Rising Tide: The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines that Fought the Cold War
Gary Weir

Description: During the Cold War, the decision to release nuclear weapons was not left up to the political leaders of each country, but ultimately up to those in charge of the weapons. In the case of the Soviets, this decision was left for the commanders of the Soviet nuclear-armed submarines, engaged in a constant back and forth with their American counterparts. Author Gary Weir tells the story of these Soviet commanders in his new book, "Rising Tide: The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines that Fought the Cold War." The book includes stories of top-secret Soviet exercises off the Atlantic coast as well as debris-collection missions after U.S. weapons tests off the coast of Florida.

Author Bio: Gary Weir is the author of numerous books including "Forged in War: The Naval-Industrial Complex and Submarine Construction, 1940-1961." He is a leading expert on submarines and a historian of science and technology at the U.S. Naval Historical Center and an adjunct history professor at the University of Maryland.

Battle of Manila is underapriciated. City fighting is a sobering thought, hey?
