Lord,

Keep our Troops forever in Your care

Give them victory over the enemy...

Grant them a safe and swift return...

Bless those who mourn the lost.
.

FReepers from the Foxhole join in prayer
for all those serving their country at this time.

...................................................................................... ...........................................

U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues

Where Duty, Honor and Country
are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.

Our Mission:

The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans.

In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support.

The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer.

If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions.

We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

Georgia on our mind

So here we are, in the Deep South, Ochlocknee, Georgia...almost.

We aren't in any city, but Ochlocknee is our post office. It's a short pleasant 10 mile country drive to the grocery and the town of Thomasville.

We like it out here in the country and this time we plan to stay put for a while, Lord willing and the creek don't rise or the saints... and all that.

Direct TV isn't bad at all, although admittedly we rarely watch tv.

Dial-up internet is painfully slow.

The dogs are good. We have a decent amount of yard fenced off for them with a temporary farm fence. Miss Scarlett loves to chase the bugs out here and on the land behind us lives a young female "Sarge look-alike" named Miss Tilley.

Sarge just sits and pines away for her. I'm pretty sure she thinks he's a handsome fella.

Sarge, flirting with Miss Tilley

We have poisonous toads here and we have to watch the dogs carefully at dawn and dusk. They think it's fun to play with the toads.

Miss feather, we have lots of dragonflies, they like to tease the dogs. It's like they know the dogs can't catch them.

We have all kinds of birds, Sam saw a pileated woodpecker a couple days ago, I'm jealous!. We have blue jays and cardinals, warblers and finches and a few different woodpeckers. Roosters crow in the early morning and the woods yield lots of strange sounds at night.

The sky is quite beautiful out here, you can see more than you can in the cities and suburbs. It's like camping out only with a house instead of a tent.

Oh yeah, somewhere between Oregon, North Carolina and Georgia, we got married to each other...in Florida. :-)

We can open burn out here. (note to samwise: with permits!)

The past two Saturdays we spent the entire day watching our burn pile burn. Sam has done such a fine job of clearing the land that we have plenty more to burn when the days are good for it. It's a great way to relax.

Gnats, they are horrible at certain times of the day. The road system is good and the people in the nearby towns are what we find here typically, nice southern polite folks.

We're mostly settled in and hopefully a time will come when we will be able to fence the entire acre in and the dogs can have free roam of the place, that'll be nice.

We wish we could be online more but there is a lot to do and I'm away about 11 hours a day during the week commuting to Tallahassee and Sam is always busy with the chores. And did I mention, dial-up is awful?

All in all, we're blessed and truly enjoying ourselves, the house, the dogs and the area. Now that the humidity of summer is over the weather is quite pleasant.

I'd love to share more pictures with you but in case you missed it, dial-up is awful to work with and we can only be on-line one computer at a time.

Thanks w_over_w. Getting used to people being polite all the time, it's sorta nice. :-)

Dang it! I read the thread; I just missed it.

You try reading with teenagers running around and see if you don't miss something. LOL

By the way - if you haven't gotten there yet, Andersonville is a nice day trip from where you are. The Confederate Naval Museum in Columbus would be a somewhat harder day trip. Savannah, Darien, Brunswick and St. Augustine would be more likely weekends. On a wildlife note, the Okefenokee swamp tour at Waycross is worth the trip, and I think there are supposed to be some bald eagles along the Flint.

and now with dial up finishing it could get unpleasant.

Don't they have public access computers at the Thomas County library (at least at the Thomasville location) you could use? Or has city life spoiled me?

We want to go to the 8th Air Force Museum in Savannah, it looks really interesting, we've passed Andersonville site a few times in our travels between GA and NC.

That may be worth checking out. (They probably use dialup too, LOL)

The Empathy Factor

READ: Hebrews 4:14-16

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. —John 1:14

In the summer of 2005, I led a group of high school students on a missions trip to Jamaica. Our goal was to build a playground at a school for deaf children in that beautiful island country.

Many of our students had previously visited the school and played with the kids. But one of our teenagers had a special connection to the Jamaican children. Chelsea too grew up in a world of quiet. Deaf since birth, she didn't hear a sound until she was 11, when she received a cochlear implant. Now able to hear about 30 percent of the sounds around her, Chelsea understood the deaf in ways our other students could not. She had true empathy.

Empathy is a strong emotion. It can drive us to come alongside those who are in similar situations. It can cause us to care in a deeper way for those with whom we share a concern or a difficulty.

The most important example of empathy is the Lord Himself. He became one of us (John 1:14). Because He did, He understands our struggles and weaknesses (Heb. 4:15). Jesus knows what we are going through, for He endured this life Himself. As we receive His grace in our time of need, we are better able to come alongside others. Dave Branon

God lived as man, as one of us,
And understands our need for grace;
He is not distant nor detached
From all the trials that we face.  —Sper

No one understands like Jesus.

Congratulations, Sam and Snip! May you have great joy and happiness in your new life together and new home!

You mentioned "poisonous toads" and I thought you'd picked up stakes and moved again - to Washington D.C.!

Thanks for the update. Dial-up does suck - so we appreciate the effort!

Tapping The Treasure

READ: Psalm 119:14-24

Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law. —Psalm 119:18

Stephen May discovered a treasure while teaching literature at the University of Northern Colorado. In the library, he found 150 boxes of letters, manuscripts, journals, outlines, and notes given to the school by James A. Michener.

Surprisingly, no one was using those materials to write a biography of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, known for his historical novels. After years of research and writing, May produced a new account of the life of Michener from that great treasure.

Each day, you and I are writing the story of our lives by what we say and do. Are we using the great, but often neglected, wealth of the Bible? The psalmist wrote: "I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as much as in all riches. . . . Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law" (Ps. 119:14,18).

The Bible is the written record through which we get to know Jesus Christ, "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Col. 2:3). Its nuggets of truth are available to us all.

A life well-lived is directly related to a Bible well-read. As we live out our life story, let's be sure to tap the treasure of God's Word every day. David C. McCasland

My Bible to me is a treasure house,
Where I can always find
Whatever I need from day to day
For heart and soul and mind.  —Anon.

The Bible's treasures are found by those who dig for them.

LOL, I don't think the ones we have here are as bad as those in DC. :-)

Thanks for the well wishes.

Work is going good, but our finances are tighter than ever, and we struggle to make end meet each month.

But we're all healthy and both employed. :)

Thanks for asking.

We know that feeling. Only one of us working right now and it makes it tough.
