I died

... at Bunker Hill. Grapeshot tore through my body at New Orleans. Crushing hooves with riders as swirls of blue and grey ... and red ... crashed down upon me in strange-sounding places like Chickamauga, Antietam, and Shiloh.

The heat and swamp sucked at my last moments in the wilds of Cuba. A green fog of poisonous gas slithered over the side and into my trench, where water stood mixed with slime and blood

I lay face down in fetid pools clogged with jungle vines, felt the hot sands of Africa burning through my back, lay with cold cheek against wet beach sand and fell from gingerbread doorways into cobblestone streets. I gasped for air and breathed fire and oily water.

Snow clung to my lashes and ice formed at the corners of my mouth as a tiny wisp of steam wafted from the crimson flow of life out of my ears and stomach.

As I fell forward, I felt the jagged pain of bamboo beneath the water tearing at my flesh.

I fought and died when I didn't know why. I was killed before I was old enough to vote. I never knew the pleasure of savoring the memories that come with old age. I left mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, children and sweethearts to weep after me. I lay where names and landscapes and faces were all foreign to me. To this day, no one knows where the earth swallowed me.

I was called wop, nigger, dago, spic, kike, honky, and mic. I was tall and short and thin and heavy and young and old and cheerful and sad. I was a shop steward, an insurance agent, a writer, an orange picker, and the head of a grocery chain stretching from Baltimore to St. Louis.

I lived around the corner, up the street, next door, over the garage, across the tracks, on the hill and out of a suitcase. I came from a family farm, college campus, factory, new-car agency, and Broadway.

I died that we would remain free, that liberty would not perish, that women and children would be safe from terror, that my home would be protected, that an idea would be proven right, that my friend might live, that people back home could make overtime in the plants, and that a sagging economy might be helped.

Sometimes I served my country, sometimes my ideals and sometimes my own ego.

But I served.

On Veteran's Day, I hope you pause for a few moments to think on these things. You are still free to think ... and speak ... and publish whatever you wish because I gave the most I had ... my all.

Some of you have known some of my pain, my tears, and the sickness of soul for the waste of human life.

Yet, the giving of my life was not wasted. For perhaps somehow, in some way, people will do something to end my dying.

My death has extended the time given you to do that something.

After the next war there may be no one left to honor the dead.

Been talking to Foxhole people, got me thinking about why I have such strong emotions tied to long ago events. Shucks, I can't even remember any details any more, just a few mental images, some sounds, smells.

I don't know why I have such strong feelings. Except for one thing, maybe. One thing made up of parts.

I learned the Time, Newsweek, the TV networks, that whole bunch, were so far off in their reporting that it was as if they were horribly insane.

I learned that a tremendous number of Americans were fools. Often stupid fools.

I learned that there was indeed a very large Leninist Left here in the States, truly evil people, totally needing to be neutralized permanently and at any cost. Even at the cost of what is left of Constitutional Government.

The enemy was here, just as much as the enemy was in Viet Nam, and much more dangerous. We had been killing the wrong people.

I found that almost all people had a cow like acceptance of Red intellectual, moral, and emotional poison, the drumbeat of ideas, concepts, world view all intended to enslave everyone and their children forever. Like Orwell had O'Brien telling Winston Smith, "The future is a boot standing on the human face", or words to that effect. And nobody cared. Or even noticed. Living in a dream world.

Anyway, a very disturbing realization. Still horrible. A heck of a lot of very good guys were maimed or died.

SECONDHAND FAT KILLS!
. . . It's more deadly than smoke

THERE'S something even deadlier in the air than secondhand smoke -- it's secondhand fat, says a top researcher.

For years, doctors have been baffled by the high number of heart attack deaths of extremely skinny people, who were married to fatties or living with whale-size family members.

Some theorized that they just might be getting clogged arteries because they adopted the same poor eating habits of their obese spouses or housemates.

But now, Dr. Benjamin Myers, an obesity specialist in Bristol, Conn., says that invisible particles of fat detach themselves from obese people and are breathed in by those around them.

"I believe that fatties exude teensy-weensy bits of fat into the air which is picked up by those around them and can actually affect them in a negative way," explains Myers. "It seems that thin people are especially susceptible to this secondhand fat and, before you know it they keel over from a clogged artery even if they've been eating nothing but rabbit food all their lives.

"I can't tell you how many cases I've seen of a Jack Spratt, who's eaten no fat for 40 years, suddenly keel over with a heart attack. Meanwhile, his whalesized wife, who has been pigging out on fat-filled foods, keeps wallowing along."

Ironically, Myers is slated to be an expert witness at an upcoming Pennsylvania murder trial, in which an obese diet-cheating husband is accused of slaying his reed-thin wife with secondhand fat.

"Every night, as he crammed chocolate cake and cookies into his puss, his wife would nag him, 'Look at you, you are going to kill yourself,'" says Myers. "Little did she know that he was out to kill HER!"

Another expert, diet guru Dr. Sidney Blylock of Galveston, Texas, believes that secondhand fat may also be the reason that many diets fail.

"You can't believe the number of dieters nationwide who swear on a stack of Bibles that they haven't cheated on their diets even though they're gaining weight -- well, they're not all liars," says Blylock. "A dieter goes out to a nice restaurant, orders a salad or maybe a sliver of fish -- and gains 3 pounds because the guy at the next table was packing in calorie-crammed desserts and pastas like there's no tomorrow."

The doctors believe secondhand fat is a deadly menace and people should be wary of it while in public.

"People should take a good look around them," warns Myers. "Instead of worrying about that cigarette someone at the next table may be holding in their fingers, they should be more concerned of invisible fat globules released in the air by the roly-poly woman gorging herself at a nearby table."

Perhaps we are the ones in a dream world. Hoping America would wake up, find it's roots again, take back our freedom. Maybe we're just a bunch of old coots dreaming of what could have been. It's been my belief for some time that we are so far gone there is no turning back, no chance of recovery.

I have a little world I'm trying to maintain in a big world trying to destroy me. From sea to shining sea. When the time comes, if it comes, for taking back our country from our own government and from foreign governments (U.N.) I just hope there are enough right minded folks around to do the job.
