Apparently hoping to outdo Hillary Clinton's improbable attempt to reinvent herself as a duck hunter, John Kerry has tried to avoid alienating supporters of gun rights by depicting himself as a deer hunter. Mark Steyn will have none of it.
Steyn wrote in the London Telegraph yesterday: "He was in Wisconsin the other day, pretending to be a regular guy, and was asked what kind of hunting he preferred. 'I'd have to say deer,' said the senator. 'I go out with my trusty 12-gauge double-barrel, crawl around on my stomach ... That's hunting.'
"This caused huge hilarity among my New Hampshire neighbours. None of us has ever heard of anybody deer hunting by crawling around on his stomach, even in Massachusetts. The trick is to blend in with the woods and, given that John Kerry already looks like a forlorn tree in late fall, it's hard to see why he'd give up his natural advantage in order to hunt horizontally.

You could use a sabot slug I believe, but I defer to FReepers who are hunters.
There are areas of the east coast you have to use shotgun with deer slugs. It is illegal to be in the field with any rifle larger than .30 cal
Shotguns are the only modern firearms allowed for deer hunting in much of Maryland.
Not at all. In Pennsylvania, you can't deer hunt with a rifle south of I-80 - you have to use a shotgun with slugs or buckshot.
What was absurd is that Kerry said that he crawled on his belly to hunt deer.
Most use slugs. But some use buckshot. Hmmm... Where do you think it got that name?
In some states this as the preferred method....when hunting in a smaller acreage plot of land. Hence, the term "deer slug".
goodness gracious. is this really happening? the democratic party thing. it's almost to the point you feel something akin to pity. almost.
Not that remarkable. In the southern parts of wisconsin, gun deer season is shotgun only. Nothern parts have the choice of rifle or shotgun.
The crawling around on his stomach is the ridiculous part. Either you walk around yourself or as part of a drive, or you're up in a stand waiting all day.
Since no one on this forum thinks I should be hunting deer with them.
Guess it can't be done.
Guess I will have to back to using only handguns again.
I defer to you East Coasters on this. Out here in the West, hunting deer with a shotgun accomplishes one thing. It leaves you with a big ole' mess.
I'll take my rifle anyday, get a clean kill, and not have to see Bambi suffer.
Why? what is the difference?
just want to know.
I hunt deer with a shotgun - rifles are not permitted for deer hunting where I live, I don't like my CVA muzzleloader & I haven't scraped together enough for a Thompson Contender.
The point isn't that he claimed to hunt with a shotgun, but rather (1) that he claimed to use a double-barrel shotgun (which in over&under configuration is almost exclusively for birds and in side-by configuration is suitable only for deer hunting with buckshot since they don't handle slugs accurately); and (2) that he claimed to hunt deer crawling on his belly, which, while appropriate for topping crests, isn't a technique designed to get you close enough to a deer to dispatch it with buckshot.
My father and I used a variety of firearms to hunt deer, ranging from Rifles to Shotguns....(12 gauge Browning Semi-auto with slugs).
I know alot of people who use shotguns to hunt deer.
In some states, it is the only way you can hunt deer...ie. Ohio I believe. They use slugs.
When did Hillary claim to be a duck hunter? I must have missed that one.
No, not if you expect to get scratches and put in for a purple heart.....
Apparently hunting means a completely different thing out in the East.
Meh, I thought it was another example of pandering, and no one else said you can't hunt with your deer slugs there ace.
Rifles have a much, much farther range, and a missed shot could do some unintended damage.
Some states require shotguns but crawling on your belly is stupid in all 50 states.

Would this be like stomping chickens to death slowly?
You got it wrong! He meant dear, not deer. I'll bet he crwals on his belly for Ms. Heinz, on a daily basis.
Actually it's not remarkable at all. I used a 12 double to hunt deer in NH when I was a youngster. Been doing it ever since.
Shotguns are very effective. Best defense gun and right up there as a hunting gun.
A double is very effective for hunting. One barrel loaded for small game, one barrel with 00 buck in case you get a deer shot.
But not a double barrel crawling on your belly. Where shotguns are required most people you pump or auto and concealment.

"(2) that he claimed to hunt deer crawling on his belly, which, while appropriate for topping crests, isn't a technique designed to get you close enough to a deer to dispatch it with buckshot."
Actually he meant that he was crawling on his belly while mouse hunting. That is the preferred method for all snakes!
You have it wrong! Kerry meant dear, not deer. I'll bet he crawls on his belly for Ms. Heinz, daily.
Not so much that he claims to use a shotgun, but that he claims to use a double barrel as opposed to a pump.

I know folks in NY state who do. They fire 12 gauge slug rounds. Their 30'06 rifles are on they wall except when they hunt in Colorado or Utah. Go to Remington or Winchester sites and look up 'slugs'.
While shotguns(with slugs) are used for deer, almost nobody uses double barrels. That's more of a bird gun.
Well, when I go deer hunting, I just run my boat up to the bank of the river and shoot the deer in the back with my rifle.
It's common practice in southern Michigan to hunt deer with a 12 gauge...you use a slug instead of shot. It's illegal to use a rifle south of a certain point.
Hey, that's an improvement over the FIRST edition of this story, where he hunted deer from a boat.
Crawling around on your belly here in Washington State in the pouring down rain in October would be just about the stupidest thing I could think of. Not a good way to hunt, regardless of the weather, unless he is sneaking up on a petting zoo. And a double barrel shotgun? Yes, a few do use them according to hunting magazines I've read, but I don't remember running into someone who did.
They do look good in photo-ops though. I can picture Kerry standing over a whitetail buck in his soiless Neiman Marcus hunting outfit. The buck his butler shot the night before using a .22 and a spotlight.
What is remarkable about that. I have my fathers browning-patent remington that put the limit in the freezer every year for decades.
"Even more remarkable is that Kerry hunts deer with a shotgun."
For those of us in southern Michigan, that's the only part that makes any sense.
I remember crawling on my belly one day when a 'hunter' decided my turkey call was a little too realistic.
Pretty funny. I agree. Not too many folks here understand much about firearms. To further your point, sharpen your spear or roll out the catapult, lock and load with number -000 rocks. Make sure you'v got the elevation right first, since the trajectory is not all that good.
western NY is shotgun only - I use a rem1100 12 ga 2 3/4" rifled slugs
The only odd thing would be seeing a side by side or O/U used in this manner -
........and then the crawling thing is all wrong - unless its boiler maker night / chili night or the last night of hunting (after last call)
Shotguns only in Iowa, Carl.
I find the trebuchet more sporting.

What is the logic of disallowing some rifles, but allowing a slug? Aren't slugs just as deadly or moreso than rifle rounds? I've been told that the sabot slugs will go through an engine block.
