The left-leaning Mother Jones magazine's fascinating cover story this month profiles a growing militia-style group on the right called Oath Keepers. The twist is that Oathkeepers are largely active-duty members of the military who are preparing to disobey their Commander-in-Chief.
The story features Lee Pray (not his real last name), a private based at Fort Drum:
In Pray's estimate, it might not be long (months, perhaps a year) before President Obama finds some pretexta pandemic, a natural disaster, a terror attackto impose martial law, ban interstate travel, and begin detaining citizens en masse. One of his fellow Oath Keepers, a former infantryman, advised me to prepare a "bug out" bag with 39 items including gas masks, ammo, and water purification tablets, so that I'd be ready to go "when the shit hits the fan."
When it does, Pray and his buddies plan to go AWOL and make their way to their "fortified bunker"the home of one comrade's parents in rural Idahowhere they've stocked survival gear, generators, food, and weapons. If it becomes necessary, they say, they will turn those guns against their fellow soldiers.
As the article points out, the Oath Keepers are closely linked to civilian right-wing groups from the Tea Party to Birthers to 912ers.
Aside from the intra-military implications of rank-and-file troops vowing to disobey - and take arms against - their highest commander, here's what really interests me. If you read Oath Keepers' list of orders they will not obey, they're not much different from what a lot of people on the Left most feared during the Bush Administration.
Fort Drum folks out there: do you know any Oathkeepers? What do you think you've sworn an oath to - the Constitution? The Commander-in-Chief? Both? Are they vigilant, patriotic soldiers or a threat to chain of command so integral to a functioning military?
They are preparing to follow the constitution when the leadership tosses it away, if what I have read is correct.
For example, if an illegal order is given to round up civilians on the grounds of national security and place them in concentration camps, and you know that these people have done nothing, do you follow the orders or do you refuse what is an obviously illegal order?
We didn't let the Germans use the excuse that they were following orders, so do we thing that if our military is ever placed in the same situation, that they will be excused?
They may be acting sooner than they think. Good chance Zero is going to try to pull something before the elections in November so he can postpone them.
The rats know its going to be a disaster for them, so expect a disaster of some sort before the election.
NPR? Yawnnnnn...leftist propaganda.
This is North Country Public Radio propaganda, paid for by we the taxpayers.
Some people should always keep their head moving and eyes open, keep their doors and windows locked, sleep with one eye open and be vwery, vwery careful because some people may be hunting wabbits.
The Oathkeeprs follow the Constitution, NOT the CIC. With NPR who whine about everything that is the opposite of their messiah, it would not astound me that they have never even read the Constitution.
We pay for lots of prominent liars, these days, at all levels. Where is the Constitutional authorization to fund a radio network?
But the fact is that Obama is hanging onto his authority over the military by a thread. I do not know wnayone in the service who would follow his orders to take up arms against the citizenry.
If I'm correct enlisted swear to both and the officers above them.
Officers on the other hand swear only to the Constitution.
To quote Lee Ermy.
WHAT IS THAT! WTF is THAT!?
All he needs is one unit of true believers to enforce his personal instructions.
The key is, are any of them willing to go to prison to avoid taking up arms against American citizens? Are they willing to be arrested for disobeying an unlawful order?
What about the uncertain orders, such as when a unit is brought in from elsewhere to quell a “rebelliion” and only know what they are told, and cannot evaluate the situation on the ground?
When does a soldier know that he is no longer following the Constitution, and is following an unlawful order? No American citizen has standing to challenge even the authority of the President’s office thanks to several court rulings, so how successful will his defense be in military court?
Everyone should decide now what their personal code of honor is going to be when called to the front. May God bless all of them for wanting to do the right thing.
Not only that, but this is the most heavily armed citizenry in world history. If the Jews at Masada or the Warsaw ghettos had been half as well-armed as we are, both of those situations would’ve had distinctly different outcomes.
What Good Can a Handgun Do Against An Army?
>I understand your concerns,
>But the fact is that Obama is hanging onto his authority over the military by a thread.
If that thread is the Constitution, then he (and you) needn’t worry.
A reporter doing at story on ICBM launch Officers asked - “How could you live with yourself if you had to push the button?”
“I wouldn't” was the answer.
“How's that?” asked the reporter.
“For the President to order a nuke attack would be insane, and I'm not bound to follow the orders of an insane man.”
SAC was none too happy and interviewed a large number of the lynch Officers.
Quite a few were replaced when they gave answers along the same line.
Maybe some of the USAF pocket rocket types on the board can provide a set of dates....
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! Absolutely correct!
From military.com —
Federal law requires everyone who enlists or re-enlists in the Armed Forces of the United States to take the enlistment oath. The oath of enlistment into the United States Armed Forces is administered by any commissioned officer to any person enlisting or re-enlisting for a term of service into any branch of the military. The officer asks the person, or persons, to raise their right hand and repeat the oath after him. The oath is traditionally performed in front of the United States Flag and other flags, such as the state flag, military branch flag, and unit guidon may be present.
In the Armed Forces EXCEPT the National Guard (Army or Air)
I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
In the National Guard (Army or Air)
I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the State of (STATE NAME) against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the Governor of (STATE NAME) and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to law and regulations. So help me God.
I agree, but I don't think it will be this November; it will be before the 2012 Presidential election. This government is setting up a multimegaton financial bomb that is going to utterl shut down the country and plunge us into chaos, but the fuse on this bomb is longer than 8 months and he doesn't want to waste it on midterm election anyway.
No, when this money bomb goes off in 2012, he'll have all the pretense he needs to declare martial law and suspend the election.
I think paranoia, but I like that the libs are shaking a bit, They should be.
You know, not to be a snob or anything, but privates really don’t know very much. Whenever I see the first quote in a piece about the military is coming from a private, I close my left eye and scrunch my forehead a little.
Sorry. No sale on this story.
>>>No, when this money bomb goes off in 2012, he’ll have all the pretense he needs to declare martial law and suspend the election.
I fondly recall the crackpots going on how GWB under the spell of Dick Cheney would cancel elections. Then turn the Army, dripping with innocent Iraqi blood, loose on all blacks, homosexuals, and liberals and throw the survivors into FEMA gulags.
Similar I recall different crackpots going on and on about how Bill Clinton was going to mount a coup under cover of Y2K, cancel elections, and declare himself and Hillary co-president for life. Confiscate all the guns, swear fealty to the UN, and send all patriots to FEMA gulags.
And then I recall yet other crackpots going on how GHB would institute a New World Order by canceling elections. Then send all the patriots to FEMA gulags.
And now I guess it’s our turn again to fantasize about Obama suspending the elections and the FEMA gulags. But the elections won’t be suspended and the Army isn’t going to mutiny. And shame on people who think it would.
Call it related, the other side of the coin, or wtf.
Never heard of any such actor/ssgt....
Sounds like this Mother Jones needs to up the tinfoil hat orders.
The loons abound.
Actually, shame on people who have no knowlwdge of past history who say “it can’t happen here”.
If the presentation of facts and reason cause one to hyperventilate, I am not inclined toward concern.
I, (state your name), having been appointed a (rank) in the United States (branch of service), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the office upon which I am about to enter. So help me God.
That's the Oath I took and the one I will follow. An Oath is Forever.
I’m glad you posted that, because when my middle son swore his oath I did not recall hearing anything about the President, only the Constitution. I have it on video but I have put it ‘somewhere’ in my PC.
He’s in NROTC/ Marine track.
Plus the oath is to obey the orders of the President, not some ineligible usurper.
And who decides when an order is illegal or the order giver is a usurper?
Well basically, each person does. But they'd better be very certain of that decision. The penalty for deciding wrongly is severe.
He may not fulfill our worst fears, but this one *is* different.
Ole Billy Jeff was a draft dodger, and something of a peacenik, but given his later predilections, I suspect it was his way of meeting "hot chicks". The dodging was mostly cowardice, exhibited later by his inability to have OBL taken out.
