An altered picture of ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein hangs on the wall of the US Army's 1st Battalion 22nd Infantry Regiment headquarters in Tikrit, about 110 miles (180 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad, Iraq, Sunday Aug. 17, 2003. The picture was later removed. The man at left is unidentified. (AP Photo/Murad Sezer)

The Air Rescue Service was established in 1946 ... and has served the USAF proudly since its inception. Rescue's worth has been proven time and again--996 combat saves in Korea and 2,780 in Southeast Asia.... Since then, our rescue resources have slowly declined to the point that we have only limited capability.... We will continue to press forward on several fronts to ensure that the USAF has an effective rescue capability. Our goal is to again be able to say with confidence, "These things we do that others may live."

Once downed by enemy fire in North Vietnam, surviving US pilots were largely dependent on brave Skyraider, FAC and HH-53 Super Jolly helicopter crews to save them. On this occasion the crewman on the ground has just broken cover and is about to be winched to safety by the Super Jolly helicopter crew under the protective over of the Douglas A-1 Skyraiders.

Hi SAM, I just have a quick minute to peek in on the Foxhole.
Thanks for all the great pictures and graphics. I can't wait to get home (1 hour to go) and read all the posts without having to hurry through them!
See you soon.

We used to practice Search and Rescue in the Los Padres National Forest up in the mountains. It would be 65 degrees down at sea level and 23 in the mountains. I about froze several times, flying with the doors open. The pilots at least had heat.

Whenever we made a remote landing, my job was to hang out the door and watch the tail rotor to make sure it didn't hit anything. You lose the tail rotor and you'll suddenly feel like a frog in a blender.
Reasoner was right. A helicopter violates every law of aerodynamics and most of the laws of physics. They can fly backwards, too, but not far.

So you were a "Rear Rotor Watcher"?
Sounds like a song title in there somewhere? ;-)

One day, a blonde went to go get lessons on how to fly a plane. The guy at the airport said there were no more plane flying lessons this year but she could take helicopter lessons. The blonde agreed and the man taught her and said, "I'll radio you every 1000 feet you go in the air." The blonde agreed.
He jumped in and took off. At 1000 feet, she radioed him and asked how she was doing. He said she was doing great. At 2000 feet, she radioed him and asked how she was doing. He said she was doing great. But right before she got to 3000 feet, the propeller stopped and she started twirling to the ground. When she landed, he went over to pull her out of the helicopter. He asked her what went wrong because she was doing perfect before. The blonde said, "At 2500 feet, I started to get cold so I turned the big fan off."
