You either missed her point, or don't know anything about Marilyn Manson.
How about the LSD inspired ties. Are those ok?
Sure.... unless they whisper at you.
If LSD inspired music is OK, why would the ties matter? *grin*
FYI - I like some of Grateful Dead's music, but I'm more of a Pink Floyd fan.
these are "yell" ties.
***If a Christian claimed to enjoy Marilyn Manson, I'd probably question theirs.***
I am glad you brought that up. P.O.D. seems to have no problem with him...

... and it is thing like this that are causing some Christians to sound the alarm regarding who is exactly is entertaining our children and what they are being led into.
***Christians can think for themselves and decide if a song fits their tastes and their value system.***
That, my friend, is what is referred to as moral anarchy. The key verse for the book of Judges is:
"In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes." And the entire book is a striking example of the confusion a society can come to when people just do that which was right in his own eyes.
"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
but a wise man listens to advice."
Proverbs 12
***If a Christian claimed to enjoy Marilyn Manson, I'd probably question theirs.***
So you are agreeing that there are some types of music that are inappropriate for Christians to listen to.
What? Oh....nevermind...
We bought a dozen tickets to their concert here and took our kids and some of their friends. We told them they were going to learn about really good rock and roll.
They loved it. We loved it. It was not church. There were people there doing things that we didn't and won't do. But it was a great concert none the less.
***I question yours for being so adamant that we judge the souls of Christian musicians based on their entire home record collections.***
Could you point me to the post where I say that?
Would it bring me joy to do that?
***While I appreciate your citing me I might point out that your counselor friend is not seeing the ones who are doing well, he is seeing the ones who are a mess!***
Both. He hung out in the scene and had a lot of acquaintances and did counseling.
***But lets get to the real crux of the matter. Listening to secular music is not satanic, nor is going to some place other than church!***
That's really not what I am arguing - though for some reason people are trying to pigeonhole me into that position. But it is true that when you listen to music or read a book, whether you like it or not you are assuming some of the ideas, opinions, moral, values etc. of that media. If all you read and all you listen to is worldly material then you will begin to think like the world. Basic psychological principle - Conditioning 101.
Paul tells us to let our minds be renewed...
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind" and that happens primarily by being exposed to revealed truth, whether through the Word, music or teaching. Revealed truth is what will reorient our minds so that our thinking is more inline with His will.
The minds of lost people are basically alienated from God...
"This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:"
"And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds"
So when a person spends a fair amount of time listening to secular music they are letting themselves get comfortable with a mindset that empty, darkened and alienated from God. I use to be in the music business. Music was my 24 hour-a-day life. Now I can't stand to listen to it because to me it has the stench of death about it. The stench of alienation from God.
***That whole issue is just to ramp up control over somebody elses will.***
Very cynical. Standing up and saying, "Hey, this seems wrong" is not about control. It's about conscience.
***And by the way, Grammy is a girl!***
Ouch! Sorry.
:0)
***Would it bring me joy to do that?***
I hope not! (but with 400 posts it would be a hard job).
***There's a few Grateful Dead songs that I like. Does that make me a heathen? ***
Mr. Marlowe,
I've seen you argue. You can do better that this!
***None taken.***
... and no answer given?
BTW, congradulation on your marriage.
I didn't think it sounded fun.
In my editorial comment above, I was not quoting you... I was paraphrasing the point I thought you have been arguing with me.... with obviously biased language made to make me seem more right than you. :~D OK?
Thank you!
OK.
So, to your point...
***I question yours for being so adamant that we judge the souls of Christian musicians based on their entire home record collections.***
I am not advocating judging souls. I am saying that it is inappropriate for a Christian artist to publically promote, praise or support a secular, godless band or immoral music.
Just as it would be inappropriate for a preacher to stand and read to his congregation from some godless, immoral novelist for the purposes of entertainment - so it is with Christian musicians.
Now the preacher may read for the purposes of reproving the author's writings - but not to support them. And I wish we would see Christian artist quoting from secular music and saying, "Hey, this is garbage - don't believe these lies". But they won't because many of them want to fit in with these secular artists.
Pauls says,
"Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret."
I see where you've messed up. You've made the job of Preacher and the job of Christian Musician the same. How insulting to preachers. They go to school a long time to do what they do. Musicians just had to have a garage, understanding parents, and some buddies.
