Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune
(1867 - 1942)

Thirteenth Commandant
of the Marine Corps
1 July 1920 - 4 March 1929

.

Lieutenant General John Archer Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, was born at Pointe Coupee, Louisiana, on January 10, 1867. He was educated at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, from which he graduated with a B.A. degree. Subsequently, he secured an appointment as a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he was graduated in 1888. At the expiration of a two-year cruise as a cadet midshipman he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps on July 1, 1890.

Second Lieutenant Lejeune reported for duty on August 31, 1890 at the Marine Barracks, New York, serving at that post until he was detached, joining Marine Barracks, Norfolk, Virginia, on November 3, 1890. From October 1, 1891 to July 28, 1893, Lt Lejeune served on board the USS Bennington and was promoted to first lieutenant on February 26, 1892. On August 28, 1893, he reported for duty at the Norfolk Barracks, where he served until July 31, 1897.

On August 2, 1897, 1stLt Lejeune assumed command of the Marine Guard of the USS Cincinnati, on which vessel he served throughout the Spanish-American War. He was detached from the USS Cincinnati February 17, 1899, and on February 18, 1899, joined the USS Massachusetts, to command the Marine Guard. He was promoted to captain on March 3, 1899 and left his position on the Massachusetts on May 10, 1900.

From July 3, 1900 to November 12, 1900, Capt Lejeune performed recruiting duty at Boston, Massachusetts, and on November 22, 1900 reported at the Marine Barracks, Pensacola, Florida, to command the Marines. From January 12, 1903 to January 21, 1903, Capt Lejeune was on duty at the Norfolk Barracks, going to recruiting duty at New York City on January 26, 1903. He was promoted to major on March 3, 1903 and was on duty at Headquarters, Washington, D.C. from May 15, 1903 to August 8, 1903.

On August 8, 1903, Maj Lejeune was ordered to the USS Panther to command the Marine Battalion on board that vessel, joining August 16, 1903. On October 23, 1903, the battalion, with Maj Lejeune in command, was transferred to the USS Dixie. From December 16, 1903 to December 21, 1904, Maj Lejeune was on duty ashore on the Isthmus of Panama in command of this battalion, leaving there on the latter date on board the USS Yankee.

The portrait, by Joseph Cummings, depicts Lejeune during World War I. Lejeune served as VMI's fifth Superintendent, from 1929-1937.

From January 27, 1905 to May 20, 1906, Maj Lejeune served at the Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. He then returned to Panama in command of a battalion of Marines from May 29 to July 6, 1906, the battalion being transported both ways on board the USS Columbia. This was detached duty, and on March 29, 1907, Maj Lejeune was detached from command of the Washington Barracks and ordered to the Philippines.

Arriving in the Philippines on May 2, 1907, Maj Lejeune assumed command of the Marine Barracks and Naval Prison, Navy Yard, Cavite, on May 6, 1907. He assumed commanded of the First Brigade of Marines on June 15, 1908 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 13, 1909. He was detached on June 8, 1909 and ordered to return to the United States.

Lieutenant Colonel Lejeune embarked on board the USS Ohio on May 26, 1912 with the Second Regiment, First Provisional Brigade Marines for Cuba. He disembarked at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on June 8, 1912 and was in command of the District of Santiago from June 9 to July 14, 1912. On July 15, 1912, LtCol Lejeune embarked on board the USS Prairie and sailed for Colon, Panama. July 18-29, 1912 was spent at Camp Elliott, Panama.

After returning to the United States, LtCol Lejeune was again called upon for expeditionary duty. He sailed from Philadelphia, February 20, 1913 as second in command of the First Regiment, Second Provisional Brigade Marines and disembarked February 27, 1913, at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He returned to Philadelphia on board the USS Prairie on May 2, 1913.

On November 27, 1913, he sailed from New York with the 2d Advanced Base Regiment, his ultimate destination Vera Cruz, Mexico, but returned to the United States to receive his promotion to colonel on February 25, 1914. Col Lejeune and his unit eventually landed in Mexico on April 22, 1914 and participated in the occupation of the city. He returned home in December 1914, this time to report to Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C., to become assistant to the Major General Commandant of the Marine Corps. He was promoted to brigadier general on August 29, 1916.

With the outbreak of World War I, BGen Lejeune assumed command of the newly constructed Marine Barracks, Quantico, Virginia. His overseas service was, however, inevitable, and in June 1918, he arrived at Brest, France. He was promoted to major general July 1, 1918.

"This photo was taken just before the Second Division started its parade up Fifth Avenue from Washington Arch to the Northern boundary of Central Park in August 1919. John A. Lejeune, Major General USMC, then commanding Second Division, A.E.F.; Superintendent VMI."

Upon reporting to the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces, he was assigned to command a brigade of the 32nd Division and assumed command of the 4th Brigade of Marines of the 2d Division immediately following the attack of the division in the Soissons offensive.

On July 28, 1918, MajGen Lejeune assumed command of the 2d Division and remained in that capacity until August 1919, when the unit was demobilized. He was the first Marine officer to hold an Army divisional command, and following the Armistice he led his division in the march into Germany.

During that war he was recognized by the French Government as a strategist and leader, as evidenced by the Legion of Honor, and the Croix de Guerre bestowed upon him by that people. From General John J. Pershing he received the Distinguished Service Medal. The Navy Distinguished Service Medal was conferred upon him when he returned to the United States following the occupation of Germany.

In October 1919, he again was appointed Commanding General, Marine Barracks, Quantico, Virginia. He was appointed as Major General Commandant of the Marine Corps on July 1, 1920. Subsequent to that time, he left his headquarters at Washington several times for tours of inspection in Haiti, Santo Domingo, Cuba, Puerto Rico, to the West Coast and elsewhere.

Upon the expiration of his second term as Commandant, MajGen Lejeune indicated his desire not to retire from the Marine Corps, but was relieved as Commandant in March 1929. On November 10, 1929, he retired in order to accept the position of superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute, serving there until poor health necessitated his resignation in October 1937. In February 1942, he was advanced to the rank of lieutenant general on the Marine Corps retired list.

Lieutenant General Lejeune died November 20, 1942 at the Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland, and was interred in the Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Today, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, bears his name and he is often referred to as "the greatest of all Leathernecks," having served more than 40 years with the Marine Corps.

Lieutenant General Lejeune's awards include: Distinguished Service Medal (Navy); Distinguished Service Medal (Army); Sampson Medal (USS Cincinnati); Spanish Campaign Medal; Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal with three Bronze stars for Panama, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic; Mexican Service Medal; Victory Medal with St. Mihiel Champagne, Meuse-Argonne, and Defensive Sector Clasp for World War I; Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal; French Legion of Honor (Commander); and French Croix de Guerre with Palm.

Marine Corps Birthday:

All U.S. Marines are gung-ho. But, few can match the vision and total commitment of the famous 13th Commandant, Gen. John A. Lejeune. In 1921 he issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921.

Gen. Lejeune's order summarized the history, mission, and tradition of the Corps. It further directed that the order be read to all Marines on 10 November of each year to honor the founding of the Marine Corps. Thereafter, 10 November became a unique day for U.S. Marines throughout the world.

Soon, some Marine commands began to not only honor the birthday, but celebrate it. In 1923 the Marine Barracks at Ft. Mifflin, Pennsylvania, staged a formal dance. The Marines at the Washington Navy Yard arranged a mock battle on the parade ground. At Quantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Marine baseball team played a Cuban team and won, 9 to 8.

Color Portrait of General John Archer Lejeune, VMI Superintendent from 1929-1937. The original portrait is owned by VMI and located in the Turman Room, Preston Library.

The first "formal" Birthday Ball took place on Philadelphia in 1925. First class Marine Corps style, all the way! Guests included the Commandant, the Secretary of War (in 1925 the term "politically correct" didn't exist; it was Secretary of War, not Secretary of Defense), and a host of statesmen and elected officials. Prior to the Ball, Gen. Lejeune unveiled a memorial plaque at Tun Tavern. Then the entourage headed for the Benjamin Franklin Hotel and an evening of festivities and frolicking.

Over the years the annual Birthday Ball grew and grew, taking on a life of its own. In 1952 the Commandant, Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr., formalized the cake-cutting ceremony and other traditional observances. For example, Marine Corps policy now mandates that the first piece of cake must be presented to the oldest U.S. Marine present. The second piece goes to the youngest Marine. Among the many such mandates is a solemn reading of the Commandant's birthday message to the Corps.

Chief Warrant Officer Daryl Parker reads the 1921 birthday message from Gen. John A. Lejeune, 13th commandant of the Marine Corps, at Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion's Marine Corps Birthday Ball. The event was held Saturday in Linthicum, Md. In the background are, from left, Sgt. Laurence Pates and Cpl. Danielle Wilson.

Like the U.S. Marine Corps itself, the annual Birthday Ball has evolved from simple origins to the polished and professional functions of today. Nonetheless, one thing remains constant, the tenth day of November! This unique holiday for warriors is a day of camaraderie, a day to honor Corps and Country. Throughout the world on 10 November, U.S. Marines celebrate the birth of their Corps -- the most loyal, most feared, most revered, and most professional fighting force the world has ever known.

General John A. Lejeune's Birthday Message (1921)

Flag of the Commandant of the Marine Corps

759. The following will be read to the command on the 10th of November, 1921, and hereafter on the 10th of November of every year. Should the order not be received by the 10th of November, 1921, it will be read upon receipt.

On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress. Since that date, many thousand men have borne the name Marine. In memory of them, it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the Birthday of our Corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.

The record of our Corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world's history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence, the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation's foes. From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war and in the long era of tranquility at home. Generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres and in every corner of the seven seas [so] that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security.

The statue was unveiled on the of the Marine Corps 225th Birthday, honoring Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune, the 13th Commandant of the Corps.

In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our Corps, Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term "Marine" has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.

This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who preceded us in the Corps. With it we also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our Corps from generation to generation and has been the distinguishing mark of the Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish, Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the men of our Nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as "Soldiers of the Sea" since the founding of the Corps.

Veterans for Constitution Restoration is a non-profit, non-partisan educational and grassroots activist organization. The primary area of concern to all VetsCoR members is that our national and local educational systems fall short in teaching students and all American citizens the history and underlying principles on which our Constitutional republic-based system of self-government was founded. VetsCoR members are also very concerned that the Federal government long ago over-stepped its limited authority as clearly specified in the United States Constitution, as well as the Founding Fathers' supporting letters, essays, and other public documents.

Good morning to all at the Foxhole!

This thread brings back memories. I lived at Camp LeJeune with my first hubby and it's cool to learn something about the man it was named after.

To all our military men and women, past and present,
THANK YOU for serving the USA!

Thanks Sam for this profile of Lejeune. He looks quite sharp in his uniform getting ready for the parade. I see to he commanded troops in Vera Cruz. Until we profiled the Vera Cruz battle I had no idea about it. Now it seems every Navy or Marine piece we read mentions it! ;-)

1964 LBJ asks for a War on Poverty

All American taxpayers become casualties, and the war goes on with no changes in the Front Lines.

It appears that so far that poverty is winning.

A good definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expect a different result.

Kind of makes you wonder, what horrible, unmentionable sin did the 2ndID do that they would put a marine in charge of them. Maybe the 2ndID's honor guard mooned the first lady or something during a parade.

Pershing probably wanted to bring a little tone to the organization. Shows he had good taste for an Army guy. After all, the Corps is NAVY infantry!

Actually I am not all that good at this level of discourse, of repartee, since some of the best men ever have been Army. Some of them have even been intelligent!
