VFW’s Response to Blumenthal’s Press Conference

KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 18, 2010 - Mr. Blumenthal is not a member of the VFW and VFW National By-Laws do not allow any level of the organization to endorse political candidates.

VFW national did not sanction and was not, in fact, aware that the press conference was going to be held at a VFW Post. This decision was made at the Post level and the VFW Department of Connecticut issued the following:

The following statement is by Richard DiFederico, Department Commander Connecticut VFW:

“Those who served in Vietnam or offshore or in neighboring countries rightfully earned all the belated thanks and appreciation our nation can muster. Those who served in uniform during the Vietnam era also deserve our gratitude, which makes Mr. Blumenthal's claim to be something he is not so outrageous. It diminishes the service of all who served and sacrificed, most especially those whose names are inscribed on the Vietnam Wall. Mr. Blumenthal was considered one of the best friends a veteran could have in Connecticut. It is a true shame that he let a false claim of Vietnam service change that.”

VFW National Commander Thomas J. Tradewell Sr., endorses this statement. In sum, the fact that this event was held at a VFW location cannot, in any manner, be construed as a formal endorsement of the candidate.

Sounds like a post commander is about to get demoted.

A very well deserved demotion, I'd say. What could he have been thinking? (Assuming, of course, that he was thinking.) At a bare minimum, he should have ensured that the VFW logo on the lectern was covered when photos were taken.

And a well-deserved demotion it will be! The VFW is very strict in ensuring that membership is limited to veterans of FOREIGN wars. When I moved from Texas to Florida and stopped by the local VFW to change my membership, it took my DD214 proving my Vietnam service and several weeks to get the job done.

The scripted BlumenDodd pep rally took place at the West Hartford, CT VFW hall. One account I read claims the Mayor of West Hartford rented out the hall.

So the ‘pep rally’ and the ‘press conference’ were at the same place/date/time?

I refer to the press conference as a pep rally because BlumenDodd tried to make it appear as the VFW was rallying to his side. That alone couldn't have been more disingenuous.

That pep-rally I saw yesterday reminds me of scenes where politicians drag their wives out onto the stage while they admit to extramarital affairs.

Whomever it was was probably also one of the Firefighters for Kerry back in 2004. Some Union Goons fought in Vietnam, back in the day...

Did you hear Cavuto diminish the importance of what Blumenthal did? He played an excerpt of a speech in which Blumbenthal clearly stated that although he never served in Vietnam, he has empathy for those who did, etc. etc. Neil reminded his audience he didn’t steal, cheat and do what Rangel, Spitzer, and Dodd have done, almost making the listener feel sorry. What gives with FNC lately? Too much giving McCain a forum to campaign and now siding with Blumenthal?

StarFan, I'm SO glad you mentioned this! I heard the end of Cavuto's show today via XM Radio. Since I couldn't see Cavuto on TV, at first I thought maybe his weird comments were tongue in cheek. He kept going on and on, and seemed to be sincere in his defense of Blumenthal. I was aghast... almost drove off the road. What's up with Neil Cavuto???

Anybody else hear Cavuto's outrageous comments today?
