On July 28, 1966, Ensign George P. McSwain, Jr. was flying an A4E Skyhawk in a strike mission near the city of Vinh, Nghe An Province, North Vietnam,
when his aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile (SAM).
McSwain successfully ejected and reached the ground safely, but rescue was not because of the hostile area in which he landed.
McSwain was captured by the North Vietnamese and for the next six and one-half years,
was a prisoner of war.
He was released in Operation Homecoming on March 4, 1973.
NOTE: Even though on page 30 of "Alpha Strike Vietnam" it is stated that McSwain was killed on this mission, he was a released POW. Probably
this information was given the author by a shipmate who had not learned McSwain had been captured.)

Thanks for the news, Snippy...I got to talk this weekend with a sailor who returned from Iraq a few weeks ago...he confirmed what I've been thinking about two kinds of news coming out of theater.

He said there's the CNN version, and then there's the truth.

I'll be visiting here all day, between breaks to get some work done!

Yes it is a great day to be alive Jinxy.

I agree also that the majority of our troops know the truth about our media and know they have support from the majority of their countrymen back home and to not believe what the liberal media is reporting.

Saturday continued;

After touring downtown we drove to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park.

The Oregon Living Vietnam Memorial, Oregon history timeline and names of Oregonians lost or missing throughout the Vietnam war are on sections of the Wall throughout the park

On top of the hill which we eventually climb in a spiral walk are Wall sections with names and dates and history. You can see two sections in this picture.

This last pic is the MIA section, we had pictures of every section but for whatever reason we lost some of the pictures during my vacation from the camera. :(

We then headed to the Test Rose Gardens. We crashed a wedding party and smelled lots of the flowers. Then SAM bought me the best snow cone I've ever had. The ice was like snow, not the hard chunks of ice you usually get in a snow cone. We both got cherry flavored, it hit the spot.

We headed for home, SAM cooked dinner and we sat out on the deck until dinner was served. We had a big meal of polish sausage and fresh vegetables, I cleaned one pan that couldn't go in the dishwasher and then the two of us went for a walk after dinner.

We walked down to the lookout I mentioned earlier where you can see the mountains and down the valley, a beautiful spot and then we took the long way home. Nice cool evening and good way to walk off the dinner. BTW - SAM makes a very good pot of coffee.(As long as he doesn't use Darksheare's recipe) He even let me drink out of his Wolf coffee cup once.

I don't envy you the sinus headache, my wife gets those and they're killers. Car trouble on top of that! It has to be a Monday.

Snippy's Vacation continued;

Sunday July 13

Early this morning we went to the Oregon City elevator. It is an elevator that goes up the side of the hill near SAM's. There isn't a flat place in Oregon, at least not any I saw so anywhere you go involves climbing to some extent in the opinion of this flatlander. lol. I could have used an elevator in places on the Mount Hood loop SAM took me on. LOL. Nah, it wouldn't have been near as much fun.

We continued our day just taking in the local sights, we ate breakfast at a local restaurant and drove to Washington which meant crossing the Columbia river, it was a beautiful drive. We listened to lots of good cd's and SAM sang along on the drive. Another wonderful time and another lovely day in Oregon.

Back to the house to tend to the thread for a while and then on the spur of the moment SAM said, "Wanna go to the zoo?", "Sure", I said. So off we went.

This bird eventually climbed all the way up SAM's arm to his face, lol. I had pictures too but they are gone now

What a wonderful day this would turn out to be although unplanned. We strolled around the zoo and had a fun relaxing afternoon together and some moments I'll never forget. Then back home and more deck sitting, coffee drinking, taking walks, hanging out together and having fun.
