With the patriotic soldier and family in mind, planned activities include a Vietnam Wall traveling memorial, a wreath-laying ceremony, tributes to local Vietnam veterans and the nurses who served, and the rededication of a Vietnam War Memorial on Fort Bragg.
But as envisioned by [Fayetteville Mayor Tony] Chavonne and other organizers, the homecoming also will include perspectives from native Vietnamese, homeless Vietnam veterans and anti-war protesters.
"We're part of that story," said Chuck Fager, director of the Quaker House.
The day before the meeting, Fager said he was appreciative that Chavonne had extended an invitation to the Quaker House to be a part of the celebration. But Fager said he was in favor of being part of "a full-fledged conversation of the Vietnam War."
"Somebody has got to say, we did lose that war," he said Tuesday. "Whatever you think about it, that was a time of great upheaval in the country and at Fort Bragg. I've read that it was one of the darkest periods in history for the military - Vietnam and its aftermath. I know a lot of people don't like to be reminded about it. I don't know how we can be involved without telling those things."
During the meeting Wednesday, Fager presented a list of potential programs including discussions, educational presentations and a series of films that give a different viewpoint of Vietnam.
Two of the proposed films, the anti-war "Coming Home" and "FTA," feature actress Jane Fonda.

Trotting out the traitors of the era is not a tribute. It’s a mockery and a slap in the face. Any rational person can see that.
There’s nothing that can be said or done to ease the contempt that I have for the “anti-war activists” and the damage they did. Not just to our efforts, but to the morale and psyche of our troops.
One of my family members was stationed in Vietnam as a nurse anesthetist where he saw some of the most horrible injuries and worked to save the lives of anyone and everyone who was brought in, including enemy combatants.
On his return, he was stationed at Ft. Devens, MA. This is a GOOD man and for his service, he couldn’t venture off base in uniform without being confronted by and verbally attacked as a murderer and baby killer by those pukes.
A while back there was an article posted that tried to whitewash the activists’ history, saying that they never spat at or assaulted our troops on their return, that it’s a myth of the era. They. LIE.
On my second trip over, while riding in a Deuce and a Half heading back to An Khe, we came upon a Vietnamese truck that had over turned into a ravine with 3 Vietnamese in it.
We and another truck stopped, got out, pulled the injured out and called in Medevac to get them to a hospital, after administering what first aid we could to them.
None of us asked if they supported or opposed us, we just saw injured humans that needed help.
Th anti-war creeps never consider stories as that and they happened much more than told. All they want to talk about is My Lai.
Well, I guess a 10 day war beats a 10 year war hands down! Here’s hoping the Military wins this time too...but we all know, in the end the socialists get to ‘claim’ victory, since they own the media!
Mayor Chavonne now says no anti-war or Jane Fonda invited.
