternam habeas requiem.

Out of the depths I have cried to you O Lord: Lord hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
If you, O Lord, shall observe iniquities, Lord, who shall endure it?
For with you there is merciful forgiveness: and by reason of your law, I have waited for you O Lord.
My soul has relied on his word; my soul has hoped in the Lord.
from the morning watch even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.
Because with the Lord there is mercy, and with him, plentiful redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Eternal rest grant to him O Lord.
And may perpetual light shine upon him.

May he rest in peace.
Amen.

In many ways his life was tragic. Nevertheless, he had a family who loved him.

I'm sorry for his tragic end and for your families pain.

May God grant him rest among the saints, where there is no more pain, sorrow, or suffering.

Steve,

As you deal with the family and friends who are arriving to attend a funeral, I pray for you and for all who will be with you. What you wrote about your b.i.l. could be said about my own brother. When I have grappled with recent deaths, I have been reminded of the shortest verse - "Jesus wept". Jesus himself felt grief and anguish and He knew that it is painful and tragic. May you be able to hold out His Cross to those who need to believe upon Him for eternal life.

Brother Steve :

May you and yours take comfort in the Holy Word of G-d :

2 Corinthians 5:1 Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed,
we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
2 Corinthians 5:2 Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling,
2 Corinthians 5:3 because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.
2 Corinthians 5:4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened,
because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed
with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
2 Corinthians 5:5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has
given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
2 Corinthians 5:6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as
we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:7 We live by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from
the body and at home with the Lord.

Your Loving Brother in the Christ,

When my grandmother passed away, this was a great comfort to me. I pray that it--and more importantly--God's love, is a comfort to you and your family, Steve.

Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

Prayers for your family at this difficult time.

The prayers and readings that have been offered and prayed as I read them are beautifully appropriate.

I know the feelings you are having as well, as my beloved brother Dan, lived much the same way and "seemed" to enter Eternity without God's Hand ... but the other thing that I realized at that time (three days short of a year ago) was that Dan, my brother, did hear and understand all of my words and those around him ... while other members of the family acted and treated him as if he was gone ... I was gifted by his final smile in direct response to words I spoke to him!

Again thanks for your kind sentiments and prayers.

My brother-in-law gave instructions that absolutely no memorial service be held after his death. The family has honored his request. It is strange to have a death and no funeral. Very sad.

--

One of my spiritual heroes is George Whitefield, who was often criticised. On his tombstone are these simple words...

"Here lies G.W., what sort of man he was that Great Day will reveal."

I have often thought, if God were to write my epitaph, what would He say? What would I want Him to say? Perhaps...

"He entered heaven by the grace of God, clothed in the righteousness of Christ."

I read somewhere that it is becoming more common in Europe to have no funeral, no memorial service. How sad. May he rest in peace.
