The ex-con father of a little girl who was beaten and stabbed to death with her best friend on Mother's Day is under arrest and will be charged with first-degree murder.
Jerry Hobbs (search), who has an extensive criminal history and was released from a Texas jail just last month, stabbed his daughter, 8-year-old Laura Hobbs (search), and her 9-year-old schoolmate, Krystal Tobias (search), repeatedly in the neck, Illinois state attorney Mike Waller said Tuesday.
The girls' bodies were found Monday morning in a park where they had been riding their bicycles.
"We are filing two counts of first-degree murder against Jerry Branton Hobbs III of Zion," Waller said at a late-afternoon press conference.
Hobbs was due in court for a bond hearing Wednesday morning. If convicted, he would be eligible for the death penalty.
The girls were reported missing Sunday night, having failed to return from a sunny Mother's Day spent outdoors.
"It was a beautiful day on Sunday; it was Mother's Day. They were riding their bikes and visiting friends. At one point they ended up at the park where they encountered the defendant, and that's where the murders occurred," Waller said.

No mention so far of the mother. What kind of mother lets a three time loser who is violent, has a history of drug use, etc. with his record come back into the house? I am constantly amazed at womens stupidity.

Sick isnt a strong enough word. This guy has to be mentally insane. Insanity should not be a defense for murderers like this, I dont care if he is crazy as a loon he needs to be executed.
Prayers for the living who are left with the ghastly pain of these murders.

Fry the lawyers who defended him, the judge who gave him a less-than-maximum sentance, and the parole board who freed him.

This whole family is nuts. And the sad truth is that little Laura would probably have grown up to be just like them.
The most tragic thing about this story IMO, is the other little girl. I don't see how this killer could have physically controlled two girls at the same time, and I strongly suspect that Krystal died because she tried to help her friend instead of running away to save herself.
This guy doesn't sound like he'd provide much of a meal ticket. More likely to spend the welfare check on meth.
One of the saddest cases of that was a jury trial that my sister was on the jury for. Mom's live-in had molested her daughter, he admitted it and was convicted, served his jail time and when he got out - you guessed it, the little girl's mother took him back in.
I think that we should take him for a drag around the block then salt him.....
Tragic outcome. He still has to stand trial - but I do think it likely that he is guilty.

Actual evidence or convenient suspect?
Yes. I'd like to see the death penalty administered in the same manner in which the victim(s) died. Now that's a deterent.
This monster was arrested after an argument with his wife, after which he chased neighbors around with a CHAIN SAW - he was only stopped when someone konked him out with a shovel! (And then he's out again to do more violence!) What a wonderful world.....

There's his defense...he's brain damaged from being hit in the head with a shovel. He can't possibly be held responsible /sarcsasm
I got something a whole lot more permanent than a shovel, although a shovel would be needed to bury this piece of crap. Hell is to good for him and others like him.
I think it takes guts to go up against a guy with a chain saw armed only with a shovel.
Such is our court system. This news of past deeds of Dobbs gleaned from Newsradio 780 am in Chicago yesterday afternoon while I drove home from work.
Kind of like Mike Schiavo.
When I first saw his photo on FNC, that was the first thought that popped into my head. Mean, and evil.
I wonder if the girls happened upon HIM in the park doing something he didn't want seen?
Watched the news and was kind of saddened by the whole neighborhood. It seemed a lot of the people they interviewed were the kind of people you'd never want as neighbors.
The mother actually did try to leave him several times. He wouldnt stay away from them. I think she actually felt at times that they were safer just trying to keep him happy.He had never touched the kids as far as i know in the past. He was an alchohlic and druggie though and did live off of welfare and she worked not him and he would take her checks. (I used to know this family they were regulars at my convience store) He is not even a man and should be killed in a gas chamber, JMO. I pray for the mother who is probably filled with horrible guilt.
