TRYING TO LOCATE "LOST" BOOK ON KOREAN WAR POWS
Paperback Book | 1959 | Unknown

Posted on 01/11/2007 10:17:27 AM PST by Dennis Paul Morony

This was a paperback book with the picture of a white POW on its cover. He has reddish-blond hair and with a desperate expression is staring out through coils of barbed wire in a Communist concentration camp in Korea.

TOPICS: VetsCoR
KEYWORDS: baptist; black; catholic; pows
Paraphrased from memory:

Communist interragators learned something interesting:

When American Catholic POWs showed up, breaking them was simple. You just tore off their medallions, scapulars, etc., and after spitting on what you tore off, you just stomped it into the mud. Period.

Black Southern Baptist POWS, by contrast, were Bad News. Not docile at all. They not only believed in God, they insisted on acting like it!

They were used to working hard and toughing it out. They already knew all about racial bigotry and class hatred.

They had a deep interior faith and abosolute conviction that Jesus Christ was their Lord and Savior, and didn't hesitate to throw all this in the Reds' faces.

They were everything the American Catholic Church COULD so easily have been, but wasn't.

In short, a great book!

But, man!

I've hit most all data bases I've been able to find online regarding list of books dealing with POWs and found NONE that matches.

So, thanks for any help, anyone can give me.

Dennis

Try looking here with a subject search for 'Korean War POW' Alibris.com It may take a while, but there is usually a picture of the cover, too (and where to buy, etc.) I have done business with them before and was quite satisfied.

I bet they were tough, but do you mean southern blacks, that were Baptist, instead of Southern Baptist blacks?

In one of my Korean War POW books it mentioned some foreign troops that ate grass etc. which gave them a head start on surviving over the more advanced soldiers.

Something it mentioned which I had not thought of before, was that the young soldiers starved before the older soldiers, the reason was that the young man's metabolism burnt his body up faster than the older men with their lower caloric needs.
