Hubby has mentioned that he would like a regular flagpole. That might make a nice Spring project. Hubby is in charge of bolts, screws, and digging holes, so it's up to him. :^)

0003 (BC) According to early Christian theologian Clement of Alexandria (ca.155_ca.220 AD), Jesus Christ was born on this date.
1758 English churchman Philip Embury, 30, married Margaret Switzer. Afterward immigrating to America, Embury was later encouraged by his cousin Barbara Heck to found a Methodist society in New York City in 1768. Embury thus became the first Methodist preacher in North America.
1775 Anglican hymnwriter John Newton wrote in a letter: 'Rational assent may be the act of our natural reason; faith is the effect of immediate almighty power.'
1876 English_born Rodney ("Gipsy") Smith, 16, was converted to a living faith. Smith later became an English Wesleyan singing evangelist whose preaching emphasized the love of God.

Walmart fails to ban office romance

Wal-Mart has lost a court appeal to try to legally ban its employees in Germany from having office romances.
The regional industrial tribunal in Dusseldorf upheld an earlier verdict by the local Wuppertal industrial tribunal that the company's "ethics rules" were in breach of German law.

Wal-mart tried to introduce a 28-page ethical code that forbids "lustful glances and ambiguous jokes" as well as "sexually meaningful communication of any type".
And it said: "You may not go out with or have a relationship with someone who could influence your employment situation or whose employment situation you could influence."
Wal-Mart also required its 10,500 German employees to report violations of the code, including alcohol and drug use, to a telephone hotline - a move also banned by the courts.

According to the tribunal, rules that govern personal relationships, though common in the US, are incompatible with German labour laws and agreement with the regional labour council would be necessary to implement them.
Wal-Mart management defended the disputed passages, saying they were only trying to protect their employees from sexual harassment.

Wal-Mart still has one more chance to appeal the verdict at the Federal Labour Court in Erfurt.

1968 Heidi bowl-NBC misses Oakland's rally to beat Jets, 43-32

One of the most exciting finishes in sports history was not seen on television. This football game became known as the Heidi Bowl (or Heidi Game). On November 17, 1968, the New York Jets led the Oakland Raiders 32-29, with 50 seconds to go. It was the end of the hour, and even though the score was close, NBC switched over to the movie Heidi. In the next 42 seconds, Oakland scored two touchdowns to win 43-32.

Religious History
1095 Pope Urban II opened the Council of Clermont. Summoned to plan the First Crusade, it was attended by over 200 bishops. Among its official policies, the Council decreed that a pilgrimage to Jerusalem made every other penance superfluous.
1302 Pope Boniface VIII published the bull "Unam Sanctam." It was the first papal writing to decree that spiritual power took precedent over temporal power, and that subjection to the pope was necessary to salvation.
1626 In Rome, the newly completed St Peter's Basilica was consecrated by Urban VIII. St. Peter's is presently the largest church in Christendom, with a length of 619 feet.
1866 English devotional writer Katherine Hankey, 32, penned the verses that we sing today as the hymn, "I Love to Tell the Story."
1966 This was the last required meatless Friday for American Roman Catholics, in accordance with a decree made by Pope Paul VI earlier this year.

Police? My onion rings are cold!'

A US woman was arrested for calling 911 after a restaurant served her cold onion rings.
Sharita Williams, 30, of Houma, Louisiana, told police the food was cold when she received it and the waiter refused to replace it.

So she dialled 911 from the Malt-N-Burger restaurant in Thibodaux, reports the Daily Comet.
Police turned up - but only to arrest Williams for wasting police time. She is due in court in December.

A World In Labor

The whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. —Romans 8:22

Every now and then the earth lets out a moan. Sometimes it's more of a scream, like a mother giving birth.

The apostle Paul said that "the whole creation groans and labors" (Romans 8:22). These groans often take the form of earthquakes, landslides, hurricanes, or tsunamis.

A song by Sarah McLachlan speaks to this instability and the often tragic results of such geologic flailing. Called "World On Fire," one verse describes dealing with tragedy this way:

"I watch the heavens and I find a calling; something I can do to change this moment. Stay close to me while the sky is falling; don't want to be left alone."

We aren't alone in longing for Jesus, our Savior, to return. As we wait, He is our constant companion. Like the earth, we rant and rave for God to make things right. We as His followers are called to wait "with perseverance" (v.25) in spite of our earthly uncertainties. Someday all of creation "will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God" (v.21).

Jesus said that He would be with us always, "even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20). And we can trust Him to keep His word. —Dale Beaver
