This video is in memory of sacrifices made aboard the Naval carrier USS Farrestal, CVA-59 on July 29, 1967 in North Vietnam Gulf of Tonkin, South China Sea, at or about 10:50 AM. The results of the disaster were, fatalities 134 and as many as 70 or more men wounded. The song in this video is sung by the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Down by the Riverside and color pictures are contributed by Bill Mason, PH2-US Navy. In the video is the actual voice of Captain John Beling, recorded during the beginning of the fires and disaster.

This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
I have watched “Trial by Fire”, a documentary about that very day, several times. The problem was that the Alpha fire fighting team was killed withing the first few minutes of fighting the fire and there was literally no one else who knew how to fight fires left on the ship. As a result, ALL naval personnel, from the lowest seaman to the captain of the ship goes through fire fighting training once a year when they are attached to a sea going squadron or a ship. That way you might not be the best trained firefighter, but you will know SOMETHING about firefighting.
BTW, the best way to combat a class D fire (burning metals) is to simply leave it alone and allow it to burn out, unless it is a flare on the flight deck that can be easily washed overboard with a high pressure hose.
Thanks you for commenting and God bless you.
I heard that all sailors are firefighters, just as all Marines are riflemen.
BTW = By the way. I was Navy also attached to VAQ-140 on the Kennedy.
